A man who found himself stranded in the ocean in the dark of night has credited a seal with helping him to swim to safety.

Sea urchin diver Scott Thompson fell from his boat into the Santa Barbara Channel, between Santa Cruz Island and the California coast, after sunset in January.

The waters of the Santa Barbara Channel are home to predators including great white sharks, bull sharks and tiger sharks.

He had to swim for several hours to save himself, and he said that a seal helped to nudge him along when his strength started failing him.

Lindholm spent just under an hour and 16 minutes traversing the course in howling, freezing winds, leading to his penis becoming frozen for the second time in a cross-country skiing race following a similar incident in Ruka, Finland last year.

"You can guess which body part was a little bit frozen when I finished (the men's Olympic 50km race) ... it was one of the worst competitions I've been in. It was just about battling through," he told Finnish media.

Kinda a mind-boggling that their Olympic ski team can't afford uniforms that have simple Gore Tex panels in the affected area. I have done winter biking for years, and after one...ummmm...uncomfortable ride, bought Gore Tex cycling tights. Problem solved, even for really cold rides in Minnesota Januarys.

Also interesting that he appears to have been the only skier so afflicted....
