I worked at Wales on Wells during my time at MU and did some catering work over the summer for the owner of the place.  Wow that was awhile ago :)

The Waleses lived across the street from us ~10 years ago.  I think they moved to Texas or around there.

Wales on Wells did a good burger. Not great but good.

In the context of Combat Zone Wells Street it was a welcome oasis in a world limited to Real Chili, Wales, Sy's (lunch only), Cousin's, and Angelos. Pretty pathetic, actually.

I'd forgotten about Angelo's - I think that's where we'd go sometimes after drinking and I'd buy raw cookie dough :).

Ziggy's went into the old Wales on Wells location for awhile I believe - no idea how long they stayed in business.

Ziggy's moved to 16th and Wisconsin, next to Walgreens, at least by the mid 90s.

Louie D's was in the old Wales location, I think.

I still miss Angelo's pizza and motz sticks.

Real Chili used to be next door to the Lanche which was the perfect location. A man could spend hours filling his belly with $0.20 Red White and Blues then slither next door for a couple bowls of gut cleansing goodness.

A guy named Gene had Real Chili evicted and opened Chili Gene's in it's place. He even kept the Real Chili decor. The Marquette faithful avoided that place like the plague. I think Chili Gene's lasted a semester before fading to black.

Dennis had a bunch of t shirts made up that read, "I survived the Chili War." I had one that I foolishly used for running and doing PT. Hindsight being 20/20 I should have preserved it as a combat memento.

I'm absolutely old enough to remember Chili on 15th. I have very vague recollection of Chili on WI Ave. My dad would take me for lunch before MU games probably as early as about 1968 or 69.

On a less nostalgic bend, Sobelman's owns the Angelo pizza name and receipe. They should seriously consider the Dawg House location for a grand reopening. No chains please. The old mom and pops were the best. They all knew which way to point us home.

Did the Dog Haus grow into a pretty popular spot? It opened while I was at MU, but Marquette Gyros was still around so there really wasn't a role for the Dog Haus. I think I went there maybe once or twice. I guess I wouldn't be surprised if it became more popular after Gyros closed.

I was 09-14 and dog haus was arguably just as popular as MU gyros. Also I still haven't gotten over losing MU gyros. Those fried pickles were a notch above any other

I can second this, DH was a ghost town the first couple of years it was there, I thought there was no way it would survive.

Outstanding find, Dr.

I didn't realize they expanded to so many sites, including one in Madison. I pray to God they had the Marquette Special on the menu there.

Personally, I never once had the noodles. That makes no sense to me.

I was also curious what was the link between Green Bay and Chili. Must be the noodles because I wouldn't equate Green Bay with SW cuisine.

Is Cousin's still there? There were many nights at McCormick where we would enter the cafeteria and simply say, "Cousins." Goddam SAGA did more for the Cousins franchise than any amount of advertising. The cheesesteak wasn't bad.

Hopefully it's replaced with a small business or local chain. Wells has lost all of its personality, even when you compare it to where it was 10 years ago.

That's actually surprising you hadn't heard of it going back. I mean it'd be packed when I was going there. More so that Jimmy johns, qdoba, open pantry, and real chili. And arguably on the same or moreso than Gyros.

Also can we talk about the lack of quality late night drunk food on campus in general? The fact that I just named two average chains, a place that's closed, and a convenience store is troubling. I think there's a Burger King on Wells now also which isn't helping

Ham & Egger during the 80's was on the NE corner of 12th & Wells according to a pic I came across so your memory is pretty close.  The comment is that it was replaced by Rocky Rococo before the building was eventually demolished.  That's now an empty grass field.  Chick seems to remember it being further east, possibly across I-43 maybe in a prior incarnation.

What I find so interesting personally is my own inability to visualize campus (and surrounds) back in the day because I've spent so much time on the totally transformed campus in the last 20 years.  I mean, I remember all these places but would be hard pressed to tell you the Wells cross street they were on.

Yes there was a Cousin's Subs in that area. Not sure when it started or ended. I know a now retired MU Professor that liked to go there once in a while in the 90's. Not sure when it closed or moved. I want to say it was on the North side of Wells towards the East end of Campus somewhere. (i don't believe it was on Wisconsin Ave) It was definitely a Cousin's Subs, and it was walking distance from Marquette.

I remember some other Cousin's Subs locations but none were near Marquette. There was (or is) one on Farwell amd Brady, one near Kopp's in Glendale, on Port Washington Road and Oakland and Locust near UWM. I'm sure many are still around.

No actually that was the Rocky's.  You are right.

