Simply put, some teams aren't ready to be ranked again and when you put the number on their back it changes the opponent psyche and yours.  When you are a fringe ranked team and then play that three game stint, you aren't going to be ranked for long.....but but but it is ALWAYS better to be ranked.  Nah.  Certain times it isn't.
"I hate everything about this job except the games, Everything. I don't even get affected anymore by the winning, by the ratings, those things. The trouble is, it will sound like an excuse because we've never won the national championship, but winning just isn't all that important to me." Al McGuire

They were ranked two weeks in a row at 19, hardly just in.

NickelDimer

There are some lame excuses out there for our (teetering on) late season collapse v2. Blaming it on being ranked has to be the weakest.

#23 in CBS Gary Parrish daily poll today.

Goodman not in top 25.

#30 KenPom

MU has roughly speaking dropped from 5 to 6 to 7 seed range at several outlets.

8 would possibly be the bottom number for some today, with some 7, few 6.

StillWarriors

We are back to others receiving votes, and several deep on that list. Time to win 3 or 4 of 4.

Why wasn't this team "ready". Tons of experience and one of the older teams in college basketball. I'll hang up and wait for your excuse.

BM1090

Nope. Add another 2-0 week and we'll surely be ranked.

Do we get any votes after the 2-0 start?

A related question is, is there any realistic amount we could've beaten APB and EIU by that would result in us getting ranked? The biggest blowout of all time happened last year, when Utah beat Mississippi Valley State 143-49 (94 point margin). That win moved Utah's KenPom ranking by 5 points, and they finished the season ranked 114. As far as I can tell they never entered the top 25 last year. They received some votes in week 2, but that looks to be due to their subsequent win over Minnesota. In any case, they lost their following game by 22 to Coastal Carolina and stopped receiving votes.

Why? Did the dozens of teams in front of MU lose?

Played too teems dat wood have a hard tyme beetin' Cardinal Stritch and ya wanna bee ranked, hey?

28th in KP, so it's not that unrealistic. Move up three more spots and there's at least a couple votes.

brewcity77

We won't be ranked this week and I'm not even sure we'll pick up any votes. If we go 2-0 again, we will certainly be receiving votes, though I'm not certain we'll be ranked.

I think we definitely end up ranked. Lets get to 2-0 this week so we can see whose right.

Agreed.

Just looking at the rankings, the only top-25 teams to lose so far are Villanova, Virginia, Kansas, ASU, and UCLA. The first four are either ranked high enough or had good enough losses that it won't drop them out. UCLA will drop out, but Florida, Alabama, Indiana, and Louisville are way ahead of us and undefeated.

Of those four teams, all have a tough test this week, but three are against other ARV teams, so even if they lose, it won't necessarily move us up ahead of those other squads (Alabama vs ARV Stanford, Indiana vs ARV Providence, Louisville vs ARV Western Kentucky).

Then looking at the bottom of the top-25, 20-Oregon, 21-FSU, 23-tOSU, 24-Rutgers, 25-Michigan are at least 92% favorites in all of their games between now and next week's vote, so they are unlikely to drop out.

The opportunity is there for us to pick up some votes, but I doubt it would be enough votes to pass the teams already ahead of us. But as you said, let's just go 2-0 and see what happens.

bilsu

We beat two nobody's. We might get a couple of votes.

TAMU, Knower of Ball

This early in the season, going 2-0 against the future #1 draft pick and a top 10 team is practically an auto-entry to the top 25. Rankings are very fluid at this point and signature wins will get you moved up very quickly. I think you will see Virginia Tech ranked or be one of the first teams out despite not being on anyone's radar last week.

All that being said, I don't see us going 2-0 this week. Probably 1-1, but I think 0-2 may be more likely than 2-0.

Oky St. is very beatable, not sure this team is ready to beat Wisky.  Potter and Reuvers vs. Garcia and Theo will be very interesting.  MU guards
are quicker than Davidson, so plus on that.  Both benches pretty good, like Davis, he is a player.  Game will be interesting like normal.  Gets you
ready for the Big East.  No team I have watched so far is that much better than MU, even Villy, no bigs.

Are you talking about teams that we will play, or college bball in general.

MU82

No votes, which is no surprise.

Wisconsin moves up to No. 4. If we beat Okla State and then Madison this week, I'd be surprised if we're not ranked next week. Big ifs, but realistically possible.

Creighton up two spots to 9; Nova down 9 spots to 12. Providence and UConn also received votes.
