Nice to see us under consideration but it really doesn’t matter.

Getting to the NCAA does.

That said, I’m betting between 21 and 25

Good news: trank says we're about 90% now on the tourney part
Assume what I say should be in teal if it doesn't pass the smell test for you.

I was off by a week. This team is a joy to watch and time to raise the bar for this season.

Yep.  to paraphrase Shaka from the post-game radio show, I care about how we are ranked in March than how we are ranked in January.
Have some patience, FFS.

Missing the tourney at this point would be a major disappointment. If we can get to the 6 line or better I like our chances for a S16 run, but just dancing is great

The next four games are really tough.  Three out of four on the road, with a Nova team with revenge on their mind at home.  Then another away game at Butler, which can’t be classified as a sure win.

After Butler game standings will be when I get worried/excited about rankings, NET, etc.  Should be an enthusiastic two weeks to say the least and hope the momentum continues.

No doubt we have a number of difficult tests forthcoming.  But this was another impressive Warriors win.  I've been very pleased with the overall mindset of our young guns in general.  They could have hanged their heads after Creighton or gotten too high after winning at the Finn.   Instead, they took care of business and fully understand we have plenty of work to do the next month.

I really liked what Shaka said in the post-game interview, which was something along the lines of "I don't care what we're ranked in January, I care what we're ranked in March". And I hope he rubs that mentality onto the guys, keeping us on this winning streak.

Good to hear that.  It was what I was trying to get across in my previous post.  But after next five games, hopefully it won't be "pumping the brakes", but keeping "the pedal to the metal".

Of course it doesn't "matter." But ranked teams not only get to the NCAA but don't have to sweat the bubble and get relatively higher seeds.

Plus, it's fun to see Marquette with a number next to our name on ESPN's bottom line.

We Are Marquette!

As a fan, I like seeing a number next to the Marquette name. Of course, what that number is come March matters most, but
enjoy the ride. Auburn's players were acting like they won the championship Saturday in their win over Kentucky knowing they will be #1 come Monday. It's healthy for the fanbase and if handled the right way, it is good for the players mental too.

Can't wait to see ESPN flash Marquette's next winning score over the Hall with a ranking next to our name!

This is wrong. It does matter. When you're ranked, your name and score is on the crawl of every sports network. Your team is the subject of podcasts and halftime shows. You get better TV placement. You are invited to better non-con tourneys. It makes recruiting easier. There are a ton of benefits, both short and long term, to being ranked. It matters. It unquestionably matters.

I was thinking at the game today about when the students chanted “we’re #1” and it was factual. Being ranked tomorrow is just another brick in the foundation.
On a sidebar, I have always felt the resurgence of a program or team is the most exciting part of the process. I truly hope that everyone appreciates and enjoys what is happening to the program.

I'm with brew in this. Bystanders know your name. Recruits get excited. Coverage goes up.

Hoping for both a number next to Marquette and a Dai Dai Ames commit this week.

We might be ranked this week, but the real gauntlet is coming.

Kinda reluctant to update.

Real

It is a long season and there will be bumps in the road. That said, I would bet money we are ranked a month from now and lock for a bid a month from now. By the way, took the boys again today and added bonus. 4-1 on the fella’s this year, with Bucky being the misfire.

It really is pretty simple at this point. Keep playing first rate defense and take your chances. I have little doubt they will play tough D the rest way and confident that will let put them in position to get the W.

Great post, agree completely.

And, like you, I am really enjoying each and every game. In a weird way, I even "enjoyed" the losses (OK, not really Bonnies and definitely not Madison) because I felt progress was being made.

I'm in agreement with you. It is hard to feel like this team is ever really out of a game due to that defense.

Crazy given the offense feels like it could improve significantly.

If they were better rebounding and more rounded offense they would be very tough to beat. This is not a fluke run. Every game has a different guy as the second or third place SOTG and that is a testament to the team. We play a lot of guys and seldom is there a drop off on the court.

That's exactly what any coach should say (and most do).

We fans are free to care about rankings -- and as TAMU said, there's plenty of reasons to do so.

We're also free to not take 'em one at a time because we don't have anything to do with how the team performs in the next game, the next month or in March.
