Can we keep one, two, or all three of our top returning players?
Can we keep Aidoo and the other incoming Freshmen?
What about the Tex recruits?
What does Skaka being to the table from a impact transfer standpoint??
*Personally, I feel SS is the best possible option for solidifying this roster short-term.
Mentioned in another thread, Shaka's first task after meeting with the current team ought to be hopping a flight to Charlotte to see Jonas Aidoo.
Priorities:
Dawson: likely gone given U of MN's new coach
DJ: Who knows
Lewis: possible given Shaka's connections to that area
Aidoo: was a long shot he was going to live up to the commitment
Mitchell: potentially sticks with it
Osa: who knows
Kam Jones is as good as gone. Would be shocked if he stayed because he was a big Wojo guy.
Think Lewis stays in this scenario.

FWIW, Kam retweeted Emily La Chapell two days ago when she announced her commitment to the women's team. So it seems he remains interested in what's happening at MU.

Lol, this keeps getting repeated. Do you have any reason to believe this other than some gopher fans insinuating on their fan message board that a former MN top recruit is entering the portal? That was like 5 days ago. Dawson may very well leave, but to say he is "likely gone", especially to MN just seems silly. I am sure he is considering options, but hiring Shaka cannot hurt our chances of keeping Dawson/DJ/Lewis together.
I still expect major turnover but we'll see who comes and who goes. I expect next year's roster to be very different than the one Wojo would have had.

We will have better players on the court come the opening tip next season. The big three have not left yet and I believe they knew Shaka was coming.
Shaka had a 2021 commitment from David Joplin (4-star, #114 overall in Rivals) who happens to be from Brookfield, WI. I wouldn't be so sure on Dawson. I recall seeing Texas was one of his final schools when he picked Marquette.

Dude you've been blasting that Dawson is leaving for MN in every thread for a week.
He may very well do just that, but you're going off homer gopher fans wishful thinking. Let's let it play it before we consider him gone.
I should also add that all the Dawson chatter came off a Ryan James tweet(with vague follow up responses by James afterwords)
The tweet was something like this "Hearing a player may enter the portal in the next day or two who is considering coming home to MN for 1 year before the NBA"
Race Thompson literally hit the portal the next day. Hes played 3 years in college.
Now, NBA in 1 year for him is generous to say the least, but honestly it is for Dawson too.
Fact is Dawson hasnt transfered yet. And the other fact is, no one knows what hes gonna do. HOpe he stays, he may go.

Pure speculation, but I agree. I wrote earlier in the week that the quietness of the current team members boded well. I speculate that they knew who MU was talking to, and they were willing to wait and listen to that coach, whichever should be chosen.

No idea. I'm not on social media anymore. I checked Lewis Garcia and Carton a few days ago on Twitter and there wasn't a mention.

Shame. But expected
Here where I was replying to you and again was not the one who brought him up.

Must seriously not want to be far from home. But he'd instantly help get MN to be competitive if the top B1G programs lose Ayo Livers and Garza... and Hauser
So unless you can find where I've been blasting Dawson leaving on every thread with certainty for a week I'll be expecting an apology.

For what it's worth, if Shaka is bringing back the press he used at VCU he could do worse than Hunter's back court running mate at St Cats, Kam McGee. He was always the defensive stopper. They were 2/5 of the all state first team together. Currently committed to GB.

I actually believe Garcia, Lewis and Carton stay. This a major hire with national credentials and the players know who he is, not hiring a mid major coach.
Don't know of incoming recruits, but sure they know and their high school coaches/mentors know of Smart. Now if it was Proser, don't think they stay.

Pretty sure Cartons decision is still mostly what he believes his pro options are.
But yeah, getting Shaka I think increases the odds he doesnt gamble on what I believe are currently very murky pro chances next year.
Hopefully top 50 signee for Texas Tamar Bates flips to MU
First question is what group of assistants that Shaka builds at Marquette. Retaining Gainey as part of the staff could go a long way towards keeping the team together. Gainey could potentially be a new voice.
As far as recruits go, Shaka doesn't appear to recruited Aidoo at all but based on some of the way his bigs made it to 1st round picks at Texas, I think he could go along way towards retaining him. Wouldn't be shocked though if North Carolina or Duke come looking at him.

