Its gameday. I started the last game thread. We won. I'm superstitious. Here ya go. Let's make it a winning streak.
Lots of sports world royalty might see this game or be aware. Superbowl in town. National awareness. Just saying a good impression/bad impression to be had.
play smart, play hard, frustrate the Johnnies and walk out with a W.
Big stage today with the double-header and Super Bowl in town, hopefully they step and make a good impression. Does DWade make a celebrity appearance?
Already?
Wow.... I simply can't believe Derrick put on his left sock before his right. What D1 Point Guard does that? ;D
Anyone in NYC for the game? what are tickets going for?

They are ranging from $45 (top of the Garden) to well over a $100 the closer to the floor you get.
Bump
Here's why I love this matchup with the Johnnies,
1) They play with talent instead of a gameplan. Buzz should be able to outcoach Lavin
2) Their defense is porous (besides getting blocks)
3) They only have two real three point threats (Greene IV and Harrison). Most of their lineup scores by drivng to the bucket. We saw what happened against Providence when teams can't hit their threes against us.

Sam Worthen coaches the Washington Generals. Got a T in OT and lost it for them.
edit: Didn't realize that he didn't coach them anymore, figured it was still him on the bench. Will take Chick's word for it.
Sam Worthen was the coach of the Washington Generals for many years. He may hold the distinction of being the losingest cost in the history of professional basketball.

Should have passed it to an open Jamil on the right. The foul JJJ did with 3 seconds on shot clock was worse.
I think that Deonte;s help D and switching is improving, but on the 3 he didn't anticipate the screen, and then he had a lazy reach. Keep getting better and play all 35 seconds.

They ended up with 5 pts. You honestly can't get worse than that.
When you have Gardner barely breaking the press, it could be a long day. STJ making shots, MU no.
We are now on the verge of getting smoked.

Rule emphasis. You put two hands on a guy on D and it is an automatic foul. That has been the entire defense by St. John's so far, not one call.
Only 2 fouls called on St. John's so far, they've committed at least 6.

ah- ill look for that
As an example there, Dawson fouled on initial shot. No call.
They call a 50/50 foul on MU fighting for the rebound. Call another touch foul on Anderson 10 seconds later.
We have 6 team fouls them 2. They've committed far more actual fouls than we have.

Pathetic defense from Jake and Juan.
Nice trap - leads to a dunk.
made jake, juan and jwil look silly
I hope the quick sub was because Buzz realized he goofed with having Derrick, Jake, Anderson, and Otule on the floor together for even a second. Three of the four is still trouble.
You will not get a good shot with Derrick, Jake and Juan together.
Juan is bad.

Juan is just brutal and has been all year. Taylor misses two layups and Mayo is just not right so far.
Offense is stagnant, just passing the ball around and around and around. Larger guards pressuring Dwil like crazy.

I think Burton has looked fine. He's missed some makeable shots but getting good looks unlike basically everyone else.
Was referencing that failed trap that led to the easy dunk. Was mainly just that play.
Chalk this one up as a loss
geez. Obepka is gonna get 10 blocks today.
honestly, we gotta just run plays for Jake and let him chuck a few if we want to get back into the game.
Their d is too good.
We take low percentage shots and miss the high percentage ones when we get them. When we miss shots the transition D can't keep anyone from the basket.
Also noticing MU is really guard able. Saw it against PU and again today.
Alright, what I said about Jake, Juan and Derrick toghether....the same goes for Chris instead of Juan.

Bad play both ends, Jamil.
Making St. johns look like a top conference team
Jamil with another game for the record books. 1 point on 0/5 shooting so far.
a two for Jake!
Look how far we extend our defense compared to how far St Johns extends in the half court. They are covering way less area than we are. It is very tough to score when you can't stretch the defense.
Jamil is 0 for 5.
Mayo has not taken a shot and has three turnovers.
And Mayo just committed another one.
I don't think I've ever seen an offensive foul call like that.
Jake has had a nice half.

are the refs the reason we're losing? no. but there's been a LOT of home calls today.
Derrick is a complete liability.
First his drive leads to 5 points.
Now his inability to shoot free throws gives them 2 more.
Seriously, how can you be that bad from the line?
Derrick Wilson is absolutely the worst ft shooter ever. Just terrible!!!!
LOL good offense baby!!!
Brick FT, uncontested jam - kiss my ass!!
Curiosity, never really noticed it before so wondering if it is a actual problem, or just a few plays today.
But is Gardner really bad at setting picks. Seems like he doesn't really try to screen a guy, rather is trying to get where he wants to go next to get the ball himself.

Mayo, 0 points, 0 shots, 4 TO's. Granted he was the recipient of some bad calls, but still that hurt.

