This is a case of pandering to the audience.  A large portion of people watching that game are fans of one of those schools.  He would probably say the same thing if he was doing today's MU-X game.  Although he went to Providence so he's a bit biased as well.

Yea Dickie sucks and I love pointing out moronic announcer tropes, but he clearly likes Cooley and thinks he's special, for good reason beyond just his Alma mater ties, and so that statement tracks.  Then you toss in McDermott to not appear totally biased and also cause Creighton has had a couple really good transfers lately including Scheierman this year, and add in a bit of clumsy hyperbole and here you are.
