Quote from: MU82 on April 09, 2026, 06:45:29 PMGotta admit ... if Byrd's a player we were really targeting, I'm a little disappointed to see him end up at another BE school - especially one that isn't UConn, StJ or Creighton.

Providence lost key players to the portal......Oswin, Vaaks, Jones.....so they had more money to throw at Byrd.......lots of schools with better programs were reportedly pursuing him.....PC must have made him an offer he couldn't refuse............the real question is will the money be well spent? what kind of team can they put around him?

If a guy doesn't end up here I really don't care where he goes........but it could be argued that the Big East needs good players in the conference on teams that weren't good last season.

Quote from: tower912 on April 09, 2026, 04:01:37 PMI am going off of that video MU posted.  If they were leaving, they wouldn't be working out with the team.  Pretty simple.

Correct

Quote from: onepost on April 09, 2026, 04:19:24 PMI don't think it's all that uncommon to see players who will eventually leave still in practices until decisions are finalized. When I was a student manager for 5 minutes it was well known Jamail Jones (shoutout JJJJJ) was leaving and he still practiced with the team, Sandy Cohen and Steve Taylor later with Wojo, etc. Hell, when Shaka first got the job he was in Instagram videos with DJ "THE HUMAN HIGHLIGHT" Carton and DJ left like a week later.

It's up to Shaka to build his roster. He did a very poor job of that this year. If he believes in Hamilton, so be it. Miss the tournament again next season for whatever reason, however, then he shouldn't be back for the 2027-2028 season. To be honest, I've only seen a fraction of the players in the portal actually play a game so I can only judge on the results.

Quote from: K1 Lover on April 09, 2026, 06:53:39 PMWhy those schools specifically?

Sucks we couldn't get him, but at least he's in the Big East. I'd definitely prefer he land here rather than the SEC.

I figured those schools are the BE's biggest spenders. Maybe along with Nova?

It doesn't bother me that he's in the Big East; it wouldn't have bothered me if he went to the SEC. If he's not MU-bound, to heck with him!

Reasonable point, and good question.

I saw Byrd play 3 times after I heard MU might want him. His shooting form is atrocious - I can see why he's had a lousy 3-point percentage. And while he's a good help defender, he gambled for steals too often and he got beat off the dribble a lot, too. But I think he also was playing through injuries, so maybe I didn't see him at his best.

Providence just added Dink Pate who has played 3 full G League seasons. That's a big-time add for the Friars.

You're entitled to your opinion, but realistically speaking, Shaka would not be fired were that to happen. While his seat would definitely start to get quite warm, I have no doubt he'd be given one final chance to turn things around.

And even if you could fire him next season, would you really want to risk losing Nigel James Jr too? (*i.e., if we just barely miss the tournament, but NJ and the team are clearly improving and continuing to show rising potential)

*Edit for clarification

This season was an epic fail. Miss the tournament again and he should be gone. The tools are available for a quick turnaround. There's really no excuse.

It's not that black and white.

Even under the updated rules i think he would be eligible for 3 years.

IMO, it is. After a season like this last one, it is pretty black and white.

It's not. Another season like this past one, sure.

If they're on the bubble and miss or if the team suffers any significant injuries he's back.

Lots of Amari Evans smoke (much in the form of twitter follows which is basically all we can externally go on with our staff's refusal to let info leak). Was at Tennessee last season, 95th percentile defender, would be an awesome pickup IMO.

Yeah that would be a great addition. A defensive minded wing? And played a year under Rick Barnes? Yes please.

Hopefully him, Nigel, and Royce would be shooting 3s nonstop in the offseason.

I find it amusing that a coach can firmly make the NCAA tournament in each of his first four years at a program (with a record of 3-4), but miss it once due to a bad season, and fans will immediately turn to saying that coach should be fired if he misses the tournament a second year in a row.

Would be a big time get indeed.  Hope both sides find value in one another.

22% from three and 57% from free throw line in his only season at TN. Talking Tre Norman numbers here.

I think you are right, but NJ will have no impact on MU's decision.

Undersized freshman wing whose calling card is defense. I don't hate it but seems more like one for the future than next season. Think this would be a solid third portal signing, with two more immediate impact pieces coming in .

Would absolutely love this add.  Big wing who can really guard.  The shooting percentages are ugly, but on a low sample.  The form looks very solid so I think there's a lot of room to improve there.

Top 50 recruit, well coached by Rick Barnes.  Yes please.
