Bilas has MU at 19 in the Bilas Index as of today:

Marquette played in the consolation bracket of the Maui Invitational because Butler's Rotnei Clarke hit a crazy shot to win the opening game (one that was well defended). But for that shot, it would have been Marquette playing Illinois for the title. The Golden Eagles have good guards, a load in Davante Gardner and an emerging star in Vander Blue. Despite the loss to Butler, this is a very good team.

I would take the Rick SLU program right now.

I wouldn't just assume MU would have beaten UNC.

We got one vote this week in the AP poll.  Hard to believe.  Surprised we even got one.

Anyone know who that one vote was?

AirPunches

Can't remember the name but if I had to guess I would say the same guy that ranked MU number 2 last year.

muwarrior97

Pretty interesting we got a vote, he's got Florida #3 so maybe in some warped away that skewed his thinking on MU
#RGV #ReturnTheWarriorMindset

Earl Tatum

Glad I didn't see Florida--- Looks like we stunk up the joint on National TV.

We'll probably get a couple more. If we win our next four to finish non-con 10-2 we'll start getting some attention. If we start 2-0 in the Big East, we'll be ranked by the first Monday in January.

8 votes this week versus one last week.

Trending in the right direction.

Randy Rosetta really likes Marquette apparently. He is still the only voter for Marquette, and has us at #18 this week.

Do you know why AP shows us as having 8 votes this week?

spartan3186

You get 1 vote for each place essentially

#1 gets 25 votes/voter
#25 gets 1 vote/voter

1 voter at #18 = 8 votes

Well, speaking of AP voters, our own Mike Hunt is getting ripped continously for his voting by CBS' Gary Parrish.

This week's "Guess who turned in another silly ballot?", where Hunt ranked Duke 5th and no other voter was lower than third was Parrish's highlight.  The prior week seems a stretch since he admitted Hunt was adjusting to what were "appropriate" rankings, the week before again for ranking Duke too low.

RealTime has MU at #27 in their Power Rankings...

http://realtimerpi.com/ncaab/Men.html

I always wonder what version of RPI they are running since it is so out of skew with the others.  RPI Forecast has us at 91.  Warren Nolan's RPI version has us at 90.  Team Rankings RPI has us at 90. Statsheet RPI has us at 89. CBS RPI only goes to the top 68 and we aren't in there (assuming we are at 90 or 91).  Realtime has something very funky with their formula that no one else in the RPI world uses.

Their RPI has MU at 93.  Point is, RPI in December is meaningless.  The #27 is their Power Ranking which is stats based.

They go all the way, they just put all the rest on page two (http://www.cbssports.com/collegebasketball/rankings/rpi/index2), where we are indeed at 91.

I'm also a big fan of their simple, one page RPI Breakdown for each team (http://www.cbssports.com/collegebasketball/teams/rpi/MARQET/marquette-golden-eagles).  Though mostly meaningless for another month at least, it's interesting that our losses are to current RPI 4 and 8, though our best win is 112.

Yes, yes, yes. RPI is a horribly flawed system even in March and as such is waning in influence with the selection committee. In December, it's totally worthless. It makes the preseason pollsters who are laughed at on Scoop look like soothsayers. Why it even bears mention here at this time of the year is baffling.

Guessing we have to win for a few more weeks to make it in at the bottom.  Non-conference would be 10-2 with the losses to good teams, but no noteworthy wins.  Guessing if we can close out the OOC slate and win those first two conference home games we would make it in in three weeks.
