Let's think of this as an open letter to MU game day ops from their most passionate fans
Wags mentioned the continued use of Where the Streets Have No Name. I am ok with it bc they've deemphasized it to the point where it only plays as names are announced and they use other music for intro highlights. But I get his point, it's been around for 20+ years! Expanding on that, here are a few likes / dislikes:
Like: The Kill Game, lean into Havoc, brilliant
Love: LOSE YOURSELF IN THE FIGHT --- I may have cried, amazing
Hate: Professor of the Game, I get it, we're a school and you've sold it but it kills all the enery
In general, and I can't believe I'm saying this but...we need to watch some tape from the TC era. We need more "Hot" Timeouts. Cotton Eyed Joe, whatever. I missed the student rave last night (if they did it) but that deserves it's own timeout, it can't share with Prof of the Game.
Also, nice turnout by the students last night. If that was a BC game, I think they upperdeck would have been 1/2 full. That's a good showing on a Tuesday vs. SIU-E and coming off of 7 years of Wojo.
I don't know what any of this means. Could you elaborate?

Whenever they do Prof of the Game I just sit and think about how this is probably the one and only game they've ever attended. Maybe that segment could be done at halftime instead.

I'm sure that's true for some or even most but I had some rabid basketball fans as professors when I was a student. Out of curiosity, do faculty/staff get discounted tix at MU? Here at TAMU we get free nosebleed tickets to the worst football game (FCS Prairie View A&M this season) and free tickets to a cupcake for both men's and women's basketball game every year. Sometimes they do two free women's games. No employee discount on tickets. I'm curious if other schools do more to encourage their faculty/staff to attend games.

They did it in the second half. Our huddle got a spotlight, SIUE's did not, which made me chuckle.
The production feels a little stale. I don't love the in-game "host" concept for what MU does. Don't know if it adds much.
The "Student Section Party" timeout makes me cringe. Soooo forced.

Yes, there's a discount. And any donations can be auto-deducted from their paycheck.
Does the pep band not play in the 2nd half anymore?!? Too much DJ Snack Daddy.
The "Student Section Party", most students just stand around. Does anyone studentseven know the song or beat? They looked lost like everyone else. The lights off was sort of neat during it.
Halftime was excellent!
liked it for years but its so exhausted at this point. time to get rid of thunderstruck tip off music.

I agree way more band!! Yet, seems like the DJ spins mixes does that happen at NBA/Bucks games?
I hope FS1 is a heck of a lot better than FS2. Simkins is lame, but not as lame as peddling him as a "three-time NBA champion." He wasn't even on the playoff roster for two of them.

I moved seats this year to the corner closest to the band, so I am one of the few people who want less band.
The atmosphere last night was good for a game vs SIUE on a tuesday. It would have been empty with the previous regime was still in charge.
Also of note, the more recent wojo assistant coaches all lost last night, all as home favorites. LMU, Albany, and Pitt.

I assume you're referencing Presutti? If so, I don't think it's fair to hang a loss (or a win) on the Assistant AD of Scouting.
That being said, Capel is in big trouble - I honestly wouldn't be surprised if he gets let go before the season is out. It'll be interesting to see if both Wojo and Capel make their way back to Duke to "mentor" Scheyer.
Kind of wish they would quietly retire the playing of "Jump Around" in the 2nd half. If you're going to rip off someone else's shtick, at least steal something that's not so recognizable to the locals.
And this was driven home to me last night. Two guys in row in front of me and 2 seats over. Marquette guy decked out in blue and gold, his guest wearing Wisconsin sweatshirt. At the conclusion of "Jump Around" UW guy turns to his MU pal and says "do you guys play 'On Wisconsin ' and ' Varsity ' too?

I maintain that MU played Jump Around well before UW. But no one can debate that UW has made Jump Around famous.
That would only be locals recognizing this fact only. Most people from out of state don't even follow UW anything unless we play them in basketball. Is there a song at Indiana or Illinois football games like jump around we shouldn't play during our basketball games either?
It's a song and it's not "theirs" to most of us out of towners.
Jump Around is played in thousands of Arenas all over the country.

It certainly is known to be "theirs" by people outside of the state. You have to live under a rock not to know that UW football has made "Jump Around" pretty relevant for the past 25 years. It's shown on pretty much every week during football games and visiting fans (and players) make it part of their gameday experience.

