wow, that would have been something to see

Smooth, what you need to appreciate is that even dumb squirrels occasionally find a nut.  The reality was I begrudgingly booked the Violent Femmes for their first appearance at MU.  While it was well attended, it was far from being some epic show. Like good scotch, they're an acquired taste and not for everyone.  Revolutionary music is often like that.  Find your own special vibe, whatever it is.  Don't follow the sheep.

It was a good thing that Rocky used to participate in the festivities from time to time.

Rocky was known to indulge. Of course, he was an inmate and not a warden when we were both on 10.

Dodging MPD officers trying to give you a jaywalking ticket.
$1 import night at the Ardmore.
Always finding a game at the rec center.
Wales on Wells burgers and Cheddar fries.
Amigo's Chimi.   (Sorry, Real Chili was never my thing)
Radio Doctors.
Seeing Darryl Dawkins, Buck Williams, Micheal Ray Richardson, Mickey Johnson and Kelvin Ransey walk through the doors at Radio Doctors.
Safe House.   Having freaky things done to me in the loft at the Safe House.
Closing Hegarty's every Sunday night for a semester.  (Fun Bunch!    Just one more!)
Having my buddy's date run her foot up and down my leg while at the spring Formal.
Mass at the Gesu.
Drinking with Jesuits during the JesRes open house.
WMUR.
Watching the Marquette interchange from my loft as a cure for insomnia or a sense of perspective.
Watching the frisbee sail out the window at the north end of the hall and out onto the highway.
Mini golf in the hallway with the hole we cut out of the carpet by the elevator.
Walking in on my roommate and his girlfriend at an inopportune moment.
The first Jigglesfest.
Getting hustled at pool for the only time in my life (I was a shark) when my roommate didn't spot an even better shark at O'P's.     Can't win if I can't get to the table.
Having my freshman year RA threaten to write a bunch of us up as we noisily celebrated the ground ball going through Durham's legs.
Luke 6:45   ...A good man produces goodness from the good in his heart; an evil man produces evil out of his store of evil.   Each man speaks from his heart's abundance...

Yep.  Sinker is down here in metro Chicago. Runs a comedy club/school in Naperville.  I think he was a Senior when I was a Frosh.  Marty is one year ahead of me and turned Grill Concerts over to me for my Junior year after I left the Senate.  Senior year I did both Grill and Major Concerts including the Romantics.  I had heard of Shady but don't think I know him. Perhaps just a bit ahead of me. 3-4 years made a difference.

I remember Dave got a job as a writer for the Gong Show. I was in flight school and he was writing gags for Chuck Barris and he made 3 times what I did. Sinker was a funny guy.

Marty was a bit of a goof ball. He booked a clown act (I think the guy's name was Bobo.) Paul Winter wasn't pleased.

Shady Jim put the Mug Rack Friday concerts on the map. He had the position for two years and did such a great job that he made it a Milwaukee event. Shady got more ass than a public toilet seat.

Does somebody know exactly when the Mugrack was built?  I'm thinking it must have been around 1977-78.  It certainly existed when I arrived on campus in August 79.  Loved that place.

Grill Concerts were an absolutely spectacular concept.  Full fledged party at 3pm every Friday afternoon.  Great music, free flowing pitchers of beer.  Perfect way to kick off the weekend.

Funny, most of us learned how to responsibly (and legally) enjoy alcohol throughout college.  I sometimes wonder if the 21 age limit has caused more harm than good.  A Mugrack or Grunt's pitcher with your buddies was always safe, even when we were 18 and stupid.  Not so sure about every Kilbourn red cup party these days.  I worry about the new Frosh every August.

I have long thought that 19 was the answer.   Keep legal drinking out of high school.

Id say beer, wine, cider at 18... basically the stuff that you don't do shots of.

Tower912 did hit on something I thoroughly enjoyed while at MU:

WMUR.

I wasn't even a Comm student but I was able to hit the radio waves with a buddy who had a time slot (he too was not a Comm student). To be able to share the music we enjoy (hi-energy, dance, freestyle, latin, hip hop, rap) with a niche audience that never got that (except for hip hop) was a highlight of my 4 years there. Part of me wishes I had gone into radio/broadcast, but I was able to fulfill some of that doing WMUR.

