Quote from: Jockey on December 19, 2024, 01:43:24 PMHey, that is a really good comparison. He leaves us wanting more.

He can be great one game and then it disappears for a couple games only to reappear again.

The difference, of course is that Jamil made it to the NBA (albeit for a short time), and Jop won't.

Jamil made it to the NBA because there was more to get out of his talent. That's why Jop will not.

Yes, both were streaky for MU, but I think for different reasons.

Quote from: Jockey on December 19, 2024, 01:27:48 PMTo some here, Jop is the 2024 version of Derrick.

Personally, I have loved watching Jop grow each year. That is the joy of college basketball - especially with a coach like Shaka who keeps guys in the program.

David Joplin is 100x the player Derrick Wilson was, and if not for an absolute idiot of a head coach. Derrick Wilson would have played 10 minutes per game as a senior. I mean did ANYONE miss Derrick Wilson (as a player) after he graduated?  There's a least a chance we will miss Jop, though I suspect Royce will play so well next year, it's unlikely.

I was looking for a box score from last night and accidentally clicked on the box score from last January when Butler won.  TKo went 1-13 in 32 minutes.  Clearly, the season was over at that point.  And nobody going 1-13 deserves to be an all American.

Quote from: RJax55 on December 19, 2024, 01:44:36 PMHere's the thing on Jop, I think he is pretty much getting everything he can out of his talent. He's limited athletically, usually undersized compared to the guys guarding him and he is a not a natural shooter. His improvements defensively have pleasantly surprised me given this.

I meant that Scoop treat Joplin now like we treated Jamil back then.

A different idiot head coach also played Derrick 31 mpg his junior year and started him 30 times that year.

You're right. Wojo is at least as good of coach as Buzz, that's why Wojo had a plethora of offers after being fired from MU.  As everyone knows that's being objectively honest, Buzz did a horse crap job coaching MU his last season. That aside, even if John Dawson were a worse option than Derrick (which as you know I don't think was the case), Buzz didn't have the option of Duane Wilson or Matt Carlino to play PG.

Go take a look at Derrick's career stats on KenPom. Anyone who suggests a player like that was under appreciated or would be missed is simply lying to themselves.

So I'm pretty neutral on Jop. Happy when he's playing well, my wife and I fist bump and say "jop drop!" When he's hitting threes but also I was cursing his name last year vs NC ST.

What I'm most curious about is what did Shaka see in him at Texas? I mean Jops a decent player and in certain systems he'd be fantastic but specifically how Shaka played at Texas I just don't get how Shaka thought he'd be incorporated unless he misinterpreted how much untapped athletic upside there was?

Carlino played 33 mpg that year.  Duane averaged 28 mpg that year.  Duane probably could've added a few minutes, but those are close to max minutes for college guys.

Nothing like a day after win in December for Ners to jump back a decade to what got him banned. You know what, let's just play all the hits, what did Wojo's inherited cupboard look like? Maybe we can get MUFINY to chime in.

I know. Not that either should be treated that way, but I understand the frustration more with Jamil. He was a bit of mystery as I always thought he had more to give.

I don't really understand that with Jop. With Scoopers thinking he has all this untapped potential.

I don't think I've ever seen a Marquette team attempt 25+ more shots than its opponent, and I'm not sure I've ever seen it in any basketball game.

This intrigued me.  I looked back the past 10 full seasons plus this year so far... so all of Wojo and Shaka.  340 total games.  The closest discrepancy in attempts was 20 in those games. 28 is a huge outlier.  MU only attempted as many or more field goals 3 times in that period... all were 2OT games.

Remember the "should I impose a self ban?" Poll that was so lopsided he shut it down and said it was never finished so he wasn't going to follow through? Or the weird sucking up to John Dawson's Uncle and cousin on here?

Weird era of scoop.

It is interesting that neither Marquette (pre-Shaka) nor Wisconsin offered him. I think he was considered a lower level D1 player with offers from Horizon League-like teams up through his junior year, but then he had a really good summer prior to his senior year when he got offers from Texas, Iowa State, Butler, etc.

At the time, Wojo had Justin, Oso and Dawson and freshman, and was zeroing in on Aidoo in the same class (who eventually committed) so maybe he didn't think he needed any additional front court players.

To be fair, Ners plays the hits occasionally, but by and large is pretty level-headed and normal these days.

Nothing like the Projo and Derrick Wilson fan club to bring up the dark days of MUSoop and Hoops, by comparing David Joplin and Derrick Wilson.

That aside, I have zero shame for being banned from this board multiple times for criticizing  Wojo and his awful coaching nonstop for 6.5 years.  Arguing with Scoopers who suggested and thought he'd be good "once he got all his own guys,"was no doubt a waste of time and a fools errand, because you just can't debate stupidity.

Was crystal clear 10 games into Wojo's career at MU that he was an awful coach. Yet we had Scoopers still thinking the guy had potential 5 years into his time at MU. Sorry you were one of those fools.

Huh? Are you mistaking me for someone else? If I recall I believe I said he was incrementally improving until his last year. I only argued posters who were so pessimistic it made the board unreadable and they were actively rooting for MU to lose so they could get rid of the guy. I stand by those takes. He was not the worst coach in history (see Kyle Neptune), and I'll always root for MU to be successful.
