Switches.  College defense is not just, here's your man stay with him the entire possession.  Teams run offenses to create mismatches, that is why you need 5 solid defenders on the floor.  A good offense will get the mismatch they want.

Gardner didn't even try to step in the lane to stop that last drive.  Just stood there and watched him dribble from half court to the hoop and then reached at the last minute.
