Happy to be wrong, but have heard he isn't close to an announcement.

Almost completely of the grid this week, came back to see this unfold today. That turned quickly.

For whatever reason, kids love school where there is football. That is a factor,it maybe shouldn't be,but it is.That is playing a roll in Herro and Joey.
Some do and some don't.  Some kids comment on how they like schools without football because everyone is focused on basketball.

MattyWarrior

Never thought I'd see the day when both programs at UW are strong at the same time..

MU and Wojo learned a valuable lesson today. In life you have to go big or go home.

What does that even mean?

We need to start a football team and host a SEC opponent at Lambeau during key visits.

Yeah I mean, last year Wojo lands one of the best players in the country.  He "went big."

He missed out on Herro, and from the talk on this board, it very well could be because he didn't prioritize him early enough.  That happens.  (UW did the same with Sam Hauser.)  Maybe it wouldn't have mattered in the end.  Time will tell if this was a bad decision.

Regardless I have no idea how "go big or go home" applies here.

HoopsterBC

Great that Herro decided early for MU, lots of other players to get for 2018.  Brett Nelson can start a relationship with somebody else.  The Badgers are a force in Football and Basketball.  MU will get there share of Wisconsin players, but not this year, hopefully they can get Joey, but would not be surprised if he went to Wisky
as well.  Gard can be all over him the next year and a half.  Wojo has lots of openings right now and next year.

He / she (from posting history appears to have some relation to Herro), doesn't think Wojo made Herro a priority, IIRC from previous posts.

I would take the Rick SLU program right now.

Fred Garvin

I was told this Friday night from a person close to him, just hope he is wrong about Joey.Hope MU has great season and Sam is having a ball.

Pakuni

Is this the part where we question Herro's academics, hint at off-court issues and make not-so-subtle remarks about his meddling parents?

Also, it's pretty obvious by now that Wojo cooled on him.

I know the family a bit and I have to be honest, Gard absolutely made him the focus vs. Wojo. Gard called him Xmas eve for his first major offer and it made a huge impact. Herro knew Wojo first and the offer didn't come until after Badgers. All the cards then fell their way. Bucky had a pretty good NCAA with the Xavier win and we didn't make any tourney. My horror scenario is they also somehow get Matthew Hurt. Herro played with him this summer on his camp team and he is teammates with Reuvers (newest UW recruit) — King (defense), Herro, Hurt, Davison, Reuvers. That is one heckuva a start for team — a team made up of solely WI and MN kids. Here's hoping Wojo can do better nationally AND get Hauser.

I understand the "go big" comment. Herro has been on the national radar since 7th grade. If you want him as the centerpiece of your team for the future, you go all in and attend a ton of his games and make him a priority. Gard and company's effort won out. There were many, many times when they were front and center at his games and MU was nowhere to be found. Unfortunately that's how it works. Herro is going to be a pain in our butts for a long time. Dude is cocky as hell, but backs it up and wins. I wish he was on our team, but I totally get it.

That's not quite it. Bowling Green has football and I guarantee Herro never considered them for a minute.

I'll defend the Big East as a top-level basketball conference any day. But Wisconsin and the rest of the Big 10 compete at a totally different level — in terms of alumni, fanbases, exposure, academics, endowments, media deals, you name it. And they have football.

Some kids want the big state school experience. That's not what Marquette offers, which is just fine. MU isn't trying to be UW. As a small, private Jesuit institution located in downtown Milwaukee, Marquette couldn't be more different than UW — or more unique in the eyes of a recruit.

I'll put that to rest. He is a decent student, doesn't have any off-court issues and his dad, while not loved by all because he is cocky, is a good coach and very intense dude who wins. And as far as work ethic, Tyler puts in the time. Ask anyone locally you know who goes to Princeton Club and he is putting up thousands of shots a week.

OK. I was kidding, obviously.

What is UW's status on 2017 kids? It seems like Wojo is dedicating a lot of time to 2017 recruits right now, namely Tillman. It may not have made a difference, but wondering if UW is further along in their 2017 class to devote more time to Herro and Hauser.

Would've been nice to have him at Marquette but this isn't a huge surprise nor is it a huge issue.

Hopefully for his sake he realizes that there's more to aspire to for him than Bronson Koenig.

Totally agree with 1st statement.

But I think any kids should aspire to be given the keys to a top ten program (Koenig).

That's the problem.  He was a good 4th best player on a great team.  Then he was supposed to step up and be 1 of the 2 go to guys and wasn't very good in that role, falling to the 3rd or 4th best player on a solid team.

It will also be interesting to see what Gard does with the offense and what Herro's role is.  If Gard continues with the swing offense, well, we've seen that make great players good and average players good.

We've also seen that, unless you're a freak athlete, 6'3" is pretty small to get a shot in the NBA as a shooting guard.  And Herro isn't playing point guard over Davison for 3 years.

I don't deny that Gard made him a bigger priority. I'm just not going to get all worked up about Herro. Seemed like a nice player and definitely would have taken him, but he's not someone MU NEEDED to get. Wish him well w Bucky, except when they play Marquette.

DJO's Jaw

I really hope we don't lose out on two recruits in two days. I'm sure the team will be fine either way, but that would be pretty disheartening.

Yah, id honestly be quite a bit more bummed about losing John than Herro.
