This was brought up in the 2005 fiasco, but dismissed immediately. The Jesuits thought it was disrespectful to have a Saint used as a mascot.

Too bad Providence didn't have a similar line of thinking.

Not a specific saint. Just a generic friar.

Could have done essentially the same thing without using Joan of Arc by using the imagery of a "warrior" of the time as the mascot. I've always thought this could have been a really cool compromise. Even if they didn't want to make Joan of Arc the official mascot.
Never wrestle with a pig.  You both get dirty, and the pig likes it.

Our present mascot is offensive to Golden Eagles. We should have the real thing, like Butler's Bulldog.

Or Georgetown's bulldog. Or Georgia's. Or Yale's. Or Drake's. Or Bryant's. Or...

First Warrior was the most respectful iteration of the Warrior, however, the nickname/mascot clearly could not be separated by the more offensive iterations, which is obvious from the fact that they are still continually posted on this board.
...yet Marquette hasn't modified the school seal...a Native American in a canoe. Is this hypocritical of MU? (I'm with my buddy Rick. Should have stayed with the logo I posted prior, kept Warriors.) Oh well, at this point GEagles has been the nickname pushing 30 yrs. Crazy it's been that long.

They just updated the seal a couple years ago. Now it shows wild rice instead of Fr. Marquette in a canoe.

I remember when the seal change was the end of the world.

Too young to vote at the time, but I've liked the idea pitched here about switching to St. Joan of Arc as the mascot. Probably too processive for the mid-90s but with the St. Joan of Arc chapel on campus and Marquette being the first Catholic University to admit women, I think it would have been fitting to have the first female primary mascot in D1.

I mean, that's not an unreasonable take. I figured that even if you could get the mid-90s fanbase to accept a female mascot, having a saint as your mascot would probably be frowned upon by they guys in the big pointy hats

The answer was always too just drop the nickname all together. Virtually all the branding & fan engagement is based around "We Are Marquette" not any mascot. And if you drop the mascot, fans can use whatever they like.

That was the case after the Gold debacle probably until about the end of the Buzz era, but the Eagle is making a comeback. Naming the mascot Iggy, creating new cartoon versions of him, the logo popping up more. It seems like they are finally embracing it a bit. I think it would be a great time for a true Eagle logo refresh.
