If this means what I think it means that would certainly put some pepperson in our stepperson.

I rather have Epperson than French just because of size

I'd take the bird in the hand if they could sign French.  Epperson is extremely thin at 215 and 6'11".  Seen too many of those type of kids wash out.  The BE is a physical league and you need a handful of guys who can bang on both sides of the ball.  That seems like French's game.  If we pass on him for a "bird in the bush" I fear we will regret it.

I'd also prefer Epperson, but I'd happily take French today. One or the other, I really like Epperson's upside and feel he'd be well positioned behind Heldt for two years. That said, I'd take known over unknown in this case.

I have a feeling he is not coming to MU

I wonder if Steven Adams is an apt comparison for Epperson. If I remember correctly, Adams struggled at Pitt because he was so skinny, but obviously he's put on weight and done well in the NBA.

Marquette just can't compete with SLU.

Maybe WoJo feels we are in good shape with Epperson.....hmmm

Just maybe we are in bad shape with him as well.  Think Grad transfer again, somebody who can play right away.

There is at least one scholarship available.  Here are my feelings about how it might be used:

1. 2017 freshman this fall (0%)
2. 2017 freshman this spring (50%)
3. Mid-year transfer (5%)
4. End of year regular transfer (25%)
5. End of year grad transfer (20%)

And it's not just Epperson.  There are late-bloomers (Mayo)...guys who fell off due to injury (Carter)...  I think there are going to be plenty of decent options available in the spring.

I would agree.  Epperson may draw a lot of attention come Springtime.

Or maybe we just didn't prioritize French as heavily as we did John, Cain, and Tillman. I'm glad there's a backup plan in the form of Epperson and having an open scholarship isn't a bad thing.

There's also a chance they pursue 2017 freshmen and transfers and still come up empty. Having this roll into 2018 when we are after some big fish like Joey Hauser, Race Thompson, Courtney Ramey, and Ayo Dosunmu isn't a bad thing.

I like having 12 players on the team anyway, the 13th player is never happy.  Unless you are taking a total project, and I think you have one in Eke already.  MU has
done well with transfers the last few years.

I'd love to see this team able to add someone like Epperson in 2017 and redshirt either him or Eke. I know there's the eventual grad transfer risk, but spreading a big into the 2018 class would be nice, and I like the idea of getting a raw player a year of experience and time to strengthen up.

If so, then we must feel good about something or we would have taken French (if it is true we could have had him). Who knows....

It did not seem the staff or French were on the same page,  that is just reading between the lines on this blog,  maybe I am wrong.  Losing out to St. Louis if we
were serious about getting him is surprising.

GGGG

He didn't seem all that enthused after his visit and it didn't seem like there was as much buzz about him as there was about players like Tillman.  I hate to drop the "cooled on him" line, but I think Hoopster is right about not being on the same page.

brewcity77

I think SLU just beat us for French. In the past six weeks, we took two players (Cain and John) that were 6'7" or taller while heavily pursuing another in Tillman. We already have a PF in this class in Eke that is bigger than French. French wasn't the priority that the other guys were. Meanwhile, SLU and UMass made him their top target. It happens. They made him #1, we had him pegged at #4. No shame in losing out, especially when at this point, he's not the necessity here he is at those schools. Maybe he'll be looking to transfer in 2-3 years and we could be a landing spot. Maybe we just look at other options. I'm not fussed by either of those possibilities.

I think Marquette just lost to Saint Louis. Program on the rise.

I think it is pretty hard to classify SLU in that manner.
