I've been there a few times in the past couple of years, it's great. Veg menu is as good as the non-vegetarian. Very nice wine pairing, and the gin cart is a nice touch. It's still too inexpensive. I have nothing bad to say about Indienne, it's terrific

Completely loved it, agreed a bit underpriced for what I'd have paid. They didn't bring out the gin cart  :'(

I'm glad you had a nice time. I have a few Indian friends who dragged me there a while ago saying that it's the closest thing to the flavors of their respective mom's kitchens. High praise, to be sure.

Fellow Scoopers, I'm looking for an amazing place within 1 hour of Brookfield for an amazing birthday dinner with my wife.  She likes steakhouses and hates anything spicy.  Please help!

Went to Monteverde last night. Wine list is a bit over priced. Pasta and arancini was out of this world. Wouldn't get the steak again personally. Cooked perfect but still.

Panna Cotta was a cool concept and fun mix of flavors but still would take osteria langhe's.

Monteverde still hits. Agree on the steak though, but that's how I feel about a lot of places.
Assume what I say should be in teal if it doesn't pass the smell test for you.

I love the vibe of a steakhouse but every time I pay that type of money for a decent steak, appetizer, a side, bottle of wine I end up asking myself "why? I could've paid this to go to Oriole or Ever or..." different strokes for different folks.

Trouble with steak is I can make it at home really close to restaurant quality with minimal effort.

Agreed. I almost never eat steak at restaurants. It's just so damn expensive and we can make a very good steak at home. If I'm going to pay a lot for a good dinner, I want to see a chef's skill really shine through.

I really liked the drink I had there and the dessert was one of the best things I ever tasted.  But i have to agree,  the entree was disappointing for the price.

Thanks all for the advice.  We haven't booked yet, and FWIW, we like steakhouses because the good ones have great service, great salads, nice wine selection and great desserts.  I think the last time I actually ordered a steak was more than 10 years ago.  We enjoy the fine dining experience... usually we have an appetizer or two, a salad, and often order some sides that you can only get at a good steak house like creamed spinach.  They probably think we're cheap, but we stopped caring what other people think a long time ago.

curious what people think, in todays age is a steakhouse fine dining?

Glad I wasn't alone on Lupi. I was underwhelmed by my visit, but it gets such high praise that I put it on the list because maybe I was there on an off night.

My last visit to Amilinda was similar... everything about the meal was just flat. Both entrees needed salt and some sort of acid to wake up the flavors.

I'm not an avid steakhouse aficionado, so I'm not coming from a biased perspective, but I'm not a hater either.  That being said, I see 2 different genres where I think it is/can be.

1) The classic, old school joints.  Been around forever, have the ambience, have the classic service and presentation, really kind of throwback spots.  To many, that was big time fine dining and they carry on that sort of service and panache.

2) The ambitious modern steakhouses.  These are places that have their highly skilled in house butcher, do all variety of aging and curing, they are providing cuts and meat prep that the regular joe isn't doing at home.  Naturally you're going to pay a premium for the kind of steaks that make it "fine dining" but you should know that going in.  The people that go there cause its renowned but get the lower priced generic strip or ribeye are just wildly overpaying for run of the mill meat.

I will say, and I'm not pointing fingers at anyone here, but I know plenty of people in my friend/family circle who will say stuff like "why would I go to a steakhouse, I do it just as good/better myself" and 80-90% of them are just grilling a steak on their grill out back.  Thats absolutely tasty and I'm not going to sneer at it, but that's not how a steak is being cooked in any good steakhouse and it absolutely tastes different.

You can get high quality and aged beef at good butcher shops, and cooking them is extremely easy.

I think yes for me, because when I ever go to a steak house, I feel like I have to "dress up" better than my usual T-shirt and casual pants. I went to two such places in Nashville recently (my BIL treated us to a couple of his spots) one in which I had to wear a jacket but could wear dark jeans, and the other had no code, was a throwback vibe with a ridiculously loud Sinatra impersonator, and I wore dark jeans and a black short sleeved button front shirt. Many people were dressed better than I was. So, for me, yeah, I'd say it's fine dining. However, saying that, I am super casual, so maybe my idea of fine dining or not is skewed.

Since we're on steakhouses (which I avoid), may I suggest Warlord in Chicago. Better than any steakhouse for sure.

I snapped a pic of their meat case on the way out last time.