Mugrack opened up in 78-79. Shady Jim started the Friday afternoon Grill concerts, calling them Shady Jim Productions. No kidding, full house from Day One. Lots of local females would show up.

I recall they had great sammies. One of the first build your own in Milwaukee.

I did a tour of duty in the basement of Schroeder.  I remember toting some of my favorite albums to the basement Sunday mornings.

I'm surprised nobody ever mentions Sy's Deli on Wells near the Boy Blue. Classic Kosher Deli with steamed chickens hanging in the window.

When I had money, I buy a couple burgers or Italian sausages from Sy's to cook up.  They were a little pricey, but boy where they good.  And I always thought the two old guys working there would be behind the counter selling meat until they died.

They were great.  Thirty years later walking through an airport, I saw a chain sandwich shop where you checked off your order on a paper bag and handed it to the cashier.   It immediately took me back to the Mugrack.

The other nice thing about the Mugrack was the student bartenders and sandwich makers.  While I had a great time with Archie and Mitch at the Lanche, a sandwich, beer and conversation at the 'rack was always an attractive alternative.

emort

In no particular order:

  • The Lanche
    Camping out for bb tickets
    The Gym
    Angelo's
Laying in bed in McCormick late at night / early in the morning listening to guys yelling at couples walking back from the bars - in classic call and response style - yell "F*** Her" "I did"
The East End (haven't seen mention of this bar)
Any of the two dumps / houses I lived - The Green House and The Red House
Al McGuire - I'm sure there is a thread for Al stories
    18 as the drinking age
Keg of beer on tap all year at the end of the hall on 2nd floor of Schroeder
    Wet towels at the door

Quote´´Alright, bring the band down now....alright now I´ll tell you....there we was....we ran back to the hotel....wanna tell you now....we ran back to the hotel, are you loose? (cheers) we ran back to the hotel, ran into the bar....I said ´Bartender´....I said ´Bartender....I need a drink´ (Clarence: 'make it two, make it two') .... I was shaking, my knees were weak, I couldn´t see straight, bring it down some... Steve was there, come here, Steve....Steve was there with me, we were sitting at the bar, we were scared to death, we said ´Bartender, somebody tried to blow us up tonight´ (Steve: ´That´s right´) we said ´Bartender, are you loose?´....we said ´ Bartender, somebody tried to blow us up tonight´....he looked at me and said ´Son....Son....are you loose?´ (laughter) I said ´Yeah´ and there I was and Clarence came in the bar....Clarence shuffled in in his white suit....the people, I wanna tell you now that the people over at the Pfister (Pfister Hotel in downtown Milwaukee) didn´t know what was happening ....that is a weird joint (chuckles) so there we was, I was sitting at the bat, Steve was at the bar, Clarence was at the bar, we was drinking our skulls out (chuckles)....and that´s when it happened....that´s when it happened....it got very serious for a minute....I sat back, I seen what was coming, I took a big gulp, my knees started shaking, my heart started beating faster than it ever had, I said ´Steve, you know, you know, you know.....I had a lump in my throat when I saw her walking down the aisle.....
(....) And meanwhile....by this time I was on my knees....I wanna tell you the Boss....I was on my knees at the bar....I was a sad and sorry sight....but I was planning my strategy....and I thought to myself....I thought to myself....if it´s a slow one, we´ll admit it....´´

LOL McCormick was only 7 years old when this film was made and the interiors of the elevators were already beat to hell.  Whoever decided to line them with stainless steel was a moron.

Honestly the only difference I saw from that McCormick video and the McCormick I lived in my freshman year was that they took away the built in closets. We fit 27 people in one of those elevators once...

You caught us.  I snuck out of Sister Marie David's class at Holy Rosary Academy in Nashville and hitchhiked up to Milwaukee.  In the meantime, jsglow took the city bus to campus from his home on the south side.  We met up on the corner of 16th and Wisconsin and talked a freshman into signing us into his room and leaving us alone for awhile.
