Juan Anderson's Mixtape

I repeat:

Quote from: Juan Anderson's Mixtape on August 28, 2026, 12:49:55 PMMy gut says landing any of these PGs will be difficult now that Nigel has an additional year of eligibility.  That's possibly three years of backing up Nigel.

Quote from: JakeBarnes on Today at 02:49:05 PMDo we know if Davis and Cleveland are still in the mix?

I don't think Davis is......not sure on Cleveland.

honestly... because the 27 class ain't for most.

Quote from: jfp61 on Today at 02:24:33 PMMicah gordon is short.
Pemberton just learned how to shoot at an ok level and is undersized.

why does this staff continuously have an undersized type? its gross.

And if you are going to do the undersized thing, the transfer portal is open. Proof of concept is nice.

Why would we want short guys like Nigel James?  Why would we want top 50 or top 20 recruits in the country?

Why would NBA players want short guys like Jalen Brunson?  Becky Hammon was right.  No team will ever win anything meaningful with a short guy as their best player.

Just finished his MSU visit and is announcing his college decision on Friday.

Nyok looks like our best(only?) chance left to land anyone else this fall

In the aggregate, it is decent conventional wisdom. But there will always be guys like iverson, brunson, chris paul, nigel james, etc. that produce much more than the "small guard" stink would indicate. You want guys who can play, and you want them as tall as possible, but first and foremost you want guys who can play.

Markus Howard, Cordell Henry and Travis Diener weren't exactly physical specimens either........

Mark - And Tony Miller, and Aaron Hutchins ...

MU has had lots of great point guards in last 30+ years, but other than Tony Smith they've all been small.

Nigel James is probably the strongest of all of them.

Some will dismiss this, but I think this staff has lost touch with high level high school recruiting. Getting a visit in a guy's junior year is basically meaningless when they are going to take 7 more visits after that and every one will get a chance to outbid you.

Relationships are great, but we're always a distant memory by the time our top targets commit.

tower912

Consistent with your view to stop recruiting high schoolers.
...I'm a rebel just for kicks,  now
I been feeling it since 1966, now...

I never said not to recruit them, but you need to be aggressive and active at the end of the recruitment with your top targets and you have to be willing to cut the ones that don't pan out after 1-2 years. You shouldn't tie up dead end scholarships for 3-5 years.

I don't think we should stop recruiting high schoolers, but I think brew is onto something. They were slow to react to the transfer market...slow to the NIL market...and now look like they are having trouble adjusting to the realities of the high school recruiting market.

I mean, I don't think the majority of negotiating money happens on recruiting visits. If MU wanted to offer Pemberton the biggest bag of his finalists, they could have done that within the last month even without an official visit scheduled this year.

They have continued to land recruits from the same relative rankings they have their entire time at Marquette. Shaka has never landed a guy of Pemberton's (or Dooney's) level at Marquette. Very few coaches have. It's difficult to do that.

Especially when it pushes a potentially good player out the door (Sheek). #LastYear
The portal is NOT closed.

I think our model is admirable but not likely to work unless the roster size grew substantially.

If shaka is super successful in recruiting he has a money/ pleying time retention problem.  If he takes too many flyers we pay up for gaps.