If pro means NBA chances I would say "murky" is a euphemism for not happening. He needs to dramatically improve his jumper and decision making with the rock. Phenomenal athlete that realistically could get there but has a ways to go.
If Carton goes pro, probably not to NBA, so be it and good luck to him. No one will know if it is a mistake.
This hire will enhance the recruiting of MU, whether it's this year or next. Like I said previously, the players know his name and he has the contacts in the AAU circuit. The players currently in the transfer portal also know of him and he is not an unknown commodity in the recruiting community, as a mid level program coach. The transfer portal will be loaded in a week.
He has probably discussed the hiring of his staff and salary projections of each, as it is usually conducted in negotiations. I presume those assistant coaches will have the necessary AAU circuit ties and hopefully the coaching abilities to help the players.

This....Like I said in another thread. The players, recruits, and those in the portal all know him. AKA, he has street creds..
Keep the core and recruits, load up with a couple of portal transfer and let's go.
I would guess that Gainey has been told that the new coach will be encouraged to retain him as an AC. This allows Gainey to tell the players and recruits to hold steady. I would imagine the players were at least consulted about their thoughts on the new coach.
My checklist if I were Shaka:
Announce Gainey as his Associate Head Coach
Meet with the team
Meet one on one with the Big 3
Send Gainey on the first plane to Charlotte to shore up the Aidoo commit
Get in touch with Stevie
Pick other assistants but don't hire them yet
Send other assistants to do some back channeling with transfers, possible decommitts, etc
On his way back from Charlotte have Gainey stop in Philly and chat with Stevie
Make sure Joplin has his new address
Grab a bowl of Real Chili
Meet with Oso
Send Tyrese Hunter a "you up?" text
Get in touch with Kam
Meet one on one with Greg/Jamal
Meet one on one with the rest of the team
Get in touch with Kordell Charles (depending on how your feeling about the rest of the roster)
Grab a bowl of Real Chili
And that's just by Monday.

I would love to retain exactly 3 of our players from last year. The others, like Greg and Jamal and Osa, if Shaka doesn't see them fitting in with his gameplan, I wouldn't be too upset. Especially with the unique opportunities the portal presents this year.
Am I convinced Shaka is the right guy? As of today, not really. But he is absolutely a well-known guy nationally, and still has a ton of pull. For that reason I think he can be extremely succesfull in bringing in top transfers immediately, especially on a team that has minutes to burn. So I would expect he finds the exact players he needs for his system in the portal and brings them in over players like greg and jamal who may or may not fit the system, but certainly aren't "must-keep" guys

WHY would a top player want to play for a mediocre coach whose biggest asset is his bear hugs to players? These days, many players need a hug and a safe space.

The first thing I would do if I were Shaka is decide if I want any of the current guys or incoming recruits. This is the time to start over. If he wants everyone to stay, I agree with your list. I hope he is bringing a shopping list with names of transfers on it and going from there.
Agree entirely. We have talked about getting a coach who actually has a "system". If that is the case, he needs his type of players. We will find out in due time how he feels about current guys. The fact that he recruited Dawson is a good sign. Lewis and Carton would seem like good fits, but we will see.
Jockey
See, we agree again.
So after an entire season of everybody on here saying that Gainey is useless, now he is priority number 1 for Shaka?

Keep the core and recruits, load up with a couple of portal transfer and let's go.
^^^^YES!^^^^...plus maybe swipe a Texas recruit or two.
I'm mildly optimistic about keeping the core. We have the makings of something good again and here's hoping.
One thing of which nobody has spoken is the possibility that one or more of the seniors might stay for a fifth year. Theo, in particular, might do well from a change of scenery and change of offense. I'd love to see him in a Shaka offensive mode. Not sure that it matters whether Koby stays and would be interested to know people's thoughts on Jamal.
Assuming Greg and Osa stay, we have the core of something good. And, if we can flip a Texan or two.... WHOAAAAAA DOGGIE!

Think Lewis stays in this scenario.
Hard for me to imagine a situation where Wojo goes somewhere that either 1) Our recruits would want play at or2) would want to play for him if he was hired as just an assistant.

symir would work in this system if hes fine being a reserve still. he can actually get up and guard the ball.
Emarion Ellis is a Texas commit from Iowa who played for one of the AAU teams Carton played for. I wonder if these guys know each other? Since they grew up basically 15 min from each other, I've got to think they're somewhat familiar. Maybe he can help to fill the opening left by Symir?
As others have mentioned, Joplin is an interesting prospect too. Both of these guys could make sense to come along with Shaka.
Update
Looks like symir might be coming back. Possbility a lot of the players wanted wojo gone?

