Welcome to MU, Samir! Great to see another long, athletic guard join the program.

Awesome! Day 1.

2020?  Dude looks like he's 24.  In any event, I really don't care how old he is, but he looks like a leader with some great floor sense.  He looks ready right now

He's 17.

He's 17.

Then let's hope to god he doesn't reclassify to 2019.  I don't think I can take another year of the TV guys saying, "He's so good, and he's only 17!"

Well... he would be 18 next season so... not a problem!

Great commitment.  It will be interesting to see how the MU offense changes after Markus leaves and the new guards take over.
The value of value is valueless.

Wojo keeps on getting after it on the recruiting trail. It's refreshing to have these great recruiters at Marquette

Welcome aboard Symir!!! Thanks for choosing Marquette you won't be let down!

This looks like a really good commit. Very excited to see this news yesterday.

I get the idea that we want him to reclassify to 2019 and get here asap.

But next year we have a logjam in the backcourt .. Markus, Scar, Elliott, McEwen and Akanno.

Doesn't it make more sense for him to come in 2020?

I agree with this, but for different reasons.  As successful as Markus was his Freshman year, I think he was the exception more than the rule.  I was watching the I4 Mich game over the weekend, and they were talking about Michigan's good Freshman, and how he could have joined the team last year, but felt that he wasn't ready, so he spent another year prep before arriving on campus.  Couldn't Dexter technically already be here (if we had a spot) but got a chance to go prep?  It's the same thought process behind any non medical redshirt.   I would gladly trade the production that a 17 year old Freshman gives us, vs what a 22 year old Senior can.
Scoop motto:

Dexter Akanno was going to prep school because he had just one D-1 scholarship from a low level school.  He was hoping extra time & exposure would lead to more offers.  It worked.

Symir Torrence can weigh the pros and cons.  2019, be part of a good team, get acclimated to the system, start heading to his goal of making the NBA a year earlier.  2020, easier road to immediate playing time as a frosh and the chance to enjoy another year playing at Vermont Academy.

Whatever Symir decides, I'm fine with it.  Very excited about seeing him play for MU!

TAMU, Knower of Ball

In a perfect world I would have Symir reclassify and redshirt his freshman year. I think unless you have an odd situation like Joey's, that is a pretty tough sell. Given that,  I'd rather have him come in 2020.

It's pretty much a guarantee that 23 year old Torrence will be better than 18 year old Torrence. Why trade a year of 23 year old Torrence for a year of 18 year old Torrence? Especially when the team that 18 year old Torrence will be joining looks pretty deep at his position?

Otoh, he has already done a transfer to Vermont Academy to further his basketball situation.  I could see him reclassifying.  As for redshirting, maybe not.

I'd venture to guess not too many kids who (justifiably) see themselves as high level athletes want to be playing for free in college when they're 23 years old.