If I polled everyone at work tomorrow who happened to be football and basketball fan they would not know this. None of my friends who are rabid sports fans would know this. It really is a Wisconsin perspective thing. You have to give a crap about Wisconsin sports (love them or hate them) to even recognize this. Nationally no one notices or cares.

I did google it. It does look like a fun tradition. The Wisconsin local news outlet doing an in depth report on it said SI listed it second only to Iowa's "wave" as a great college football tradition. I have to admit I didn't know the wave started there either.
As a peripheral college football fan I guess I should have known that. On a side note when I first googled "jump around" ND was second to Wisconsin for playing that song. So I think that lends more credibility to those who want to stop playing it at MU games.

The "wave" started at the U of Washington. The "Wave" at Iowa is when everyone in the stadium turns to the Children's Hospital that overlooks Kinnick and waives to the kids watching. It's a new thing but very, very cool.
As much as it pains me, Wisconsin has owned Jump Around. Broadcasts come back from the commercial break between quarters early to show it.
One thing I remember from MU was showing a montage video that included the student clapping over their heads and going back and forth while doing it from the Al days. Does that still happen? Yelling "Give 'Em Hell Shaka" would be cool too as an homage to the Al days.

This I disagree with. It was a top 5 single on the charts (when charts were still a big deal). The album it was on went multi-platinum because of it. Its one of the most famous songs of the 90s and was around for over 5 years before the tradition ever started at UW. Its played at many sporting events because its an extremely well known, seminal song without UW ever touching it. Thats like if Thunderstruck before MU games becoming some massive tradition well known all over and people saying Thunderstruck is well known and popular cause of MU.
That being said, the MU version is also played out. Rick Smith was fun, but I wish that had died with the Bradley Center.
This thread has shown that MU desperately needs some help with Gameday. Everything is old and tired (none of it is a proper dyed in the wool tradition) and not befitting a major program with a huge budget playing in an NBA arena. Hell, the thread has focused more on other school traditions than MU game experience.
Also, if you're going to an early season Marquette game wearing a Wisconsin shirt, you're a loser. I'd say the same if you were at the Kohl Center wearing yellow last night.

Last night when condensation paused the game right after the tip, it became a mini-bat moment and the DJs scrambled. Rick started jumping to random music and the place went nuts. That was a "We're Back" moment for me.

UW football also plays "Where the Streets Have No Name" as their hype video before they come onto the field. One local reporter accused MU of stealing that too, even though MU probably used it before there was a video board at Camp Randall.
I've long maintained that college traditions are revered by the people that went to the schools and "meh" to everyone else. Although after the UW Army football game, watched a bunch of West Point alums stand at attention and sing their alma mater with their players. That was cool.

0 stands for the amount of NCAA tournament games won by Markus during his 4 years at Marquette.
0 also stands for the amount of times that Markus made his teammates better.
Markus was a very talented offensive individual player but he never won a NCAA tournament game or a conference championship during his 4 years at MU and he failed to make his teammates better.

The conference Markus played in shared a name with the best basketball conference ever created but that's about it. Syracuse, Louisville, UCONN, Pitt, ND and WVU were gone before he got to MU. His day will come and it will be deserved. But he's not by any stretch the best player produced by MU and didn't deserve to be honored as such.

South Florida and Rutgers were gone too, and Providence, Seton Hall, and St John's were down there with them and DePaul. Sure, the top was better, but the league quality night in and night out was better when Howard was there.
And how many multi-time All-Americans played at Marquette? He might not be the best, but he's on the short list, and higher up than many want to admit.

the reason that went up is Crean told the guys he inherited from Deane that before they left they'd hang a banner, and they almost did if not for Steve Logan's coast to coast lay in to send the game against Memphis to OT which Cincy eventually won. Besides, winning the GAS that year was a turning point for the program. All of us up there just wanted to beat Tennessee so we avoided UAA, instead we won the whole damn thing.
No, I'm talking about the 2005 GAS. The one where I beleive we lost one of the buy games at home.
That GAS run went as so:
Home vs. Winthrop L 64–71
vs. Eastern Washington W 83–73
vs. Oral Roberts W 73–70
vs. South Carolina W 92–89 OT
That's watered down.

It was more than that game. He was a very good player who developed into an NBA draft pick.