Agreed. Shaka needs to hit the ground running and get high level players in ASAP and not pull a Wojo and sign literally nobody in year 1 and claim the program needs to be torn down and completely rebuilt from scratch. This includes having some difficult conversations with some of the current members of the team. Some who may even be excited about this hire. We'll see what happens.

Depends on Shaka. The unbridled optimist in me says that Shaka doesn't try to rerecruit Sy because he needs the room for all the other playes he's bringing in!
If Shaka is able to convince Jonas Aidoo to stay and is able to convince Tamar Bates to join the fold, it will be an A+ recruiting offseason (not including the big 3 of Garcia, Carton, Lewis) no matter what else he does.

There is absolutely no reason that guys on MU's current roster cannot be retained by Shaka, unless they are told to look elsewhere. Shaka's rep as an oustanding coach and recruiter should be appealing to all. Exception would be seniors that are due to graduate and want to move on. I'm sure there are a lot of the existing players that are interested in playing with Shaka... Think it's important to see how it all shakes out - guys that would stay may be unsatisfied with their roles after the roster setttles and look elsewhere

Just the two bowls? I want someone who's truly committed to Marquette and understands the culture.
Every new coach needs a day filled with regret followed by a colon cleanse. A few days like that will really test the constitution of a man.

That would be fantastic. Then priority 1,2, 3, 4, and 5 should be Jonas Aidoo. After that I hope we keep our recruits, with Shaka's recruits, add a knockdown shooter, a 6'5-6'7 switchable 2-4, Elliott stays, and another badass impact transfer.

To be clear I have no inside info. The fact they haven't entered the portal and have all posted what appear to be very positive updates on social media gives me some confidence.
If Shaka can keep Aidoo and Mitchell, bring over a player or two that committed to him at Texas and bring in some talented transfers in addition to the big 3 that would be more than any of us imagined a week ago.
Doing ALL of that is probably unlikely but it doesn't seem to be a completely unrealistic possibility.

I agree on all counts. No matter what happens by the time summer rolls around this will turn out to be an excellent week for Marquette basketball imao.
I wonder how much the immediate transfer rule this year prompted the timing of this move. No reason Shaka can't put.together a roster that can compete in year 1. Not.having a.down year in a transition would be amazing.

Completely agree...but if those 3 stay...Scholl pulled of one hell of a turnaround. It's hard to argue, not knowing what the future of any coach would be at MU, that this wasn't hands down the best solution for MU. Given the fact that I also think Shaka is more likely than most to stay at MU if he has great success...I continue to be thrilled with the prospects.

You have the roll part right. Looks like we're on a roll and not an onion roll.
As soon as Shaka became a donedeal, I thought there was an excellent chance that Lewis would return. And I thought the only reason Dawson wouldn't was if he had a longstanding relationship with the new Minnesota coach that he wanted to continue.
Hard to interpret what social media posts mean, but I'd put this in the "hopeful" pile that Shaka will have 2 down and 3 to go of the Marquette players/committed recruits who matter most from a basketball standpoint.
DJ? Who knows? I haven't seen a single interview or post of his that would suggest what he's thinking. The word when he was in the transfer portal a year ago was that he only wanted to do one year of college and then go pro. Was the caveat that he needed to feel he was a first-round pick (because he won't be)? Or is he just not enamored with college and wants to start earning money in Europe or the G-League? Or does he like the Marquette experience, as well as Lewis and Garcia, and want to give himself a chance to improve under a coach who has sent quite a few players to the NBA? Perhaps at least as importantly, in what direction are those who influence his thoughts steering him? I'll believe DJ is coming back (or leaving) when I see him officially say so.
Mitchell and Aidoo ... here's hoping.

