Whenever I look on one of the scouting services websites, after the top 20 or so players, I disregard the rankings and look at the list of schools that are after them.

Give me the guy ranked #95 who is being chased by Kansas, Arizona, etc. over the #40 guy who is being pursued by mid-majors.

Once you get past the elite guys, I think it mainly comes down to a scout's preferences on whether a guy is ranked #40 or #95.

I think that's sensible. This is also a very deep class for big men, so I think guys like Tillman would be ranked higher in other years.

Lots of common sense there, brand.

Coach Johnson working hard.

@MUCoachJohnson Good Luck Stan. Probably wants to go somewhere where player development actually happens. Let the kid make his own decision

I really think if Tillman gets to us, he ends up committing to Marquette, but man, September 23 seems a long way off.

I admittingly do not follow rankings that closely, however is this ever the case?

From what I have found the #40 player in the country is not being recruited by mid-majors--that player is being recruited by big time schools. Also, if #95 player gets an offer from a blue blood like KU, he is ranked too low and will surely move up the rankings. Sure, there may be a regional MM or a MM that the player is familiar with the coach, but #40/#95 seems like a poor example.

Here is an interesting example. This young man, Kentrevious Jones, is nowhere in the rankings. Yet he has an offer from Xavier. His top 8 coming soon.

That example may be extreme, but there are definitely cases where guys in the 30-50 range are getting interest from teams in the middle of high-major leagues and mid-majors while guys in the sub-75 range are getting high major interest.

In 2011, Kevin Ware had notably better interest (picked Louisville over Kansas & UCLA) than the higher ranked Dai-Jon Parker (picked Vandy over Georgia, Oregon State, and Oklahoma State). In 2012, Katin Reinhardt (UNLV over Texas, Baylor) was ranked higher than late riser Montrezl Harrell (Louisville over Kentucky, Florida). In 2013, RSCI #39 Eric Mika (BYU over Weber State, Utah State) was ranked well ahead of #93 Nate Britt and his sexy (North Carolina over Duke, Arizona, Villanova) recruiting list.

Every year there are some guys that are ranked high with less interest than some guys ranked lower with more impressive interest. It stems from a number of things. Sometimes guys that are recruited by big schools commit early then see their rankings drop (JP Tokoto), and sometimes guys come from seemingly out of nowhere in the late periods, complete unknowns to everyone but Jay Bee. Sometimes the rankings reflect their late rise (Joel Embiid) and sometimes they don't (Derrick Williams).

Foreign guys also can fall in these areas. Often the foreign players aren't really viewed by local scouts so they have no idea where to put them. Pretty sure they sometimes just slot them in where they can with a basic guess. Before long, you see who's recruiting them and maybe they have time to adjust, maybe they don't.

Personally, I'd say most rankings outside the top-25 or so are somewhat hit or miss. You've got your bunch of obvious, elite kids that everyone knows will be good, then you've got 100-150 kids that people have differing opinions on. I'm not sure there's really much difference between a guy ranked #50 and #150. Looking at who has interest in them is probably as good a way as any to tell how good they'll be, or at least how coveted they are.

.... so..... how does he think Matt Painter gets recruits to come to Purdue?  Magic?

The rankings are based on where the players are now. They do not recognize that some players have peaked and that some players are still improving. Maybe coaches can recognize that to some extent and that is why a player ranked 80th may get more interest than a player ranked 40th. The rankings also do not recognize character.

Well, Kostas has never been even remotely close to one of the 100 best players in his class, but he's been ranked in the top 100 at some point, so I don't know that this is necessarily true.

Or shall we count how many Purdue players are in the NBA? Hummel? Or was he talking about player development for future church leagues?

That is my take on it, so you could say the way I perceive it is making it up. However, I do not think it is incorrect, but who knows. Some coaches are very successfully concentrating on players who fit their style than recruiting players based on ranking. Given the number of high school players that Buzz recruited that underachieved their rankings Buzz seemed to not be able to identify players that were not going to get better. On the other hand Buzz was very successful with junior college players.

TAMU, yes you are right,  exactly.  I am discussing recruiting right now for early signing period.  If there is more than the 4, great, who are they.  I know you are
being sarcastic, that is fine.  Recruiting is 24/7, which is what his assistants should be doing everyday.  That to me is there most important priority of there job.

I hear Glow has a pretty good list on the front page.

Just giving you a hard time. These are probably the only four to visit this month. They'll get more to come to madness. Others are being talked to but the coaches are busy prepping this ragtag bunch for the season.

The Rag Team will be high scoring at least and entertaining for sure.  We will see how Wojo coaches this year,  has to be fast pace, maybe press more, have to keep
the teams away from the hoop as MU will be a high school team size wise other then Luke, who is foul prone.