The Cousins was on the north side of Wells perhaps where the parking ramp is now?  It wasn't across 43.  That would have been too long a walk for a sub back in the day.

I know what you mean about the campus of my era fading away.  I have been there enough since then that I have trouble picturing where things were.

Suburpia

There was a Suburpia on the same block as the Lanche. Weird sandwiches as they doused them in oil and vinegar.

We were there once when someone rode their Harley inside the shop a la D Day. Funnily enough, it didn't seem odd in the moment.

Wells Street once had character. Now...not so much. I prefer the gritty seamy underbelly of despair and desolation over the gentrified blandness that is now Wells. It personifies the Al vs Wojo dichotomy rather well.

You looking for investors so's you can open Wales II, glow?

Used to love their little tomato and pickle bar so one could dress up one's burgers. Had many a burger there when the McCormick dinner offerings were especially putrid.

Favorite post-sloshing eats:

Freshman year - Real Chili (mix it up good, boys)

Sophomore year - Angelo's (loved the "Torpedo Steak Sandwich")

Junior year - George Webb on 27th and Wells (we lived on 24th and Wells and frequented Harp & Shamrock and Midget Bar)

Senior year - Ham & Egger on 12th and Wells (usually got the "steak" and eggs; I'm sure it was a prime cut)

Went other places too, of course, but those were the staples. Amazing we survived ... especially Webb!

I believe it was across the street from RC and The Gym. It had a coffee house type feel to it with a stage and some open mic type music. There was a 2nd one across from Schroeder on the SE corner of Wells that MU bought and tore  down to expand Shyt Field, iirc.

You are correct, sir. The Suburpia was west on Wells from JV Grunts (a place I never once set foot in.)

Suburpia did have an open mic stage now that you mention it. In fact, the Bob Dylan of Palatine was on stage singing when the guy rode his Harley in one night.

I remember going in there once during daylight hours for lunch. What I saw in the cold harsh unforgiving sunlight was stomach turning. Without the mask of darkness and the fog of alcohol the inside of Suburpia was The Jungle meets Dante's Inferno. I think even Upton Sinclair would have been revolted.

White Castle was on History Channel's Food that Made America this past week.

One of the reasons that the stores are all white, and the very name itself, is that the founders wanted a spotless place to eat.  Those days are long gone, based on my Whitey's experiences.   :o :o :o

I lived in apartments at 16th & Wisconsin one year and my Dad asked me if there were pool tables in the lobby - that was the Gym bar :).  A friend and I used to go there and have dinner once a week or so and play darts - they had good burgers and fries that weren't too expensive.  We took our parents there for lunch on graduation day between the grad ceremonies and I remember we were each trying to teach our Moms how to play cricket :).

And I realized I got Guiliano's and Angelo's mixed up in my head.  I believe Angelo's was where Sobelman's is now.

Yes Angelos was where Sobelmans is now.

And the Gym wasn't at 16th and Wisconsin.  It was on Wells closer to 17th.  Back in the day, the Gym was the Ardmore.  Famous for their import nights and Moosehead on tap.

It was on Wells at one point but it also was at 16th and Wisconsin - I know that much as I literally lived above it for a year in the Ardmore apartments.  It was in the old Ardmore bar for a bit - from the scoop wiki actually (Caffrey's Pub is there now):

The Gym Bar opened in 19?? at 1613 West Wells St, the current location of Murphy's Irish Pub. In 1993, it moved to first floor of the Ardmore building at 717 North 16th St, which used to house the Ardmore Bar. Finally, in 1998 the Gym Bar closed for good.

The Gym had some phenomenal photos on the wall - Marquette greats in racing stripes and Bumble Bees. My fave was the one of The Dream holding the NIT trophy on his head (Back when the NIT was a real tournament and Al gave the NCAA the finger.)

Goose's family owned The Gym. Hopefully those photos are still around.

We occasionally went to the Howard Johnson's downtown on Friday for all-you-can-eat fried clams for around $5.

Two of my friends ate extremely fast - still do, actually - and they used to order their second helping as soon as the first was delivered. One used to tell the server: "I hope you have your track shoes on." We'd never get fewer than 3 servings, and sometimes more. Maybe that's why HoJo's got out of the restaurant business.

Yes Angelos was where Sobelmans is now.

Freshmen and sophomores across Marquette wailed and gnashed their teeth and tore their clothes when Angelos closed.  When my friends were at Marquette in the mid to late 00s, it was the absolute easiest place to procure libations when not of legal age.  Pretty sure you could have a piece of paper with your name and a stick figure and “I Am 21” written on it and it would pass

It was this way when I was in school as well.  They'd have a 'bouncer' at the door... which was just a kid who let in who he wanted.

