Four-star forward Troy Baxter commits to UNLV
http://www.reviewjournal.com/sports/unlv-rebels/basketball/four-star-forward-troy-baxter-commits-unlv

By ED GRANEY
LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

Troy Baxter Jr. said he was looking for a more comfortable existence.

UNLV's basketball team offered one.

Baxter, a consensus four-star forward from Tallahassee, Florida, committed to the Rebels on Thursday and is immediately eligible as a freshman.

The 6-foot-8-inch, 195-pound Baxter was ranked 90th in the ESPN Top 100 last season as a senior at Oldsmar Christian High School, where he averaged 17.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 1.5 blocks.

His recruiting stock soared last year while playing travel ball for Team Breakdown.

Baxter also considered UCLA and Arizona State as potential landing spots after recently decommitting from South Florida and being released from his national letter of intent.

"I felt comfortable and relaxed (at South Florida) when first committing," he said. "But as time went on, that changed. In the end, it just wasn't the place for me."

He was scheduled to visit Arizona State and UCLA in the coming days, but UNLV coach Marvin Menzies obviously made a big enough impression that those plans were canceled with Baxter's commitment.

The Tampa Bay Times last week reported that "Baxter's absence (from South Florida once school began) essentially coincides with reports in July indicating the USF men's basketball program was being investigated by the NCAA for possible academic fraud. Assistant coach Oliver Antigua resigned the same day the reports surfaced."

It remains unclear whether the investigation is related to Baxter's decision to seek a release from his letter and reopen his recruitment.

"I was really impressed with Coach Menzies and his style and his staff and the vision for the future," Baxter said. "He wants to bring championships back to UNLV.

"We are going to be a team with a lot of new faces, lots of freshmen and transfers, so everything might not click at once. But in time, I think there is a chance for us to be very good."

#commitwatch2K16 has officially begun! Four visits over the next four weeks. I'll put the over/under at 1.5 commits by the end of October. I'm feeling confident and will take the over.

Wojo believes 4 for 4.  Need at least one of the Bigs (John or Tillman). French would be nice to get a power forward and Cain to take some of the minutes that MU
will lose in JJJ and Reinhardt.  3 would be nice.

That was the poster's interpretation of what Wojo meant. Wojo could of meant that he will fill all four scholarships, which would than be 3 out of 4.

Wore the Marquette cycling kit for the commute today just in case any of the aforementioned recruits were on the Lakefront trail in Chicago. Gotta do my part to Always Be Recruiting.

Go get em Wojo!

Sure hope you're right - if the "under" wins it will be nasty around here. One commit will have folks grumbling. Zero would provoke talk or Hiroshima II.

he also picked John to Minny and Tillman to MSU, Cain to MU.  If they only get French and Cain, they will be looking for a graduate player in spring.

Or another player in October.

Or a spring signing.

Or a "regular" transfer.

Many options are open.

Celebrating his graduation from medium school, no doubt.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

Quote from: muguru
No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

He writes for a Kentucky recruiting news board.  Mark Miller still down as foggy for French.

I wouldn't go that far. If only one commits that's still two fall commits for a four man class. I'd be fine with that especially if the one is Xavier Tillman. Plenty of time to get two more by spring (plus transfer season). If we strike out on all four I'd be disheartened but all would be forgiven if we have a big spring.

How can you have a big spring when the key recruits go elsewhere now.  It is one thing to pick up one player in spring which has been done lately, but as MU has
found out in spring, it is not easy.  They lost out on at least 4 of the top players the last 2 years in spring.  Time is now, and Wojo is confident, of course, he has to be.
