Memphis landing 5 stars is not a new development.

The new development would be if those five stars remained eligible to actually play college basketball. But now Penny and Larry can just have boosters pay the five stars over the table.

So with the latest trims, we are down to 9 2022 targets

#33 AJ Casey - 6'8" 190lb PF out of Chicago (In his top 8)
#138 Christian Watson - 6'6" 192lb SF out of DC (In his top 3/official visit in September)
#168 Jeffery Brazziel - 6'5" 170lb SG out of Milwaukee (taken several unofficials)
#231 Jaret Teheran Valencia - 6'8" 175lb out of Columbia
#258 Malik Dia - 6'7" 190lb PF out of Nashville (top 6/official visit in September)
3-star Alpha Chimbambe - 6'4 200lb SF out of Los Angeles (taken an unofficial)
3-star Bryce Lindsay - 6'3" 160lb CG out of Baltimore (in his top 6)
3-star Desmond Claude - 6'5 190 lb PG out of Connecticut
UR Chase Ross - 6'4 185lb SG out of Dallas (official visit in September)

Still holding with my guess of Malik Dia and Chase Ross to round out this class

Looks like Chase Ross is hoping to get benefit of his rising stock and is holding out till January to make a decision. That means that  we have to weather 4 months of higher offers.
If we get a bird in the hand , who will sign in November , from one of the other shooting guards , we should consider taking that .

We've heard the waiting until spring comment ever since there became 2 signing periods back in 1981-82(?).   I think it was Wesley Matthews who said in an interview that he was going to wait and 2 weeks later he committed to Marquette.

I'm with TAMU with the hopes of Ross and Dia.

Yup, put me down for Ross and Dia too.  Then keep the last (currently known) open scholarship til the spring.

After reading his comments about schools, I am extremely impressed with this young man who seems wise beyond his years. Hopefully he chooses Marquette.

Why?

Let's say Ross and Dia commit by mid-September.  Then another high-priority target (say Christian Watson or AJ Casey) decides that he wants to commit.  Is Shaka supposed to tell them he's no longer offering the scholarship right now, but check back in March or April?

1. Just a guess but I don't think JTJ3 would actually be opposed to Watson or Casey coming on board with the open scholarship but is more guessing what will happen

2. The conversation you are describing  in your last sentence happens all the time. Usually not with a top 40 recruit like Casey, but it's not uncommon for a lower priority player to want to commit and a coach to tell them that they won't accept their commitment right now but might in the future. It's part of recruiting.

The report is that a deal was put together by Memphis and FedEx to match what Bates could have made going pro. I'd be curious to know how that was put together to comply with rules/laws. Deals can't be inducement to attend a particular school, and school can't put it together.

Agreed, except what you're describing isn't really "holding a scholarship until spring." It's holding a scholarship for a higher priority recruit until he makes a decision (which might not be until spring).

Spot on.  If AJ Casey still wants to commit you absolutely accept it.  But with so many kids expecting immediate playing time now days, combined with immediate transger eligibility, I just dont think 2 fairly similar 6'8 bigs committing is realistic.

Seems like right around this time every year, we have the discussion about the definition of what an offer is .  Coaches have to fit the puzzle together of actionable offers, official visits and potential candidates who may heat up.

One good thing this year, is that it seems like there a fewer candidates as compared to years past, that have hot and heavy interest from the big football schools. There are some of those type for sure in the mix but it just seems like we are more going against programs similarly situated to ours.
The good news is we only need a couple more  kids to say yes to complete this years recruiting.

Yeah thought all this was illegal.
And we were told NIL was totally fine and not a path for cheating.

I guess it's fine but the playing field has just got more tilted.

Maybe MU has to start cheating to keep up. I'm actually OK with that. Not that my opinion counts.

Pretty sure it's all legal now or in layman's terms... everything can be MADE to be legal.  Hopefully we have a coach and an admin that will see that and do what is necessary (legal and what not) to have a competitive team.

I'll admit, I thought the NCAA would at least attempt to regulate it. I didn't expect them to throw up their hands and say "have at it."

With NIL and conferences aligning willy nilly, the NCAA is effectively dead.  They have NO power anymore.
