Does this mean we have to add a mens Varsity program?

Yeah, football

Broeker: "Adding women's swimming will improve gender equity in athletics and provide a revenue generation opportunity for the university, while offering a competitive Division I experience for our student-athletes. It's a win-win for our department and university."

Wonder if the bolded means that it will either be non-scholarship...or reduced scholarships.

It does not. It's more about roster sizes matching the student breakdown, and since Marquette is 55% women, my guess is that this will place the school well withing Title IX guidelines.

Although I am glad MU is adding this program, I don't expect it to ever be competitive at a national level.

Even with the brand new pool, their facilities are pretty basic.
Have some patience, FFS.

You at least have to make the call to Michael Phelps to coach.

swoopem

So they're gonna hire a coach, get 30 swimmers, and compete by fall? Good for them, but I would think the pool of swimmers is quite empty by now
Bring back FFP!!!

Was swimming just a club sport before?

Yes.  Chick jr was on the team her freshman year.

The Lens

The new Rec Center is beautiful but the locker rooms are way too small.  Probably about 1/4 of the size of the OG Rec Center.  And there's no keys, you have to enter your own code etc. They either are used or someone screwed up the code so it's complete Lord of the Flies in there now.  College kids just leave their stuff on the floor.  On top of that there's maybe 4 shower stalls. Add in no sauna, no steam room and no whirl pool, it's definitely lacking in amenities.

How does this relate to swimming?  Well rumors were that they built a 3rd locker room for a varsity swim team and that might take some overflow from Gen Pop.  I guess that idea is dead now.

Pool is great tho.  Lots of windows so a much more pleasant swimming experience than the Rec Plex.  And it has bleachers for fans --- they definitely have had this on their radar.

muathletics Marquette Athletics has announced the addition of women's swimming as its 17th varsity program, with competition beginning as early as 2025-26. The program will compete in the recently renovated Wellness + Helfaer Recreation facility and the search for its first head coach will begin immediately
