I have enjoyed steakhouses for all my 61y on this planet and still feel like I am going someplace special whenever I hit a steakhouse. A steakhouse always makes me feel like it is a special night out.

Probably, their culture was cancer. Nobody seemed happy and the chef was actively being a dick. Amazing meal though.

Sounds like you may have ended up at Jimmy Kelly's on Louise Street. Old mansion that's an elegant southern dining establishment.

Also where Nashville's Catholic community hangs out.

A second good one is the Southern Steak and Oyster House downtown. Grew up with the owner!

You have apparently never visited a steakhouse in Wisconsin.  I have seen guys walk into one after a day of deer hunting still wearing their camo and blaze orange.
Have some patience, FFS.

In fairness it was their fanciest camo and Orange

OK, FWIW, based on the above recommendation we tried Carbon but they were full on the magical day so we chose Rare. Place looks cool - sort of a modern version of the "old school" steakhouse interior -  nice wine list but not huge/long, excellent food, meh service.  In fact the service was friendly but not competent.  (didn't know the wine list, didn't offer specials, didn't serve wine properly.)

Nevertheless, I'd go back for the food... and probably just sit at the bar!

Anyone try Spicy Taco in West Allis?

Small place, kinda funky.  Full bar and co-located with a gas station on Greenfield.

Super good salsa and fresh homemade chips.  All sauces/salsa are scratch made. Have had tacos and the quesadillas.

Probably seats 15-20 people.

I think Rare is a Tuesday-Thursday place. It's an expense account spot for NM / Baird / Foley types.  No one in MKE chooses that location on the weekend.

If you're looking for a downtown steak, you're not going to do better than Mo's.  It's Milwaukee's best.

El Che Steakhouse in the West Loop. Chef/owner John Mannion was a year behind me at Marquette. Also owns Brasero in Chicago.

Was in Chicago last weekend for my nephew's birthday. We hit up El Che. They rolled out the red carpet for us. Top notch food from start to finish.

Ive heard great stuff about El Che.  We actually had a reservation in summer 2022 then our friends had a family illness so we cancelled our weekend trip down to Chicago and then moved to Florida 2 months later so we never got back.  Bummer.

Speaking of South American inspired steakhouses west of the highway, anyone been to Folklore recently?  I remember going there like 10-12 years ago.  It was fantastic and, at the time, shockingly inexpensive.  Especially for fantastic quality.

Quote from: 21Jumpstreet on June 12, 2024, 11:52:13 AMLegs, Don Rufino in La Fortuna is great, we loved it from the food to the service. It was recommended to me. Our traveling companions liked Pollo Fortuneno, we couldn't make it that night. Nanku is good. I'll see if I have some notes. There is a great coffee/cafe next to the Mini Market El Mirador overlooking the Arenal Volcano, that I thought was great. The people are so kind. Ate at La Fonda the night we lost to NC State, so it's stricken from my list, but they had really good food and a special area where this delightful woman cooked a spread over open fire. Service there was exceptional, they worked incredibly hard to get the MU game streaming, was cool when another MU family came in and we bonded over cold beer and bad basketball.

Monteverde is so beautiful, wow. Had a delicious breakfast at Stella's out back in the garden. There is a cute coffee trailer near there, too, very sweet woman owns it. We had been hiking all day up to the Continental Divide then down to Santa Elena, and while the Tree House Restaurant is fine, the sangria hit the spot. I like places like Sabor Tico, and we had a large group a couple nights so Don Luis and Mar y Tiera were great.

Enjoy!

Jump- Thanks so much for your recommendations.  Don Ruffino was terrific- loved it and then walking around town.  We did not make it to Monteverde, but high recommendations for Pangas on the beach in Tamarindo!

Bronzeville winery has an amazing brunch. Maybe the best chicken and waffles I've had. Period. Gonna try out dinner there this weekend--been a few years.

Had another wonderful meal at Quintonil a few weeks ago. I can't recommend them enough. Great food, great staff, wonderful and fun atmosphere. It's in my top 5 restaurants along with noma, oriole, gagan, and I can't think of a 4th that's up there with them. Most other restaurants with excellent food are too serious for me, but those ones I just listed are a real joy to share a meal at.

Do they serve both US and Argentine beef. I also heard that Canadian beef from Alberta is very good as well. I imagine which is best is a matter of opinion and taste.

Personally not a fan of Calderon Club.

Il-Mito and Onesto are the two best I have had. I've consistently been told that Ca'Lucchenzo is the best but haven't had a chance to try it.

Safina. Just ate there Friday, outstanding food, wine, service, atmosphere. I also love Ca'Lucchenzo in Tosa.

OK, Milwaukee Scoopers ...

Buddies and I will be in for the UConn game and are staying in the Brady St area. Would love suggestions for a Friday fish fry, and also for a couple of fun bars to hang at. We'd rather leave the car parked at our Airbnb and just walk to everything.

Thanks!

Calderone is solid, but Ca Lucchenzo is a different level. I've responded to TAMU's love of Il Mito before, but I'd pass on that place.