Cat might be out of the bag since I don't know that they'd unretire a jersey, but feels like a Ring of Honor makes sense with jerseys being retired for set criteria (AA, BEPOY, etc.). Not sure what the criteria would be, but might avoid some of this. I think UNC does it that way.

Maybe I was thinking of the CBE banner where he listed the rankings of the teams when we played them. If memory serves it was we beat #9 Duke. Duke ended that season 22-11 overall, 8-8 in conf, they lost in first round of the ACCT and 1st round of the NCAAs (a 6 seed that lost to 11 seed VCU). That right there is some of Tommy's best work. Disagree about Jimmy. My personal opinions aside his poor D cost us that buzzer beater against Washington in 10, his SR year we were 11th in the BE, and he barely played on the 08-09 team. His NBA career is amazing but his MU career is highlighted by one 30pt game, shutting down Tu Holloway, and two clutch shots against average UConn & SJU teams.

Everything seemed disjointed last night. Had no idea when the band should play versus dj music. Even Snack Daddy seemed off by trying to mix too many songs together. Choices were weird and it just didn't work. My favorite was when they edited out the word sex from a Maroon 5 song.
MU has gotten a lot of negative feedback (calls, emails) about the DJ's/in-game hosts, but for whatever reason keeps them around.

And they were ranked. That was the best MU crowd at Fiserv to date. Lots of holiday cheer pregame.
I think gameday presentation, the giveaways, the music played, etc is a balancing act depending on who you're targeting. Most of the presentation is geared toward the students/younger alumni, and that's the way it should be IMO. The younger crowd is the programs future and they need to remain engaged. At age 67 I'm an old goat. I don't need to be entertained during timeouts and I don't need to be given stuff. I'm primarily interested in the game ( and a clear path toward cold beer at halftime).
So in terms of gameday presentation, whatever keeps the students coming and keeps them engaged is OK by me. I love the games where I don't have to see those yellow tarps covering seats at the rear of the student sections. Ring out Ahoya.

Well I am a month shy of 75 and I don't recall all the hoopla before the games; of course that was more than 50 years ago. They would announce the starters for each team, the prep band would play the national anthem usually sung by a student soloist; the students would all yell "give'em hell, Al" and they would start play. At half time the cheer squad would do their thing. I actually sung the anthem at a game and was greeted with the classic Bronx cheer; all in good fun because the soloist was usually a pretty coed.

Friday night's are great when the opponent is a big one. Friday night's are terrible when you have a cupcake. People are just going to find something else to do. Ask any event planner, and they will tell you that it is the worst night to plan something unless it is something really big.

In the 1970s, we spent virtually the entire decade ranked in the top 20 AP and UPI; most of the time in the top 10 in both polls; and often the top 5 for weeks or the entire season.
There was no need to storm any courts. The entire country knew how good M U was.

A journey of 1,000 miles begins with a single step. Last night was the first step!
Walking out of FF last night reminded me of walking out the BC in December of '89. It was KO's first year and he had a chip on his shoulder and was hell bent on building a program and making himself a star. We played ND on a Saturday afternoon and beat them and the following Saturday we hosted Michigan and the place was electric. We lost that day, but there was not one person walking out that did not think KO was different and the program was in good hands. Last night showed to me that folks can go from apathic about a program to big time fans quickly. The MU basketball program is in great hands and I could not be happier about the future of the program.
Fortunately Shaka is far more advanced as a coach and an even better recruiter than KO and we will not be waiting five years to make the S16. No one can deny KO was a miracle worker and he delivered the goods for our program. The bar for the program starts with Shaka, IMO, and the guy is the real deal. Last night was the first of many, many great nights at the FF moving forward.
This was not a Wojo coached or recruited team for sure. We have lots of holes yet to address but now feel they WILL be addressed by Smart and the staff and more importantly, the players.
This is going to be an exciting bunch if we improve on some obvious deficiencies but there is a decided upside that was seen last night that I've not seen for quite a while.

Best atmosphere in quite some time. There was a lot of Orange in the crowd, and they made some noise, too. In contrast to UW fans, the Illini fans were knowledgeable and civil. A home-and-home, or neutral site, with Illinois would be mutually beneficial for both programs. 3 games annually vs. the Big Ten (WI, Gavitt, & other) would improve the SOS and provide a good barometer of progress.

