The pictures I have seen reminded me of southern China 10+ years ago. It is funny because I never paid much attention during the work week but whenever I got back to the hotel on Friday late afternoon, I always noticed the reddish brown sky. Even though we work on Saturdays in China, that Friday afternoon sky always reminded me to try and enjoy the weekend because I survived another work week.

Not sure when you started traveling to China, but over the past 10+ years the air improved greatly, especially in industrial areas. It was insane 20 years ago and seeing the sun was a rare treat in the 1990's and the 2000's. The view on NYC looks very similar.

I can remember seeing the NYC skyline perhaps not this bad but bad enough in the mid to late 60s approaching Newark airport during Christmas and Summer breaks. Only the Indian Point 1 Nuclear power plant was operational in the 60s so reliance on High sulfur coal plants were the norm. The plants 2 and 3 did not go online until the mid 70s. The skyline would get smog from time to time but the orange haze from the sulfur was completely gone as some of the coal plants were replaced with natural gas. Today it is all natural gas as Indian Point was shut down in 2021.