Curious what people think for an ideal/perfect roster given what is currently available in the transfer portal, or rumored to be available. I'll take a stab at my list:
PG: Carton/Hunter/Mitchell
SG: Bates/Mitchell/Elliott
SF: Lewis/Joplin
PF: Garcia/Ighodaro
C: Aidoo/(Tre Mitchell)
Role Players: Akanno/Perez
Full 13 man roster. Obviously, a pipe dream, but tried to at least stick with players that are at least remotely connected to MU or Shaka. Tre Mitchell has no connection to MU, but we really need another C.
The advantage of this roster is the ability of players (Mitchell/Carton; Lewis/Joplin/Garcia) to play multiple positions to spread playing time around and shift style. Would like to see Shaka up the intensity and go 9 deep. This roster would allow him to do so.

I fear Justin would be a turnstile trying to guard wings on the perimeter. And his ball handling out there has a ways to go. Maybe it would work against some lineups, but a team like St. John's or Creighton would get into the paint at will.
Taking out the transfer portal, here's the best possible hope IMHO for a 13 man roster just based on what Marquette and Shaka have already recruited:
1: Carton, Mitchell
2: Bates, Elliott, Ellis
3: Cain, Perez, Akanno
4: Lewis, Oso, Joplin
5: Garcia, Aidoo
I'd really like an upgrade at the 2 and 3. The 2 we at least have good depth at. The 3, not so much.

The 3 position is a concern. Depending on how things shake out, it might not be a bad idea to end up going bigger lineup wise and then go to a zone defensively to take advantage of length.
We'll see. Excited to see how these next couple weeks pan out, cautiously optimistic that we might have a much better roster than I was anticipating.

Wojo was basically the reason for his commit.

I left him off my roster because he seemed like he was very strongly associated with Wojo, would love to have him on board, but have a feeling he may be a tough get.

The expectation from Texas 247 guys is that Bates will ask out of his NLI and follow Shaka to MU.
Shaka was the whole reason he committed to Texas. So like with Ahmed Hill and Buzz in 2014, most of us hope Bates follows Shaka here knowing there's an immediate role for him.
I would be absolutely stunned if David Joplin doesn't end up here as well.

I noted this elsewhere, but Kam last week (March 24, after Wojo's firing) retweeted Emily La Chappell's announcement she was committing to the women's team.
And his commitment video from last year is still pinned to the top of his page. So I'm not sure we should assume anything.
There's a real "cult of personality" around Shaka Smart (as evidenced by so many here being enthralled with the hire despite his mediocre track record), so I would bet Carton, Lewis and Garcia stay and Bates comes, as well.

Getting both Tre Mitchell and Aidoo seems extremely unlikely. Let's see what happens with Stevie Mitchell and Tyrese Hunter, but again I think getting both is unlikely.

Agreed. Garcia and Lewis are a weird stylistic pairing for that reason, but I like Lewis as a 5 when sharing the court
They are both interchangeable, the big difference is that Garcia can make a three, Lewis shooting from the outside last year at his very best was horrible. Unless he improves his shot, he needs to be inside on offense. Defensely I think it will depend on the matchup, long and skinny Garcia guards, big physical Lewis.
Hope they get one more big, Aidoo or someone else, it will be interesting if retains Gainey. I do not see Judson or Presuitti retained. I would want my own people.

I'd be curious to know what Todd is thinking right now. It's pretty clear that what Buzz wanted from his programs was radically different than what Wojo wanted. I remember when Steve Prohm saw DJO & Jae in 2012 saying they looked like they belonged at Spring football practice instead of the NCAA Tournament.
With the exception of Theo, who came in built like that, I don't feel like all our seniors have physically developed like that. It seems like Wojo was more about finesse both in practice and the weight room. I feel like we're going to have more of that physical edge with a coach that seems to prioritize the physicality and intensity a bit more.

Every body is different and everybody's capacity to add muscle is different, and - barring pharmaceutical assistance - highly dependent on genetics. I don't think who the basketball coach is has much, if anything, to do with it.
Was Todd Smith the SC coach back in the Crean days too? I remember they put out a workout video of Wes Matthews ripping off like pushups off rings with a plate on his back before the draft. The run from Wes/Rel/Nic through Jae had some Dudes.
Symir seems like a good kid. I wish him nothing but the best at his new school. He shouldn't have a place on Shaka's roster

Circumstantially...quite possibly. We might say "he was a top-50 recruit who never quite panned out but has talent, and one of our likely assistants, Cody Hatt, used to be the head coach at Torrence's prep school, Vermont Academy, so it's a natural fit."

No Spring Break this year. Students given random Tuesdays off for "mental health" to limit the potential for students to leave campus.
It wouldn't bother me in the least if Perez left.