Problem with bad Todd is you get what you get today...bunch of stupid plays and not taking the open shots.
They should reverse their game plans. See what happens.
MU is 8 for 29 (27%)
1 for 6 from three
6 Turnovers to STJ's 7.
STJ is 12 for 26 and 4 for 9 from three.
Jamil 1 point
Otule 0
Taylor 0
Juan 0
Dawson 0
Mayo 0 with 4 turnovers
No win with the above, not going to happen.
Is Jamil biggest disappointment of the year? Yes. Announcers every game say the potential, ability, etc., but it just has not been there this year. Cannot fathom what has happened to him, but one of the major reasons MU has struggled.
Dwil getting bumped due to his size and inability to get around defenders, resulting in ball getting passed around. Three times shotclock down and Gardner had to take three pointer to get off. Really bad.

Because he is trying to put people out there that haven't mailed it in and our going to give 100% energy and effort. He attacked the hoop missed but let to 2 pts.
He is trying to send a message about intensity and heart, something we were lacking first half.
We must lead the country in the most five minute or longer offensive droughts.
New lineup on this side of the timeout? Buzz has to be livid when three guys watched Obekpa pull down the board and put it in.
Calm down Burton. Turnover, foul, turnover.
Jamil should sit, he has been brutal all year and can't get much worse. Good for Buzz.
Dwil still can't break press.

And Juan has as many rebounds in about 5 minutes as Jamil has in about 18.

I'd settle for Jamil's last few performances. This one is inexplicable.
Presumably by starting Juan the message to Jamil is that Buzz doesn't care about winning, just about getting max effort.
Edit: Recent posts dictate that I add that I don't really think Buzz doesn't care about winning. He's just trying something different.

Two bricked front ends of 1-and-1's, 2 fouls, and a layup given up. Time for me to turn this off
Boy, when we suck, we REALLY suck!
Not a huge fan of Juan...but at least he does hustle his ass off, rebounds, and plays with a high motor...and if Jamil isn't/can't going to score...then Juan is a better option tonight..

What's with the stripper music from the SJU band?
I really don't understand college rules. If it is a flagrant when a player accidentally hits a guy with an elbow who is leaning into him at the 3 pt line (Mayo), how is it not a flagrant when a guy tries to kick a player in the nuts?
Bucky goes down!!
Because he never made contact? I thought #14 went over Juan's back on the rebound anyway.
at least someone is showing some heart the last few minutes on the offensive end...wish the rest of the team would pick up on it.
Burton probably gets burned more than anyone on the team defensively, but he's the only guy playing aggressively on offense....
I'm really sick of Deonte Burton shooting every time he touches the ball. He's out of control and is a black hole on offense.

Sadly, I think that is the case, seems illogical to me but I think that is the official rule.
Burton still way too much of a wild child, but he has a little Jae Crowder, Vander Blue, etc. in him. Willing to try to go out and whip some ass.
MU is 3 for 7 from ft, but two front end misses.
MU has 3 total assists in the game. 3........
Burton not bashful, but at least he has the talent and wants it the most out of all of them.
Look at the bright side - Jamil will be extra fresh for Butler.
Burton is out of control a lot, but as a freshman he will learn. Jamil and Todd, on the other hand, are upperclassmen who are setting an awful example.
Offense: YAY BURTON!!

My biggest problem with Burton is his defense....

how many shots are we going to give Harrison that are WIDE FREAKING OPEN...who's even guarding him?
Deonte is playing aggressively and is doing something many Warriors aren't doing: taking it AT the Johnnies hard.
Where is Gardner?????
Guess I picked the wrong day to stop sniffing glue....

That was equally on Burton and JuJuan. Burton didn't hustle around the pick. Jujuan didn't step out. Previous miscue was on Burton who followed a cutter away from the play instead of staying on harrison.
This one was on Burton who was cut reaching on a defender and closed poorly and fouled him.
Harrison drilling 3s and no adjustment yet...
Has MU thrown in the towel?
And with that, I'm out. See you at the bars fellas.
Turn out the lights, the party's over...
Why is Burton helping there? Jesus Christ that is simple defense right there.
Those who wanted to see the freshmen, this is what you get.

Otule suck. Juan suck. J.Wilson suck. D.Wilson suck. Thomas suck. Buzz recruiting suck.

Wayne Larrivee 'dagger'. Game and season. Time to watch development.

Switches. College defense is not just, here's your man stay with him the entire possession. Teams run offenses to create mismatches, that is why you need 5 solid defenders on the floor. A good offense will get the mismatch they want.

