Ed Cooley, Providence just picked up their second top 50 pledge in David Duke. Heck of a class for the Friars.

FWIW, Adam Zagoria is picking Dotson to Kansas, Ayala to Maryland and Duke to Providence.  He's usually pretty good with the information with all 3 programs.

Thanks for keeping us updated, looks like he did his homework.

This couldn't have come together any better. KU will try to damage control the commit, but I'd be shocked if Dotson didn't hurt their case.

So now both Kentucky and Kansas have added 5* PGs. Texas will be a month removed from their visit. I felt all along if Grimes visited we'd have a chance, and I'd say without us doing anything those odds have improved in the last month.

Grimes would probably be the most significant recruiting win at Marquette in my lifetime, and easily in the last 30 years. Go get him, Wojo.

So what is Kansas' scholarship situation now? They're still after Zion Williamson, right?

They theoretically have 13/13 scholarships filled (like us). They think 1 or both of Newman and Vick will go pro (I doubt it). Their top targets are Grimes, Romeo Langford (#5 overall, CG) and Zion Willaimson (#2 overall, SF). Langford will be a spring decision but they are considered the leader. Who knows with Williamson. Of course they can have players transfer or run players off if they need to.

What this means is that KU is now pretty crowded at guard. They have 5 star Devon Dotson and stud transfer Charlie Moore as traditional PGs. They will have senior LaGerlad Vick and Redshirt Junior Malik Newman as combo guards (unless they go pro) as well as 2017 top 50 Marcus Garrett. They also have quality transfers Sam Cunliffe and KJ Lawson as switchables who can play 2-4. And while the could play small...they have some quality bigs in D Lawson, Billy Preston, Doke Azubuike, and two top 40 freshmen who will demand playing time at the 4/5.

Grimes is a quality player so he can carve out playing time even if all of KU's players come back. But that's a lot of quality players to try and find minutes for....and Self has never played two freshmen in the backcourt together. Certainly some ammunition of Wojo to use against KU.

I think this definitely brings us into name-change worthy territory.

We R Final Four

We need Grimes to get out of Lawrence first.

Fingers crossed that it rains in Lawrence and might ruin the fun that the town provides

Yes--it is a great town and Phog is sweet. However, I am thrilled with the events to date.

as a local(ish) i know that rain is certainly in the forecast.  what's this "fun" that the town provides"?  assuming he's not doing the local corn maze (btw - did it with my 11 and 9 year olds last weekend....hella fun) any 'fun' KU can provide is the same as every large public school can provide and usually those are indoor activities.

don't get me wrong, it's a cute town.  but unless you went to KU, it's nothing special.

Great stuff as usual, TAMU.

If a player is "strongly urged" to transfer to make room on the roster - a situation that could fit either us or Kansas when it comes to Grimes - would that player have to sit out a year?

If a player is "run out," he wouldn't have to, right?

If that's true (and I don't know if it is; that's why I'm asking!), why would a player who wants to play right away not just let himself get run out rather than transfer? Pride?

They would not be eligible right away......unless they are grad transfers.

Getting "run out" and transferring are the same situation.....they are both transfers and will have to sit out a year-unless they transfer to a non-D1 school.

Really?

I love XYZ University. I give my all. I go to class and get good grades. I am a great teammate. I make a total commitment. The coach nonetheless recruits over me and tells me to take a hike. So I take a hike to ZYX State, a lower-leverl D1 school. And I have to sit out a year?

Does this seem fair to any Scooper?

Getting run off is an ugly affair. Please refer to the Wally Ellenson incident. It is the seedy underside to college sports.

If Walter wanted to continue his basketball career at Marquette he had every chance to.  He simply had to live up to the expectations that the rest of the team had to live up to in order to earn the privilege of a full scholarship to play basketball at Marquette.  He chose not to.  Even after choosing not to, he could've had a full scholarship to high jump, something he was far better at than basketball.  Again, he chose not to.
