Eh, im going to go against the grain here. Every year since Shaka's first year scoop has had the hive mind of a "down year" after losing so and so. Every year they've gotten better.

Quote from: CountryRoads on December 18, 2024, 10:08:24 PMCrowd just seemed flat as ever. I guess I'll just be happy with the win against a team that's lost a crooked number of buy games. Time to go win at X.

Crowd was also flat because the game was pretty meh in the first half.

If jop wasn't on this team, this year, the team would be better on the court

That's kinda ridiculous.

Screen did his damage in the first half with Ben on The bench.  Screen was invisible with Ben on him.  Telfort and Clark-Mcaffery threw in some prayers with Ben in good position.  I cannot think of a time he was out of position.
He was subbed out late when Butler went small and Butler immediately cut the lead to 6.   Gold returned, stabilized.

Except at Dayton, we don't talk about that one.

Again, Dayton did to MU what MU did to Butler.   The adjustment was that MU learned and embraced a grind it out mentality.

Shaka-coached teams don't learn or embrace lessons.

I will propose 3 truths about Jop:
1.  He's playing because he's earned the minutes
2.  Due to his defense and rebuilding he's consistently better than the other available options
3.  He's the weakest link among the starters.

Very nice catch and shoot player on offense.  Should not be doing anything else.

I have no idea what #3 even means.

Anyway, David Joplin is second on the team in scoring and first in rebounds. And don't look at the advanced stats if you wand DO or ZL to replace him right now. They are both turnover machines compared to Joplin.

He's not an all star. But he definitely has value. But I do hope ZL or DO, or even Ian Militec, will be better as juniors or seniors. None of them are there now.

There were times last night that I noticed that Ben blocked out and kept his man away from the board, allowing one of our guards to get the rebound. It's a team sport.
He is mobile enough to be able to switch on a pick and contest the three point shot. His teammates usually do a pretty good job helping out and preventing a quicker player from driving on him after the switch. KenPom has or defense rated as 19th best in all of division 1. I don't think we would be that high if Ben's defense was as bad as some scoopers say here.

Hot take:  I'd like to advocate for Stevie to take a couple more threes a game.

Ben's defense is worse when he gets isolated up top. Otherwise he is generally pretty good as you say.

Ben's defense is good, anyone that only looks at rebounds doesn't pay attention. One of the many times I wish that good box outs was a trackable stat.

Jop is who he is. We all know he's capable of going off, we all know he's capable of going cold.  You have to take the good with the bad.  Suggesting that it'll be addition by subtraction when he graduates is incorrect.
Scoop motto:
Quote from: ATL MU Warrior on February 06, 2025, 06:04:29 PMthe stats bear that out, but

I think the biggest issue he has is that he has the yips from three.

Watch his shot last night vs the game at DePaul when he hit 8 threes, or the BE tournament two years ago. Clean catch, nice efficient release. Now everything is slowed down, and sometimes with a slight hitch when he lets it go.

FT stroke is much tighter and he made most if not all last night.

Quote from: tower912 on December 18, 2024, 10:05:08 PM1. Marquette did to Butler all game what Dayton did to MU in the first half.  Dominated the O boards and stayed afloat via second chance points.
2. Kam Jones, even on an off night, pretty darn good.
3. Telfort was pulling contested shots out of his dentist in the first half.
4. Pierre Brooks is a body type MU struggles to match up with.
5. I do not mind the threes MU took.  In the offense, none forced.
6.  Trying to recall the last time MU dominated the O boards like they did tonight.
7. Get used to it.  Kam goes out, the opponent goes zone.
8. All of those o boards and putbacks and Butler almost never fouled MU?
9.  Ben focuses on guarding Screen.  Screen becomes invisible.
10.  Tre and Zaide playing more minutes.
11.  Beat Xavier, take 10 days off.

the defender needs to be in a position to actually defend the player shooting to foul.

Quote from: MuggsyB on December 18, 2024, 11:41:33 PMTonight was unusual in how we completely dominated to offensive glass.  We have to find a way to be more accurate on wide open threes.

My preference would be to do what Shaka did last year after the home game against Butler: more driving to the rim, points in the paint, and fewer threes. If we shoot like that against X we lose.

If MU shoots 6-31 against most teams, they lose.

I also noticed Ben keeping opponents from challenging a rebound by a teammate. One time Ben stretched his arms out wide, allowing I (think) Stevie to get the rebound uncontested in the corner. It was basically an assist on a rebound.

Eh. Marquette stretched out its lead just after the half. It began to fall apart when Kam picked up a dumb foul.
