The late night run to Speed Queen, and the danger factor made the smoked meat all that much more coveted.

Jeff

You knew a Queen who coveted smoked meat??

Crash

A couple of the original photo's are still around as well as a mounted basketball my Mom made for opening night. Some great memories of a great bar.

Goose

Is the pic of Dean still around? That was the best of the best.

By the way, who mounted the basketball??

Some great memories of a great bar.

The Gym was a great bar. So was The Ardmore. But I think an A 10 pilot captured the essence of Marquette's most treasured watering hole...

Lenny's Tap...

It was a place where heartache wasn't a stranger and the sting of cheap booze somehow only eased but never cured life's agony.

A heady mixture of sweat, cigarette smoke, body odor, and the stale perfume of the tart in leopard skin spandex whose ass was wrapped around her bar stool and her cherry red lips around the head of a PBR bottle.

It was a place Al would have been proud to drink at and probably did.

Where dreams died and agony thrived through the gauzy fog of one last unfiltered Camel.

For a few dollars a man could find sanctuary in a guileless world of doom and despair framed in flashing neon. Of all the gin joints in Milwaukee this was the oasis, the shimmering chimera of shame in city that gives no quarter...

Richie and Paul Frenn bought the bar from my brother in law and sister. They were the Marquette Liquor guys and also had the store at Pic N Save.

My Mom mounted the basketball for opening night and my six year old finger prints were on it as well.

Thanks for supporting The Gym Bar and allowing me to drink for free for a decade, much appreciated.

Hell, we practically drank for free there a couple nights a week. Dollar pitchers for sure on Thursdays; and I think quarter taps on Tuesdays?

I get confused as I try to recall this stuff because almost every night there was a deal somewhere on or near campus.

Yes!  Honestly I always wondered the meaning behind the pic n save shop.

We occasionally went to the Howard Johnson's downtown on Friday for all-you-can-eat fried clams for around $5.

I remember that deal. Truth in Advertising should have called that meal, "Fried Batter with a hint of Clam"

The fish fry at Turner's was the tits. We would have 8 guys take up a table and cram down double digit servings. I like to think we played a role in Turner's changing their policy from AYCE to "One more platter."

Had our Rehearsal Dinner there and heard Fr Corbett Walsh give Turner's the Jesuit Seal of Approval. Sad to hear it went the way of so many other landmarks.

Are you sure it was a White Castle?? There was a White Tower near the Grand Avenue Mall / Boston Store / Marc Plaza. It was a clear rip-off of White Castle.

Frankly, the incredible environmental damage wrought by beef cattle sh1tting all over the place has me off animal protein until further notice. I will no longer be party to such senseless carnage.

I'd forgotten about Angelo's - I think that's where we'd go sometimes after drinking and I'd buy raw cookie dough :)

Ziggy's went into the old Wales on Wells location for awhile I believe - no idea how long they stayed in business.

That was the ill fated Zig-o-Rama, with the drunk window. It was already closed when I started in 94. Louie D's went in there winter of 1995. Louie was Ziggy's old business partner.

Also opening in 1994 was Stone Creek Coffee and Big Apple Bagels. Those were both gone by 2000. There was also a bad Mexican place on Wells next to Real Chili. I went once in my 7 semesters at MU, during Orientation. Freshman year late night hang after parties was Michael's for the $1.99 Marquette Special.

Anyone remember that bad BBQ place that went into Campus Town, J Price's, I think. That was there maybe 9 months.

I don't mind tofu in the Japanese way. It's the bastardization of it by privileged white folk that puts me off. I believe this is called "Cultural Appropriation."

What in the name of Rachel Dolezal makes white people think that perfectly good tofu needs to mimic turkey? It's that same arrogance that starts with Trudeau in black face and ends up with American citizens in Manzanar.

As for beef, I must have been light headed from all the CH4 in the atmosphere. Count me in for a ribeye at the next Meat Summit.

Angelo's pepperoni was so good.