End of July, leaving that roster spot unfilled, to be followed by many more. Shaka needs to get right to adding "his guys" that fit his system.
https://gomarquette.com/news/2014/7/30/Todd_Mayo_Departs_Marquette_Basketball_Program.aspx
I seem to remember Todd looking pissed/agitated/disinterested during that press conference, which was interesting since they (again, if I recall correctly) put him right in the middle behind Wojo. Didn't exactly start off on the right foot.

Interesting. Well, being wrong is not an uncommon occurrence for me. It would be great if the team is on campus to meet Shaka.
Perhaps it is better that the players are not there. It would give Shaka the opportunity to present his vision for the program without all of us analyzing the body language of the players while he is talking to us and the press. It has only been 3 days and I'm sure he will address the team individually and as a group when they return from break.

Again, all social media caveats apply - take it all with a grain of salt.

Banking scholarships is a thing of the past in my view. Get as many talented guys as you think can contribute. Things sort themselves out so that there is almost always room to take the recruits you really want.

No point in banking scholie's these days. Numbers say somebody is going to transfer, especially when "free" transfers becomes a permanent thing.
Take advantage of the free agent market and only take incoming recruits that you cannot live without.

here's my rub on Jones. He has no outside game. That release is grade school weak. Now, Vander didn't exactly have a pretty...or consistent...outside shot either, and some have said Jones' game is more-so slashing, cutting. But I'd like to think Shaka might do better here. By my count, if we assume that Sy and Aidoo aren't coming but everything else stays the same, we've got four open slots, right?
So, if Bates and Joplin came, that would leave us two more slots for transfers.
I think it is interesting that we have heard from Kam but nothing from Stevie.
It seems to me that Kam might be a better fit for what Shaka wants from guards with his size and length. Bates also fits that description. Mitchell as I recall is shorter and isn't considered as athletic.

Long line for Tamar Bates:

I wouldn't put too much stock in that. Shaka may be giving a bit of space to respect Texas.
He mentioned wanting to play for an African-American head coach. I would think Missouri is our biggest competition based on that and the fact he's from Kansas City.

Agreed that Cuonzo is likely our biggest competition. May have just be lip service, but Shaka briefly mentioned that he has already reached out to "future recruits" about how Marquette is a great place. I would assume that means David, Tamar, and Emarion Ellis.
Bummer about Aidoo, but that one felt tenuous as it was. Hopefully he reconsiders--but it feels like that ship has sailed. Admittedly, given his track record I have full faith in Shaka's ability to recruit impact bigs.

I wouldn't over-analyze. Shaka was early to offer Dawson when he was at Texas. But Shaka's offense is way, way better for guards. So, Dawson will have to weigh it all, plus he could test the NBA waters. I do think he eventually is an NBA player.

Each day that passes, the more hopeful I get we won't have a ton of transfers. Especially for Garcia and Lewis. They very easily could have put their name in once they me with Shaka. Checked that box and gotten on with the process. The fact they aren't in the portal yet gives me hope.
Obviously, there could be reasons they aren't in the portal yet if they plan to be. But the longer it goes, the more hopeful I am that Shaka is successfully re-recruiting them.
It's hard to believe that Shaka's offense is more guard-friendly than a Wojo's. Garcia committed to MU at a time when Markus was dominating the touches.

Let's go back a few years when Shaka brings in a 6'9" transfer from a mid major and then let's him - Dylan Osetkowski - play a huge role in the offense... another bigger role guy then... now in the NBA... Mo Bamba. So, yeah.. whatever.

