It should've been raised on his Senior Night. All American and all time scoring leader in the best basketball conference ever created. Great representative of the university on top of it.

Jerel wasnt retired. Markus doesnt need to be. I'm fine if he is, but its not something that needs to occur. And when it does happen it should be many many years from now.

To be fair Jerel barely beat out George Thompson, Lazar was hot on his heels the next year. What Markus did was obliterate the scoring record and even Thompsons record if you count all of Markus' shots as 2s.
Retire Terry Rand's jersey!

The conference Markus played in shared a name with the best basketball conference ever created but that's about it. Syracuse, Louisville, UCONN, Pitt, ND and WVU were gone before he got to MU. His day will come and it will be deserved. But he's not by any stretch the best player produced by MU and didn't deserve to be honored as such.

South Florida and Rutgers were gone too, and Providence, Seton Hall, and St John's were down there with them and DePaul. Sure, the top was better, but the league quality night in and night out was better when Howard was there.

And how many multi-time All-Americans played at Marquette? He might not be the best, but he's on the short list, and higher up than many want to admit.

All of this.

In my lifetime, it's Wade 1, big gap, Howard 2, big gap, Crowder, little gap and then a group of guys (Diener, Hayward, Jackson, etc.).

0 stands for the amount of NCAA tournament games won by Markus during his 4 years at Marquette.

0 also stands for the amount of times that Markus made his teammates better.

Markus was a very talented offensive individual player but he never won a NCAA tournament game or a conference championship during his 4 years at MU and he failed to make his teammates better.

I mean, he didn't get to go once due to Covid so who knows.

Your second sentence is false.

Markus will get his number retired, and deservedly so.  He was a two time all American (Butch Lee is the only other to make that claim), and every other All American but Sam Worthen had their number retired .

I should have said "consensus All Americans,"  which means you have to be named first or second team in all of AP, Sporting News, NABC and USBWA.

But I was wrong about that anyway, so nevermind.

Doc's career at MU was disappointing imo. Top 5 ranked player nationally, our most highly rated recruit ever. No way his jersey belongs in the rafters. Markus is a different story.

I'm on the Doc's career was underwelming train too.  He's # is retired bc he was on TNT when Tom Crean was coach.

During TC's era we led the league in Banners.  He retired Earl Tatum's # when there was zero call for it.  He hung a banner for winning a watered down GAS.  He retired Doc's # bc Doc was famous.  And then he took a giant crap on George Thompson's legacy.  Great times!

I appreciate you not crapping on the CBE banner which is my favorite banner of all time!

I love how Scoop can both admit that TC had to do a lot to market the program, then simultaneously get annoyed for how he marketed the program.

Hope you're not talking about the "watered down" GAS field that included five NCAA tournament teams (out of a field of eight) including the national runner up (Indiana).

Markus didn't win anything except a January game against #1. Travis's #34 and Crowder's #32 belong up there before Markus. Both were were great players who brought us conference titles and deep tourney runs.

the reason that went up is Crean told the guys he inherited from Deane that before they left they'd hang a banner, and they almost did if not for Steve Logan's coast to coast lay in to send the game against Memphis to OT which Cincy eventually won. Besides, winning the GAS that year was a turning point for the program. All of us up there just wanted to beat Tennessee so we avoided UAA, instead we won the whole damn thing.

No, I'm talking about the 2005 GAS.  The one where I beleive we lost one of the buy games at home.

That GAS run went as so:

Home vs. Winthrop           L 64–71

vs. Eastern Washington   W 83–73
vs. Oral Roberts                   W 73–70
vs. South Carolina           W 92–89 OT

That's watered down.

TC never hung a banner for the 2005 GAS.  It was for the 2001 one.

I love Travis but his two upperclassmen years were NIT appearances despite another NBA player on the team and his freshman year was an embarrassing exit. He was a great player but I do feel like some people put him on a weird pedestal because of one NCAA hero mode game.
