Another abject failure by the Marquette athletic department.  Between this, Dayton, Flo and hot dogs, it's time to wonder if Marquette basketball should consider dropping to D-III

He's going to get his dream job at Marquette when Shaka goes to UVA at the end of this season. If we hired him the first time around, we would have the back-to-back nattys that UCONN got instead.

Quote from: jesmu84 on December 18, 2024, 10:49:17 PMJop's progression with defense and rebounding has been awesome to watch.

His lack of progression with offensive decision making, dribbling, driving and hitting consistently from anywhere on the court hasn't been awesome to watch.

And that's especially harmful this year when we need a consistent 2nd/3rd scorer this season.

I actually disagree with the statement that he has not progressed on offense. He didn't have any TOs last night and he has passed the ball better. In addition, it is clear that Shaka is encouraging Jop to take it to the hoop. Take away the three point attempts last night and Jop was 3 for 9 from the floor for 12 points (including 6-6 from the FT line). That seems pretty efficient. What has hurt Joplin and MU is the inconsistency from 3 and his willingness at times to take the quick one. Jop will always be streaky from 3. IMO it is because his shot form has too much going on, but that is not going to change at this point. In general, however, it is pretty clear that Shaka is trying to develop Jop into a more consistent scorer by getting Jop inside and getting him to the line.

He jumps off of one foot and is often off balanced and out of control when he drives.  He also doesn't generally see the floor when help comes.  He needs to slow down a tick, plant with two feet, and score the ball or move it. He's absolutely capable of doing both.  Last night he could have easily been called for a couple of traveling violations.  It's about focus and making better decisions.  We've seen Jop play his A game and provide a major scoring punch.  It's time for him to step it up and hoop with confidence.

Jop's problem is that he is not terribly athletic.

Lol, exactly. If Jop could drop step quicker or go up faster, he would.

I don't disagree. It would be nice to see Jop do a jump stop. That said, I saw more times where I thought Jop was fouled and didn't get the call than I saw uncalled travels.

Jop is limited athletically, so he needs to learn to use his strength and intelligence. Working inside seems new to him. His footwork on post-ups has improved and he does use the pump fake more effectively than in the past. He still struggles to finish against contact. IMO, he has progressed offensively as well as defensively. Like any player, he doesn't look too good when he launches and misses 3s at a high rate.

Personally, I'd like to see more Ross and Mitchell on offense and a little less Jop but Shaka knows what he's doing. After watching seven years of poor coaching under Wojo, Shaka just about walks on water in my book.

Complaining that he "could have been called for travels" in a game where he has zero turnovers is just complaining for complaining's sake. Very Willie thing to do.

I like Jop - he's got a great motor and really loves the game - play with as much passion as anyone on the team.

I don't love when he puts it on the floor, but if he could finish through contact it would up his player rating by 37.1%. He's a strong dude, but when he gets bumped most of the time he just wildy throws it up like he has no idea where the hoop is - one of his drives last night I think he jammed the ball into the underside of the rim - he should grab a few more pointers from Kam and Stevie - both of whom do a much better job finishing through contact despite being much smaller.

Hers the thing - we played so well (while Dayton played so poorly) in the first half that there was virtually nothing to adjust. Unfortunately, as backwards as it sounds, getting exactly what we wanted ended up being a disadvantage for us.

I am a Jop fan. I think the lunch pail stuff he does goes unappreciated. And as someone upthread noted, he seems to get fouled inside but not called. Maybe because he's bigger stronger?

But I did find this funny on the internet.

I agree with this.  Jop is better in all areas of the game including taking the ball to the basket and backing down defenders.  He's still not real good at it, but he is much, much better than he was a few years ago.

Jop, leading the team in rebounds and blocks, after an off night where he goes for 15-6....
Never mind.  I will just have to learn to accept Joplin Derangement Syndrome, knowing that a season from now, when Owens and Parham are going through sophomore year growing pains, Joplin will be missed and finally appreciated.

I love games like last night.

They couldn't shoot and gave up 51% and 41% on 2s and 3s.

Still won.

To some here, Jop is the 2024 version of Derrick.

Personally, I have loved watching Jop grow each year. That is the joy of college basketball - especially with a coach like Shaka who keeps guys in the program.

Hey, that is a really good comparison. He leaves us wanting more.

He can be great one game and then it disappears for a couple games only to reappear again.

The difference, of course is that Jamil made it to the NBA (albeit for a short time), and Jop won't.

Here's the thing on Jop, I think he is pretty much getting everything he can out of his talent. He's limited athletically, usually undersized compared to the guys guarding him and he is a not a natural shooter. His improvements defensively have pleasantly surprised me given this.

MU committed two turnovers.  Stevie's charge and Kam's weird, bad pass to a cutting Stevie.  None in the second half.  2.  Turnovers.