Wolfson also just called the Gophers newest commit from W&M an "eite shooter"
When people called him out on the guy shooting below 30% in 3 out of 4 years.
He the backed it up by saying "In my opinion if you lead your conference in shooting 1 year, you are an elite shooter".
Guy is always punching bagged around the Minny area.
Yeah don't put much stock into what Doogie reports. He paints himself as in the know but I don't know that he has a proven track record that backs it up.
Short version:
Staying on the Minnesota topic.. a 2022 some of you will remember from Marquette's involved is Prince Aligbe. I believe Texas talked to him early on, but no offer. He's a ~6'6" two-way wing... if I had to comp him to someone recently at MU, it would be Sacar. More advanced offensively at this point in time, though, and bigger. But, really gets after it defensively, while being a high flyer on offense.
Has played for Minnehaha and Sizzle, so obviously has been on the floor with elite talent and done well no matter what is asked of him. His size, athleticism and work ethic helps me envision how he could do well in a Shaka Smart defense.
He's been a man above boys physically for awhile, and that's always a watch-out for me (e.g., guys look better than they are because they're playing with little kids).. but, he keeps elevating his game. Would love for Shaka to take a long look.
Longer version:
Lots of stories from this last year - some wild, wild stuff. In Minnesota we were able to have a fairly long AAU season that extended into October. Our 17U Late Night Hoops team had a solid season which wrapped up with a 4 week (2 games/week) league in September and October. We surprised a bit in weeks 1 and 2, going 4-0. In week 3, Sizzle joined the league. They played a very good team - Minnesota Comets - in their first game and held on to win by I think 3 points. Close game.
We played Comets next while Sizzle watched. We handled them pretty well. Never was close. We're now 5-0.
Chet Holgrem had said he was sitting out the AAU season due to covid concerns. He was at the game watching us... as time is winding down, he starts stretching. I noticed and talked to the other coach with me... 'wth is Chet doing? Is this guy gonna actually play his first game of the year???'
Sure enough, he did. Ouch. Sizzle dominated us early on... things evened out after we settled down, but yeeeesh. I think six of their guys (filled with D1 talent, including Prince) dunked on us. We were generally a good defensive team.. but.. not that game.
Anyway, it was still a fun experience... Prince got us good.. Chet did.. and so did a bunch of their other talented kids.. meanwhile, their coach was Randy Carter, who I idolized when I was in high school and he was at the U of Minnesota... weeks later, Sizzle would appear on the ESPN networks nationally a couple of times... and dominate.
Here's a video from that game... you'll see our brutal defense.. but some nice highlights of Prince Aligbe (#10) and the makers of the video actually showed even single one of our players make a basket, which I thought was kind. Finally, during the season post-game handshakes were 'outlawed'. But after beating us up, Chet actually came over and gave a fist bump to all the players and coaches - I thought it was a very nice gesture... can't wait to see what the future holds for him.

Again you have no idea what you're talking about. When he calls you from college telling you he wants to kill himself lmk.

Have you followed her Twitter exchanges and might the social media itself be part of the problem?
And regardless of DJ's situation, family getting into it with fans doesn't end well. We've seen it here and on other forms of social media. It's a bad look for the family, the fans, and the athletic department.

I'm talking from personal experience. Again you don't know the F about this. Stick to analytics, hope none of your children go through this, you have no idea.

You can be a supportive parent and not come off like a defensive helicopter mom on Twitter.
To me, the big question is, why would any fan feel the need to follow a player's parent on social media. Take a step back. It's kind of creepy.

Yes..but without the suicidal issues. Probably best to try to manage your adult son's access to social media rather than fighting social media battles you can't win.

In fact in my experience, she handles this about as poorly as you can handle this.

My lord, you don't understand why or what is being done. Again when you have to deal with it go to therapy and are told what to do then chime in else STFU because you have no idea and trust me you don't, nor I wish that you have that burden.

Frankly you're assuming no one on here has similar experiences. Well my son deals with depression and I wouldn't act like she does on Twitter. However, that's probably irrelevant because the fact that her son struggled with depression isn't an excuse for her bad behavior.

Easily the most reasonable post here.
Though maybe let's not vilify parents for standing up for their kids.

I mean...standing up for your kids on social media isn't exactly a point of pride. If the kid is upset by social media, he should probably stay off social media. It's not hard.

That's the thing, she goes out of her way to seek out conversations and inject herself. You don't have to follow her to end up engaged in such an exchange. She goes out of her way to find fans to go after.

Exactly, let's not make this out to be fans purposely engaging her when it's the exact opposite. Again, her son's struggles aren't an excuse for her bad behavior.

Not really. Going after others on social media for your kid isn't really the best way to handle a situation. Someone posting on Twitter that DJ played lousy and having his mom jump in and engage with a fan to defend him is a bad look.

I don't disagree with that but that wasn't really the point. Someone shouldn't have to stop doing something because other people are complete pieces of sh#t. It's just excusing that behavior.

