Leelanau peninsula.

Yeah, awesome place. Grew up there in the summers. Was thinking about going back, haven't been in 4-5 years now. Trying to figure out if I want to do nostalgia or be adventurous. Never been as an adult without kids, so there's that angle now.

Looking for a long weekend with the wife, probably June-ish. Preferably within 6 hours of Kenosha.

House rental preferred, but not necessary. Stuff to do is a positive, winery, breweries, light hiking. Possibly golf, but might be frowned upon playing a solo round.

What ya got?

1) Sister Chick is right about Galena. But I'd add that Dubuque, 11 miles away, makes this especially appealing. Dubuque is finally embracing its architectural heritage. The restaurant scene has improved vastly. Still has a ways to go but an interesting city. Has gaming, which Galena lacks, in addition to water parks, boating and scenery. Full disclosure: Ms. Dgies is a Dubuque native and I've been going to both Galena and Dubuque since the 19..s (long time ago).

2) North Shore of Lake Superior in Minnesota -- Fits everything you want except, I suspect, wineries. This is the most beautiful scenery in the Midwest and it's relatively unknown outside Minnesota. The area looks like Maine's coast. Restaurant and dining scene has improved dramatically in recent years. Houses are everywhere. Also, don't ignore Duluth. In the summer, it's a hopping place. Real Chili knows the area well, as do I since it is my family's homeland.

3) Stillwater, MN -- Kind of a rustic place along the Dalles of the St. Croix River on the Wisconsin/Minnesota border. Boating is fantastic, scenery is beautiful and its very Minnesota/Wisconsin/Northswoodsy rural. Close to Minneapolis-St. Paul (45 mins) if you're bored or want that special spa.

4) Bayfield -- Very rustic, extremely woodsy but gorgeous. Should be able to play golf, canoe, enjoy wonderful scenery including the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. Inns are wonderful and there's a very nice hotel in Ashland, nearby. Drive along Lake Superior's South Shore is very nice and it's right at six hours. Again not likely to find wineries but dining is good.

I think early June, I'd go to Galena, late June, Door County.   Galena is going to be warmer, being 200 miles further south.

Galena is often overlooked .. but its landscape is really spectacular, in the Mississippi river basin.  I remember driving there a few years ago and asked my wife, if I'd popped her down right here, without knowing .. where would you think you were?  Answer:  Ireland.  (which was my guess too.)

Aside from Wis. Dells and Lake Geneva, does anyone know of a place in Wisconsin that would minimally resemble the setting in "Great Outdoors," specifically: i) a lake suitable for boating and fishing, ii) a decent selection of nearby restaurants/supper clubs, iii) supply of modest rental cabins/cottages/vacation homes, and iv) a tolerable drive from Chicago with kids.  (Ferris wheel, go-karts and bare-assed bear not necessary.)  If not Wisconsin, what about Michigan?

Closest I could come up with was Waupaca/King area in Wisconsin and Shelbyville/Gun Lake in Michigan.

Boyne properties.  Shanty Creek, Schuss Mountain, Bellaire.  Petoskey area.

Honestly, anywhere west of I-75 in Northern Michigan neets your criteria.

I have heard Pentenwell Lake/Castle Rock Lake may fit your requirements.  Some of the others listed are too small and crowded. Can hit the Dells for a day or at night.

Beautiful area. 45 minutes from the dells. Has a great golf course, northern bay at castle rock in ark dale wi.  Has 7 rendition holes including tpc island hole, Augusta, oakmont church pews, bayhill, Firestone,  very fun and well managed.

Was just in KL & Singapore.

KL - I got in late, took the speed train from the airport to DT KL and my Hilton was at the Sentral Station.  I had an 11:00am flight out of KL, so did not have time to go see anything like the Petronas Towers.  I did my morning run where I generally see something, but the area around the train station is truly a maze and ended up confined and saw nothing of significance.   What I can say is the train service is very good and I wanted to ride the metro like the movie Entrapment and everything in Malaysia is super inexpensive.

Singapore - There are other alums here who have spent more time in a Singapore than me.  I would definitely say to stay in the Downtown Core area with the Garden's by the Bay, Sands Casino, waterfront walking/running trails, Fort Canning, museums all near by.  The entire city-state is a shopping mall.  Architecture is incredible in the city.  Excellent Chinese food.
Was less expensive than the USA.  Found it amusing my hotel overlooked the Fountain of Wealth.  Only in Singapore.

Stay at Lake Arrowhead in Nekoosa.  There are several options there- all house rentals.  Arrowhead has 2 great courses, Sand Valley is 1 mile away.  You can walk/hike there (arrowhead lets non-players join you and you can walk the course in the evening - and I'm hearing Sand Valley does the same), or you can go to nearby Roch-a-cri, lake delevan, etc.  You can just walk the snowmobile trails as well... but they are so sandy in the summer it's like walking on a beach.  If you have a boat, Petenwell is 15 minutes to a good landing at devil's elbow, and arrowhead landing is right there.   You can fish or waterski on both.  Be careful on petenwell, parts are shallow... you need to know the lake or have a good map.  If the water is low, you can lose a prop on a couple of old brick silos.  PM me for some specifics if you are interested.

What part?

My girlfriend lived in Florence and we have spent significant amounts of time in both Florence and Positano on the Amalfi Coast. If either of those are your destinations I have plenty of restaurant/hotel/sightseeing recommendations.

Only been to Rome, so if you end up there my advice is that the inside of the coleseum was underwhelming especially given the line, they've cemented so much of it that it's sort of meh. Outside of it was awesome

Oh, I was just there in Dec/Jan.

Venice, Milan, Florence, Cinque Terra, Rome, Naples

I can make plenty of recommendations.  Just need to know where you're going.

Also, I've been to several of those places twice.