Maybe our expectations are high, but this team has tons of talent but no consistency. It's hard to coach when you have no idea which players are going to show up on a given night. Agree. As usually one of them, to call him out today, really? If you want to add him to a list of 11 I suppose that's fine. But Chris Paul could have played point today and we still wouldn't be close.
Exactly chapman. Exactly.
I'm out on this note:
"I'd own the beach if I had that body."
Those that think Jake is not a good defender, better have been watching him on Harrison. He has drawn him for the past 4 or five minutes and shut him down. Something the freshman could not do.
If anything this game should be a good clue as to why Jake had been in the starting lineup and why it may be prudent to put him back into it.
Has Jamil sat the entire second half??? Sorry, I stopped paying close attention once we fell behind by 20
Put in Flood so he can say he played in the Garden

Easy to do when Todd, Jamil, Chris, and Ox don't look for their shots.
Plus, this is scrub time...
Hate that we lost, I hope Buzz in post game calls it like we all saw it a clunker. Buzz tries to sometimes gloss over losses with stats like, we kept under there average points like the Creighton game, just say we got b-slapped and get ready for Butler

+1. and that's not even mentioning that St. John's is still paying attention to him all over the court on the offensive end.

Chris Paul would have had 30 points in this game at least, or in any game against college athletes for that matter.
Do coaches give some humble pie?

Not saying Derrick is playing a great game by any stretch. But those singling him out today are clueless.

Yeah but DW and Jake are the only ones showing heart and effort in the last minutes.
What happened to our T-shirt cannon at home games? mystery solved bring back the cannon

Jake plays his hardest. Derrick the same. I think all the players who played in the second half gave it everything the had except Gardner. Fact is jake, Derrick, Juan, john, JJJ, burton, etc were all meant to be role players this year. The bulk of the scoring and playing time should have been occupied by j Wilson, Gardner, and mayo every game. Those 3 have not been consistent and have really ruined the season. Not going to start complaining about the other less talented players. Those three let MU down this year. Thankfully, they will all be gone soon.
LOL!!!!!!
story of an MUBB fan this season; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-IkWpm7TS0
In watching these final minutes, I'm actually getting kind of giddy thinking about the Derrick Wilson-led Marquette squad of 2014-15.
Jamil has sat whole second half, has Mayo played?

Really? He made a few uncontested layups and finally some free throws, and as 77ncaachamps said it was in garbage time. As I said I don't dislike Derrick but stop trying to build him up into something he isn't.

I've got a problem with this.
Even I can play my hardest. But it doesn't mean he deserves to be out there.
First time I actually turned the game off, every time we play a 7-footer the result is the same. Awful
watching Otule lately,at least lose competively. JT does not belong out there.
What a game. Time to hit the bar.

Just so you know, he airballed that first free throw... it touched the net but it did not go in....

Nope.
The problem with our team is that our two most talented players, Mayo and Wilson, who both (arguably) have NBA level talent, have very little drive and are very inconsistent. When the best players on your team don't show up, it's hard to win.

Thats what I thought. Buzz just threw in the towel and played different lineup to shake things up. Too bad it did not work out.

He doesn't and that wasn't my point. The seniors let MU down big time this year. That's not jakes fault. Jake left because he wasn't going to be on scholarship. I expected nothing from him and he is playing decent defense and is a threat from the outside. The seniors have no heart. I for one will be leaving the Bradley center directly after St. John's whoops them again on senior day. They will be speaking in front of an empty BC.

That's just hilarious. After watching this horrendous game that is the one conclusion that no one should have came to.

Not trying to build him up. Just pointing out that the people singling him out today are clueless. Also was nice to see one MU guy play until the end.
Nothing more, nothing less.
El Positivo: I am absolutely positive that El Buzzo stuck a fork in this season with that coaching performance today and this season. Da Coach is responsible. Jack that $2.5 million salary for next year--he is deserving.
Harrison looked like an NBA All Star Today....
Yikes....

Doubtful.
Sadly, I suspect because of this double header, buzz may not be on radio after. Was very I terested to hear what he had to say (even though I think there a good chance he wouldn't have really said much).
Though the dismal scoring contributed to it...5 freaking team assists!
Derrick had 8 alone vs Providence.
As a team. 6 assits. To put that in perspective, last game Derrick Wilson had 8 alone.
I wish we could have seen a few minutes of Dawson, Burton, JJJ, Steve and ??? as a view towards next year and to see how they gel.
It couldn't have hurt!
Anderson had 9 rebounds. Didn't notice that until now
They just announced Buzz will talk in post game

You're right. I jumped at your first statement.
I hope that doesn't happen at the BC.
It'd be even more powerful if it was packed and you could hear crickets instead of cheers.

Confidence.
Someone tell him he only has one more season left at MU!
Looking ahead, this is going to be a tough rebuilding patch for MU.
That's why this season of possibly not making the NCAAs hurts even more.
Next year's seniors have no legitimate scorers: Juan, Derrick, and Todd (who is unreliable). The Frosh will be Soph but still lacking lots of experience (that's why they need to see more time now).
Now they say they myght not ba able to get Buzz do to next game
Weird that DWade's MIA team can empathize with the current MU club's losing ways.

Surely not getting much experience at all, I dvr-ed the game...
But wont watch it. Sheesh
