Very encouraging.  Sounds like staff did a great job.  There is a GREAT opportunity for Mane to come into MU and fill the void of Markus, showcase himself, and hopefully make everybody around him better.  He's uber athletic and that's exactly what next year's team needs at PG.  I like Symir, but a potential redshirt next year could be great for him if we land Mane.  Sy is young for his class.

Symir is not young for his class. Probably on the older side tbh. Redshirt? No chance. Get a clue.

What is the fascination with people on here thinking Greg can play point? He can't. He's a good player and I think will be a great player but it won't be at the point. He can barley dribble the ball around the perimeter. He's a slasher not a point guard
Bring back FFP!!!

Having a thread entitled "Point Guard" would be interesting.

Symir Torrence is the only point guard on Marquette's roster this season. (spoiler alert: He is going to be a terrific player at MU for those with small amounts of patience)

MU makes do with others in various roles and positions and does the best it can in those areas.

He's 18. Neither young nor old for his class.

Torrence isn't the only point guard on the roster this season.

My son is born in April and bc of some aggressive "kindergarten red shirting" practices he's one of the youngest in his class.  It's really nuts how summer bdays are now routinely held back a year.

There may be other players playing out of position in the role, but in my opinion Torrence is the only true point guard, yes

Correct. I was looking at it wrong last night with the summer bday. But regardless I think people assume he is young because he reclassified, but he has said in interviews that he was originally supposed to be in the 2019 class anyways.

Then your definition is too limited.

Or I value the different skill sets of the position more.

But I will let leave this here as it is the recruiting thread.

I took it as a reference to Akanno. But he's a total mystery to me, who knows if he can play the position at a Big East level next year. I am confident Sy can take the reins next year though.

Not a good look when you post "get a clue," and you weren't very "genious" expert in your post.

That aside, Sy is capable of being good enough to contribute in a solid way next year, and if Mane is best off the ball...then...my idea of a redshirt was wrong.

I did a lot of barley dribbling at MU, most of it down my chin at the end of a night.  Lots of hops and yeast involved too.

As for next year's point guard position, Sy and Koby can cover it.  We have to see how Dex plays and whether Wojo brings in another PG, hopefully Mane.

I think you're giving Koby and Markus too much credit as a PG then. Neither of them are particularly good at getting others involved. Greg has not shown much progression at all in that space. Call them combo guards, but they're not true point guards. In limited action Torrence has shown his pass-first mentality, vision and passing ability that I would say describes him as a true point.

The Sultan

Why does a point guard have to have a "pass first mentality?"

Yeah, if he stayed in 2020, he'd be one of the oldest

From all reports, Dawson and Osa can handle the ball a bit, in stark contrast to this years bigs. (I'm not sure about Lewis' handle). That should take some pressure off the point next year and allow for a much more balanced scoring attack.

QuoteWhy does a point guard have to have a "pass first mentality?"

I don't think they need to be. Markus is great when he's on and has gotten better at distributing. However, movement off the ball can become non-existent when Markus is going one on one. Sometimes that's intentional to provide space for him to operate, but other times it feels as if everyone is ball watching. While Markus will be a big loss, it will be interesting to see how different the offense is next year as a whole and projecting Symir at the point.

Yeah I know. I f'd up.
Doesn't change the fact that redshirting him next year is idiotic and citing his age as a reason is even dumber. I mean he was still 18 before the fall semester started.

Per Evan Daniels today:

QuoteIf Mane ends up going to college, I think Marquette has positioned themselves better than any of the other schools involved. He's previously taken a visit to Maryland, and other schools like Alabama, California, DePaul, Memphis and Michigan State have been involved to different degrees. Mane is also eligible for the NBA Draft, and that's a decision he's going to have to make. At this time, Mane is tracking as a potential second round pick. If he does go to college, I'd put my money on Marquette, as of today.

Sounds like the visit went well.
Assume what I say should be in teal if it doesn't pass the smell test for you.