Shame if so, the Big 12 was probably meant to replace it but with the conference taking a hit and not having any geographical overlap with us that challenge won't have the same appeal.

Shaka a better recruiter than KO? TBD...and KO had sh&! facilities to recruit to, coming of an arctic zone in the programs history.

Shaka has been a top five recruiter the past 5+ years. KO was a very good recruiter, but far from elite as a HC.
No doubt on the rest of your post and that is why the starting point is much higher for Shaka over KO.
There were several Illini fans around me. They couldn't stop talking about how into the game the crowd was, how large it was, and how crazy the student section was. Lots of comments about wishing their students were like ours.
I think this win was hugely important for the future of the program. The current seniors have only known COVID and two seasons that seemed promising that ended in crushing failure. The young alumni have only known the same...plus an additional 5 years of disappointment. No question that had the administration not pulled the plug, home games would have been a brutal experience for everyone. While everyone (besides Nolongerwarriors) is excited about the Shaka era, my sense was that there was still some hesitation in believing that things could get better. Last night was only one data point, but it was an important first step in building that trust back up again. I still expect an up and down season, but here's hoping I'm wrong and Shaka can build on this.
I can also say with certainty that even if we lose, I will enjoy watching a Shaka loss a lot more than watching a Wojo loss. Love the style of play and love the fight. We'll see if I'm still saying that when we face a team who can break a press with ease and we're on the wrong end of layup line.

Great post and I agree completely. Shaka's first team has already passed my eye test. Win or lose, I will enjoy a Shaka led program.
As for the administration, Shaka is going to make them look awfully smart and save some jobs. Aside from filling the FF, this program is going to fill the classrooms again.

I'm not sure how good this team will be this season, but if they aren't as good as they looked Monday, at least they're interesting.
And who knows...maybe they'll be a little bit good too.
I think the biggest part that was missed coming onto this season was that our HC actually has been a successful HC for a long time. Having an inexperienced coach definitely is a learning curve for a program and this time we have a guy who knows what he wants from his team. I thought his experience, and system, would provide an additional 3-4 wins out of the gate. I have zero idea if this team is going be good, but I am confident they will be interesting to watch and battle every night.
Going into the season I thought about Pitino taking walk ons to the E8 and almost beat Duke. Not saying this team will do the same, only that experienced, good coaches make a big difference. I said it yesterday, I believe this team will be remembered for a long time for building the foundation of the program. I am 100% in because if Shaka cannot turn this program around it might never happen.

Could not agree more. MU was fortunate to win that game, but our coach put his team in the position to find a way to win. It's a young team, and I think people are getting a little too high off of one win, but MU is going to play hard every night while not being at a competitive disadvantage because of coaching. If the recruiting comes, and by all accounts it should, I can't wait to see where Shaka takes this program. Player development, game preparation, and in-game coaching/adjustments are no longer a concern in my book.

This is an excellent point.
Many wish that Shaka hadn't turned us down in 2014, and I'm among those who wished that back then. But every one of us is shaped by his or her life's experiences, and Shaka's less-than-satisfying experience at Texas almost certainly made him a better coach for Marquette. Assuming the administration doesn't eff with him and that fans don't turn on him, we might finally have our own version of Mark Few and Jay Wright.
My knee-jerk reaction to his loss to the midgets of Abilene Christian was visceral. But after I had a few days to settle down, I came to share the same viewpoint that you and other early Shaka supporters have. He is a unique individual who just might be tailor-made for Marquette (and vice versa). I'm excited to see what the future can bring.
I plan to enjoy all the ups and downs that this season has in store for us, and I think coming years will be very good indeed.
We had a different experience than most, or so it appears.
We had four UofI students next to us and they were quite possibly the most obnoxious fans I've ever sat next to ever. I don't care if fans want to yell at the court, but they would make a point to turn and try and start sh*t with any MU fan within earshot. The whole game was "that we were lucky they were playing us, they shouldn't waste their time with teams like MU", etc. At one point I was watching the game and the kid randomly yells at me, Illinois literally has everything better than us on and off the court. ha. I'm from Illinois originally and I know that's false. so i simply said, didn't you drive up from your bankrupt state to sit in one of the newest arenas in the NBA, home of the world champs? lol They didn't like at the end of the game when I simply asked them why they were so quiet. as they all started yelling back at me, i smiled and pointed at the scoreboard.
The older Illinois fans behind us were very nice and knowledgeable, but his first question was, why is it so empty in here? they liked the arena and were complementary to how hard our team plays. they were shocked when i told them that we were picked 10th in the BE. Said we are going to surprise a lot of people this year.
I, for one, was disappointed by the crowd. First big game we could attend in person in 18 months and plenty of season ticket holders threw their seats on the secondary market. The MU that showed up were awesome. But that stadium could have been deafening. I'm front row upper and i turned around at tip off and our section near mid court was about 80% Illinois fans.

