You better invite glow jr.  He will probably be down there saving your a$$.

Unlikely, I'm about 150 miles from the coast and about 250 miles from where the storm is making landfall. There is a small chance we could lose power or see a tornado but we should be alright. Its Houwarrior you need to worry about.

But tell Glow Jr to swing by after he's done helping out those down on the coast.
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
The courage to change the things I can,
And the wisdom to know the difference.

Having experienced hurricanes in 2011 & 2012, they are not fun.  Plus that one in 1989........
Fill your bathtub with water!

The first one was before Labor Day weekend and my company lost power, so I ended up with like a 6 day weekend.  My power stayed on at home.

The second one, I lost power at home for 8 days, but work had power the whole time.   :(  We had to take my younger daughter to the emergency room in the middle of the hurricane.  That was a miserable driving experience, but there was thankfully no one in line at the hospital so we had no wait.  My kids had the week off from school.  The family spent the week in my mom's basement who thankfully had power.

Be safe TAMU!

Appreciate it but we should be okay where we are. Texas is a big place. Even though I'm in the Southeast corner of Texas I'm still 100s of miles from where the storm is making landfall. We do have some friends who live down in the coast area. They are coming up to stay with us so we decided to make a party out of it. We'll have a lot of rain, maybe some minor flooding, and a small chance of lost power or tornado but we should be safe.
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
The courage to change the things I can,
And the wisdom to know the difference.

Last I heard it was estimated around 15 inches here. Houston is expecting 25+ and Corpus could see 35+.

We have an oil furnace and the worst thing about the power being out is when the hot water is gone.  Those two minute ice showers are the worst.

The one in 2011 (the freak snowstorm around Halloween that knocked out all the power lines) we were without power for 4 or 5 days and UI had given our street an estimate of a couple more days.  I told my wife that I knew how to fix it.  Sure enough, I went to a Motel in Milford (hotels were impossible to find and this motel would not take reservations so I had to go there to get a room) and got us a room so we could be warm and shower when I got home to pick my wife and son up our power was back on.

We were incredibly lucky last year. Hurricane Matthew was a Category 5 storm that worked its way up the Florida coast. It was expected to make landfall five blocks from our home on the Treasure Coast.

The steering currents kept the eye of Matthew about 75 miles out to sea, which meant we had lost power for about six hours, lots of wind and enormous quantities of rain at our Florida home but virtually no damage. Large hurricanes are a fickle thing. You just never know when or where, but you have to prepare for the worst.

So, get your hurricane shutters up, flashlights and really good ghost stories for the wait when the power is off and then on.

Texas officials are instructing coastal residents who aren't evacuating to write their name and social security number on their arm with a sharpie.

Death of expertise. Regular folk have been told over the last half decade or so not to trust the experts so, as the Chive says, they do what they want.

I'm fine with the results of social Darwinism.

People didn't evacuate during Hurricane Camille. This isn't new.

They don't respect the expertise of the meteorologists and local officials tell them to evacuate, but then they expect emergency services personnel to come and rescue them when they're sitting on top of their roof in the middle of the flood.

And yeah, this isn't all that new. You'd think after storms like Katrina people would listen....
