I think for most posters it is the fact that over the years we generally have had no height. Over the year's MU has continuously passed on players with height as the coaches were obsessed with guards and switchables. There are a lot of serviceable bigmen from WI that have played at out of state universities that MU never showed much interest in. Hegner at Creighton for example. Most bigmen need to be developed and you need to have one in every class to continue the progression. What we have is a senior and a sophomore. In my opinion we would be much better off, if the team included a senior, junior, sophomore and freshmen 6'9" or taller player.

Outside of Hegner, who so far is "serviceable," what other big men from WI has MU passed on that you wish we would have landed?

In all seriousness, were Kalif and Gill to decide to matriculate elsewhere, I'd sure expect Wojo to have a Plan C ready to pull the trigger on. That certainly could be Kostas, or someone similar.  I'd rather bring in Kostas than Eron Gordon at this point.

And actually, TAMU, what's the status on some of your Grad Transfer top picks now that May is 1/3 over?

MU82

I agree with others that if we can't land somebody who can contribute immediately at 4, it makes sense to use scholly on a project.

That's all fine and well, but there's a difference between a guy like Hegner, who can defend the 4/5 but stretch the floor offensively and just needs time to grow into his body as a high school big, and Kostas, who is going to play the wing.

If his last name were anything other than "Antetokounmpo" and Marquette offered a 6'9", 200 lb wing from Dominican who at times struggles with D4 WIAA talent and has no (real) offers from even the worst high majors in May of his senior season, I can't even imagine what the Scoop reaction would be.

Not pretty. I stopped updating because there are only 3 guys who could make a significant impact at the high major level. There are another 11 who I think could be role players at the high major level.

In order:

Canyon Barry, SF from Charleston
Anthony Livingston, PF from Arkansas State
LG Gill, SF from Duquesne
Junior Lomomba, SG from Providence
Kelvin Amayo, SF from Iona
Shy McClelland, PG from South Dakota
LJ Rose, PG from Houston
Chad Rykhoek, C from Baylor
Christian Jones, PF from St. John's
Christian Kessee, PG from Coppin State
Uche Ofoegbu SF from San Francisco
Trevon Seymore, SG from Coppin State
Lew Evans, PF from Utah State
Norville Carey, SF from Southern Miss

The most interesting name on the list is Chad Rykhoek. He was a top 150 player from the class of 2012. Huge kid, 6"11 260. Hasn't played a second of college basketball due to multiple injuries. Supposedly is healthy now. No idea how good he is now.

If we missed on Gill, I doubt we would go after Livingston (punched a police officer). Christian Jones would be perfect but we can't touch him. Lew Evans has good size and rebounding but came off the bench for Utah State. Norville Carey also has size and rebounding but he started for a garbage southern miss team and is coming off a major injury.

Agree 100%.

Can't, or won't? Aren't the normal rules for in-conference transfers out the window for grad transfers? I remember more than a couple in the Big 10 in recent years, and am pretty sure there were at least two (including Adam Smith) in the ACC last year. I thought grad transfers could enroll and become eligible at any school that fit the requirements due to having their degree.

It may not typically happen in the Big East, but I don't think it can be prevented.

I guess we'll know what we need to know in 10 days or less.

Good for Wojo. At the altar with two quality players. I trust he lands one of them.

Stretchdeltsig

Since there is only one opening, it's first come, first serve.  Who wants to play at Marquette the most?

fjm

If it was truly first come first serve, then Gill doesn't want it.

Think about it, Gill would have signed today if he really wanted MU and it was truly first come first serve because of his fear of Kalif taking it (people will say, yes but Kalif said he's taking a trip to providence, but how many times have someone canceled a trip and committed before a second or third trip to another school.)

MuMark

Duquesne transfer LG Gill has committed to Maryland, source told @CBSSports. Immediately eligible for next season. Big get for Terps.

You had to suspect that after he let Kalif come and didn't jump at the scholly as mentioned in my last post.

Bummer. But on to the next one!

And a big loss for the Warriors.

fjm

True. A 1 year loss. Hopefully Kalif is in and can grow over 4 years.
Maybe MU in NY buddy Kostas can get skills if needed.  ?-(

If Kalif Young commits, then I disagree. I'd probably prefer 4 years of Young to 1 year of Gill. However, if Young goes to Providence then yeah, big loss.

martyconlonontherun

I get why Kostas isn't our number 1 choice, but are there any clear cut guys we are going after, that would have interest in us and are top 150 guys?
I would hate to go into next year banking a scholarship once again.

fjm

Banking a scholarship for next year is foolish. We have 3 seniors to graduate. That is 3 open scholarships.
Having a 4th isn't worth it to me.

You watched '15-'16 Duquesne often?