Even with a ranked opponent, I was pleasantly shocked at the energy in the building throughout the game given the far less than ideal day of the week and start time.
Well, MU plays in a building (17,341) that is much bigger than most Big Ten arena's. Including Illinois. (15,544) MU had 14,631 for a 6pm, Monday night game. Student section had about 2,400 students in attendance. Much bigger than most student sections even hold in the country. So, yes do we wish we had 16k, sure. Yet, maybe this win and a solid showing this weekend will make the 13k games into 16 k game down the road. We shall see.
I really liked when they posted the number of deflections and announced the in game number. Hopefully all MU fans will understand that number by the end of the season. IMO, 32=Win

There is no better whistle in basketball than the five or ten second whistle. That will get me out of my seat every time.
Agreed, Goose. I went NUTS in the stands when they got the 10 second against Illinois.
Truly a "knock them completely out of rhythm" win

There once was era of MU basketball that saw the violation every game for 13 years. Since then, only by programs I envisioned MU to be.
Is this fact or hyperbole?
jesmu
The trademark of the program. There seldom was a game without a backcourt violation.

We've gone from the students chanting "FIRE WOJO" during intros to chanting "SHAKA" on ten second violations.
Yes—love it. And love Shaka acknowledging the student section when they do as well.
They are quickly building a fantastic relationship.

I was thinking at the Illinois game that there is an opportunity for marketing here.
Scion Dental (insert company here) $100 donation to the MACC Fund for each 10 second call.
I think we have had 3 so far this year.
"One Ten-Second Call, That's All."
Getting 14K in the building on a Monday at 6pm is really an impressive feat. Toss in the November timeframe, and it is even more impressive. The Bucks, even this year, are not guaranteed that on week nights until after Christmas.

Goose- I'm ready for a return to that era.

But the people who bought those seats will likely be coming from the same region or farther... so i think it has more to do with people not wanting to drive up to see a blow out. That was my excuse to my fiancé. Gladly will eat crow and now owe her a trip to a game.
Long drive up from Galway

I agree way more band!! Yet, seems like the DJ spins mixes does that happen at NBA/Bucks games?
Uh yeah. It's almost 2022.
The music is for the students. Not nostalgic alumns.

It's been clearly established that Ralph and Potsie went to UWM.

Or did they? Wisconsin-Milwaukee? Or UW-M?

90% of the people you see wearing Badger gear did not attend.

On this side of the lake, the equivalent is called Wal-Mart Wolverines.

They literally mentioned several times that they went to UW-Milwaukee.
And the costume people on that show were super lazy. Look at those authentic 50's/early 60's hairstyles those guys have. I am also quite certain that Potsie did not earn an Athletic letter at Madison.

I think Potsie earned his letter in the Glee Club.

From 1956-65, UWM's colors were red and white and they were known as the Cardinals. Not for one second do I believe the costumes people actually knew that, but believe it or not, those colors were accurate.

I think they should have kept "Green Gulls" as a nickname though.

1972: The UWM Athletics Department adopts "Trouble," a North American Golden Panther, to serve as the living mascot of the UWM Panthers at that season's basketball games. Around this same time, the human version of the mascot is named "Victor E. Panther."
1981: The UWM Post publishes "Victor E. Panther 'takes to the woods,'" a story about the declining popularity of the panther mascot on campus.
1990: UWM Athletics enter NCAA Division I, leading to a resurgence in popularity of athletics in general and the panther in particular.
2007: Victor E. "graduates" from UWM and is replaced by Pounce the Panther at the October Panther Madness.
The mascot not graduating until he was 35 is the most UWM thing ever. Many attend, few gradutate.