Keefe,

We celebrated 50 years of MU basketball with a Tip Off parade down Wisconsin Ave. The photo was taken in December '66. To the left of the float you can see Real Chilli.

I was early in the 21 year old drinking age days.  The only places that you couldn't get in back then were the Lanche and O'Donahues.  You could get into the Gym and the Ardmore if you showed up in the afternoon and stayed through the evening OR if you showed up late for a night cap.  Everyone else really didn't check much.

Some great memories of a great bar.

The Gym was a great bar. So was The Ardmore. But I think an A 10 pilot captured the essence of Marquette's most treasured watering hole...

Lenny's Tap...

It was a place where heartache wasn't a stranger and the sting of cheap booze somehow only eased but never cured life's agony.

A heady mixture of sweat, cigarette smoke, body odor, and the stale perfume of the tart in leopard skin spandex whose ass was wrapped around her bar stool and her cherry red lips around the head of a PBR bottle.

It was a place Al would have been proud to drink at and probably did.

Where dreams died and agony thrived through the gauzy fog of one last unfiltered Camel.

For a few dollars a man could find sanctuary in a guileless world of doom and despair framed in flashing neon. Of all the gin joints in Milwaukee this was the oasis, the shimmering chimera of shame in city that gives no quarter...

Hell, we practically drank for free there a couple nights a week. Dollar pitchers for sure on Thursdays; and I think quarter taps on Tuesdays?

I get confused as I try to recall this stuff because almost every night there was a deal somewhere on or near campus.

I remember that deal. Truth in Advertising should have called that meal, "Fried Batter with a hint of Clam"

The fish fry at Turner's was the tits. We would have 8 guys take up a table and cram down double digit servings. I like to think we played a role in Turner's changing their policy from AYCE to "One more platter."

Had our Rehearsal Dinner there and heard Fr Corbett Walsh give Turner's the Jesuit Seal of Approval. Sad to hear it went the way of so many other landmarks.

I'd forgotten about Angelo's - I think that's where we'd go sometimes after drinking and I'd buy raw cookie dough :).

Ziggy's went into the old Wales on Wells location for awhile I believe - no idea how long they stayed in business.

That was the ill fated Zig-o-Rama, with the drunk window. It was already closed when I started in 94. Louie D’s went in there winter of 1995. Louie was Ziggy’s old business partner.

Also opening in 1994 was Stone Creek Coffee and Big Apple Bagels. Those were both gone by 2000. There was also a bad Mexican place on Wells next to Real Chili. I went once in my 7 semesters at MU, during Orientation. Freshman year late night hang after parties was Michael’s for the $1.99 Marquette Special.

Anyone remember that bad BBQ place that went into Campus Town, J Price’s, I think. That was there maybe 9 months.

I don't mind tofu in the Japanese way. It's the bastardization of it by privileged white folk that puts me off. I believe this is called "Cultural Appropriation."

What in the name of Rachel Dolezal makes white people think that perfectly good tofu needs to mimic turkey? It's that same arrogance that starts with Trudeau in black face and ends up with American citizens in Manzanar.

As for beef, I must have been light headed from all the CH4 in the atmosphere. Count me in for a ribeye at the next Meat Summit.

By a mile.  My buddy used to work for Beam, and doing competitive research for some products he told me that Korbel (the largest manufacturer of domestically) sold like 60-65% of their total annual production in Wisconsin alone.

Beam also owned a crappy blended whiskey called Kesslers that was a bit sweet with some spice.  He said their marketing and distribution had an oversized focus on Wisconsin for that product as well, cause it had some brandy similarities.

Ziggy's moved to 16th and Wisconsin, next to Walgreens, at least by the mid 90s.

Louie D's was in the old Wales location, I think.

I still miss Angelo's pizza and motz sticks.

KIN!  This is an incredibly embarrassing post for you, our supposed Ziggy Historian.

Ziggies - Where The Leaders of Tomorrow, Eat Today was always at 16th & Wisconsin

Then Wales on Wells closed in 1993 and Ziggie decided it was time to strike, his empire would grow.  He opened Ziggo-Mania.  It had, among other things, a drunk window, a disco ball and a TV (one of those 35 inch trucks that your thought was a big screen).  He had an amazing quote in the Trib about no drunks allowed, hence the "Drunk Window".  And he expected sober kids to come in, order his sh!tty food and DANCE under the disco ball.

SPOILER Alert: it failed.  Soon Louie D's opened.  And Ziggy was left with just his 16th & Wisconsin locale.
