"We'll probably move past Arizona State unless they beat San Diego by 30 or something."

just wondering why? they're 10-1 with a few good wins.  SOS?  i'll hang up and listen

Because at this point in the year, you can usually predict what teams will be ranked based on how they performed since the last ranking came out. Marquette and Arizona State received the same number of votes last week. This week, they both played Creighton. Marquette won by 11 (and it wasn't that close) at home. Creighton won by 2. I think voters will be more impressed by our win then theirs. Arizona State does have one more game this week but since it is against a meh mid-major, they would need to dominate them for it to have a positive influence on their rank. All that being said, the bottom of the AP poll is more murky than the top of it. It's possible that every voter who didn't rank Arizona State last week thinks they are #26 and thinks Marquette is in like the 30s. In that situation, Arizona State is actually higher ranked than MU.

And yes, Arizona State is 10-1, but their best win is their 2 point win over Creighton on a neutral floor. Their one loss is also to a SWAC team, though it was on the road. Our resume is currently stronger than theirs.

MU has solid wins.   No bad losses.  That matters for selection Sunday, less so for December polls.     While I think MU has done enough to be a top 25 team, I doubt the voters have paid as much attention.

I care more about coach poll and think they will be ranked between 21-23 on Monday.

Too early for polls to mean very much. Too many cupcake games. But, now that conference play is starting, it will start to sort itself out. I will, though, congratulate Gonzaga for the schedule they have played so far.

You know that most coaches don't actually vote in this poll, right?

Yes, I am well aware of that. At least it voted in by someone aware that game is 40 minutes in length and the rim is ten feet off the floor.

That's silly, but OK.

America recognizes the AP poll. It's what ESPN shows on its bottom line, which is mostly where people see it, and it and other sports channels are more likely to show highlights of games involving AP-ranked teams.

But if you like the way SIDs and student managers vote, that's obviously your prerogative.

And that Mississippi State and Mississippi Valley State are not the same schools  ;D.

In the spirit of Christmas, I have to give kudos to the voters in both polls. Mizzu, of the SEC, is 10-1 and not receiving a single vote. The voters are paying some attention to actual schedules and not rewarding a P6 school with a nice record but a dog crap schedule. (SOS 292) Surprised some SEC tied voter didn't just vote for them based upon the record. Good job voters.

Exactly. I would prefer a student manager who is probably a basketball junkie making the votes than someone who does not follow the game . A poll is a poll, but would prefer us always being ranked, even in a flawed poll.

And it took a miracle shot to beat a mediocre UCF team.

They were getting votes until they were destroyed by Kansas. Only 2, but there was some minimal sentiment for them.

OK, Goose, you're right. 100% of the student managers who vote on behalf of their coaches follow the game across the entire country very closely. And 100% of the sportswriters who vote in the AP poll do not follow the game at all, as proven by the one dope who voted for Mississippi Valley State.

What the fxxk are you talking about? I made a simple post that I prefer the coaches poll and you have multiple replies. I've been around the block and fondly remember the Marquette Warriors having their AP and UPI ranking stated every game prior to introductions and loved it. I have nothing against the AP, prefer the coaches poll.

Since the AP is the writers' poll, they have (very consciously, I believe) dismissed the coach's poll when writing about teams. To me, the biggest joke is CBS pushing their own "25 and 1" poll on their site. And they seem to be not the least embarrassed by their self-promotion.

Agree in preferring the coach's poll, even if it is pushed aside in favor of the writers' poll.

That was a good win for them, on the road, (neutral site in Sunrise Fl) against a team that already has 3 Power 5 wins including on the road at Ole Miss in their previous game. Some of their other games are a different story.

It's actually good for a first year coach piecing together a roster. (9 transfers, 2 jucos) He inherited Kobe Brown but not much else. Gates has said and done all of the right things since he has been there, bringing back many alums etc... They had a huge enthusiastic crowd camp out for the KU game. (Sure they got smoked) Nice bounce back win for them.

I'll be curious where they are in 3 years and how Gates is doing, how C.Y. recruits there etc...
