What are you watching in 2023?
« on: March 29, 2022, 11:09:25 PM »
New season of Atlanta has been interesting and developmental.

Nightmare Alley was a fun watch. Wish they would’ve went younger with the Bradley Cooper role.

The Last Duel, very underrated. One of the better movies post-pandemic.

Atlanta is great. Brilliant show. Glad its finally back.

Saw the Outfit recently. Really strong movie.

Not watching a ton of tv currently. But A LOT is coming soon. Most of it being big time shows that have been gone a while.

Ozark finale, Better Call Saul, Stranger Things, The boys. Barry.  All will be back very soon soon.

Really looking forward to We Own This City too. David Simon miniseries.

Love all those shows. Seems like forever for Better Call Saul. Season 5 was so, so strong - one of the best seasons for any series in a while. Do we know when it's coming back?

Pretty sure I've already mentioned it, but Station Eleven on HBO Max is really good.

The Last Duel, very underrated. One of the better movies post-pandemic.

I've been in the minority on these two among people I've discussed them with, but I wasn't a fan of either.
Both are beautifully filmed, but the storylines were plodding and at times simply dull, and the acting was, er, excessive. In Nightmare Alley in particularly, I found myself more than an hour in wondering what this movie was about.
Anyhow, I know people who love both, so I'm sure my take is an outlier.

This may be better said in the F1 thread, but season 4 of "Drive to Survive" was fantastic.

Leo was the original choice until he dropped out. So Del Toro definitely always intended to go older with the role.

I don't disagree, at least about The Last Duel.  Maybe I was expecting too much, but Ridley Scott, a HUGE cast, an intriguing story...and it was just kind of dull.  I agree.  I thought it tried a bit too hard to be dramatic.

As for current shows...

Halfway through Mrs. Maisel Season 4 and IMO, its been by far the weakest season.  Some hilarious moments to be sure and Tony Shahloub is on FIRE, but its just been kind of bizarre and dragging at points.  My wife and I BLEW through the previous 3 seasons and we're not in any hurry with this one.

2 episodes into the newest season of Killing Eve.  Love the bizarre quirkiness of the show.  Been kind of WTF in these episodes, but the show has earned so much leash.  Jodie Comer is just fantastic, which is necessary cause I can't stand Sandra Oh in general.

Blew through Bridgerton Season 2.  Such a love hate show.  Its so ridiculous, so inconsistent at times, but its beautifully shot, the soundtrack is brilliant, and its just easy and fun when its on.  I will give them complete credit for completely and utterly pivoting away from the core character/plots of Season 1 (obviously aside from the Lady Whistledown reveal) and doing so seamlessly.

Couple episodes into WeCrashed.  Entertaining.  Leto is such a good character actor and honestly nails all the absurdity of Adam Neumann that I had read about for years.

Winning Time has been a great watch so far. Long episodes but highly worth it.

I second this, Adam McKay is an executive producer so if you enjoyed The Big Short, Vice, or Don't Look Up you'll probably enjoy Winning Time. Be advised, very R-rated. But Magic Johnson is a main character so... that shouldn't come as a surprise.

All the actors are great but Jason Clark's role as Jerry West is hilarious.

I concur with others, Winning Time is a very enjoyable watch. It’s very well acted, it does take a lot of liberties with actual events/people, but I love it through 4 episodes.

We just watched the first episode tonight. Very engrossing. Looking forward to more.

I've only watched a couple of episodes so far and it's been pretty good IMHO. But it's kind of weird watching guys we as fans know very well from seeing them on TV for years being portrayed by actors who look nothing like them. It's also strange the way Jerry West is being portrayed.

Approach the show carefully.  It'll feel jumpy at first... because it is.  But it is so wonderfully acted.

Just finished last night.

It moves REALLY quickly, trying to wrap up all stories/conflicts/characters in 1 season/10 episodes. Could easily have been stretched over multiple seasons. Sometimes, it feels like it's "too perfect" an ending for each while other feels abruptly ended.

The ending is fine. It's pretty clear where the movie is gonna go.

People have paid for paramount+?

If they don't have my streaming fixed by today, I'm cancelling. I paid mainly for USMNT matches, but despite premium membership it won't allow me to stream Halo, Evil, or any other programs. Every time I ask their support why, they send me a list of "other devices" I can stream on, but on the list of "other devices" is the very TV that I'm trying to use.