The point is that people are going to be pieces of crap regardless. Standing up and fighting for your kid isn't going to change that. It's like fighting the tide. You just can't win.

Again, I don't take issue with that. The point I was disagreeing with is that DJ should stay off social because of it. I see where you're coming from but I don't agree with it.
We also don't know if there's something more to it. Is she just being protective or is backing him up helpful for him? Yeah, that probably sounds a little silly but I don't have the personal experience to know for sure.

To piggyback off of this, people
do not follow her: rather, she personally searches each and every mention of her son and attacks that person with the anger of 1,000 suns. When I commented "who even cares anymore" on the @MarquetteMBB tweet after the Seton Hall loss (not necessary, definitely never saw Theo or DJ tagged in said tweet, but about as meh a tweet as you'll see on those threads), and Theo responded "STFU", DJ's mom was the one seeking out comments and telling ME to go to hell for....explaining to Theo that my apathy was with the coaching and
not the players/that I always respected his willingness to play through injuries. Basically that I was a "piece of crap" for not I guess "sticking to my guns"? When my intent was certainly not to take personal cheap shots at individual players.
The irony is that just days before, when some monstrous troll was tagging DJ in tweets about how he sucks and should be ashamed of himself, EYE was the one coming to DJ's defense and reporting said troll for being a complete pretty boy. I won't even begin to assume all that DJ goes through mentally, and it's admirable he's outspoken about it and has been a great representative of Marquette. At the same time, DJ's mom is incredibly immature and toxic on a platform that is already reeking with immaturity and toxicity, and she would do herself and her son a gigantic favor by not engaging with every "DJ Carton" "D.J. Carton" "DeeJay Carton" manual twitter search she can find.
That CANNOT be healthy for her or for DJ to be fighting each and every idiot on twitter. Like brew said, it brings unnecessary attention to things that otherwise would just be lost to the twitter void. And the ones that do get traction are almost always dealt with by random, supportive Marquette fans who always have DJ's back.

Bashing a player's mom, no matter how righteous you think you are, is very Badger fan-esque of Scoop.
Yet another scoop thread gone of the rails. Who could have predicted?

Agreed that Cuonzo is likely our biggest competition. May have just be lip service, but Shaka briefly mentioned that he has already reached out to "future recruits" about how Marquette is a great place. I would assume that means David, Tamar, and Emarion Ellis.
Bummer about Aidoo, but that one felt tenuous as it was. Hopefully he reconsiders--but it feels like that ship has sailed. Admittedly, given his track record I have full faith in Shaka's ability to recruit impact bigs.
Missouri just picked up three guard transfers. I don't know much about the rest of their roster, but this could lessen their need for Bates.
Ball State transfer Jarron Coleman picks the Tigers (msn.com) (https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/ncaabk/ball-state-transfer-jarron-coleman-picks-the-tigers/ar-BB1fh9gA?ocid=msedgntp)
Bates and Joplin are Shaka's first tests as coach and I expect him to pass. Both seem to want to play for Shaka and have to assume Marquette is now the leader for both. I will be surprised if both don't end up here.

Agree on all of this.
Come to Milwaukee, young men. The sun always shines, it's always warm, the Greek gets his Freak on, and Shaka is the new king.

Both Gates and Joplin would be prime time gets for MU.
Boring anymore announcements the roster currently stands at:
Guards Returning: DJ Carton, Greg Elliott, Dexter Akanno, Jose Perez
Guards Incoming: Stevie Mitchell, Kam Jones
Forwards Returning: Justin Lewis, Dawson Garcia, Oso
I took the positions of Marquette's roster. As it currently stands the roster is heavy guard but talent wise has 2 of the best players forwards which will help. There are 4 open slots.
Recruits with interest:
Tamar Bates SG 6'4" 175 56th ranked (quoted saying he was committed to Shaka)
David Joplin PF 6'7" 215 114 ranked (Lives in Brookfield was interested playing at Marquette but no offer came)
Jonas Aidoo C 6'11" 215 60 ranked (Opened recruiting but Stevie Mitchell still talks with him and is hopeful he joins)
Transfers with interest I have only listed those that we have made short lists not initial feelers to:
Noah Gurley F 6'8" 210 from Furman (top 8 with power teams)
If anyone has other transfers or recruits that we become serious players with let me know and I'll update. All players on current roster assumed to be returning until otherwise stated.
