I'm not a big baseball guy but the man was an absolute legend.  Sad news.  Condolences to his family.

The best to ever do it
He and Ernie Harwell are trading stories.

Was a great announcer who made the game come to life .

One of my favorite Vinn Scully moments was after Kirk Gibson hit the dramatic World Series Home Run. Vin was silent while Gibson ran (limped )!around the bases. He let the crowd noise and moment sink in until he said anything. Made you feel like you were there

Feel like there are a lot of these threads this year. Probably just a combination of being more aware of famous people to live in my lifetime than when I was a kid coupled with social media making sure that we're aware of all the deaths, but from a "feels like" perspective this has been a brutal year.

The voice, the narratives he used, never lost his fastball as he aged.

The GOAT.

Growing up in LA, a Mexican kid in the 80s during the Fernandomania era, you couldn't help but be a Dodgers fan.
I have a lot of great memories watching Dodger games on Channel 11, Vin Scully, Don Drysdale and Rick Monday.
But back then they usually only had the road games on TV, it wasn't like today where you could watch all of the games, so I listened to a lot of baseball games on the radio too and no one calls a game like Vin Scully. He was the absolute best, not just at describing the action on the field but also the storytelling, sharing of anecdotes, etc.

A huge loss for baseball, the Dodgers and their fans and of course the Scully family. RIP Vin.

Truly a sad day.

Imagine he's up there with Jack Buck, Ernie Harwell, Bob Prince, Herb Carnell and Halsey Hall, Lindsey Nelson, Harry Kalas and Milo Hamilton talking baseball.

After awhile, one of them looks over and asks Jack Robinson, "Hey Jackie, who was faster, you or Lou Brock?" Mr. Robinson looks at them and says, "are you kidding me? At least I slid when I tried to steal home in the World Series.. and I made it."

Vin and the announcers laugh as Mr. Brock comes over and shakes his head and says, "are you kidding me..."

And the debate rolls on....

Yes, I can remember a young Vin Scully doing play by play for the Yankees in the early to mid 50s. He started braodcasting IIRC with the Dodgers in '56 and/or '57 and then followed them to LA in '58 where they played in the Coliseum until Dodger stadium was completed. Always enjoyed, Red Barber, Mel Allen, Lindsey Nelson and Phil Rizutto here during the golden age of New York baseball, but I agree Vin just was the best.

Ya, Vin Scully was good for his time, but was surrounded by all-stars in LA.  That, plus, all you had was basic cable, AM radio, and newspapers, printed none the less, to compete with.

Now days, broadcasters contend with pod casts, streaming services, satellite TV, satellite radio, not to mention ESPN 1-8, FS, FS1, etc., etc.

Give me a Joe Buck any day over Vin.  Vin was good, but.....

Scully was great, a Hall of Famer. RIP.

But there are a lot of broadcasters with "dulcet tones" who can do baseball play by play skillfully. As far as entertainment is concerned, give me Bob Uecker or Harry Caray in his prime (St Louis, Chicago White Sox).

Back in '63 I can remember Lindsay Nelson doing the Army/Navy game on CBS telling viewers that is not live, this is not live but a replay of the final touchdown. It was the first instant replay ever seen on TV during a live sporting event.

Basic cable was not widespread until the early 80s. You and I can disagree over Joe Buck.

I think Mr. Chili is poking some fun at the posters who insist the athletes from the 80s and earlier couldn't compete with today's athletes.

Vitale had a far greater impact on college basketball as an announcer than Al did as a broadcaster.  Vitale was the broadcast face of the sport for decades.  When he came to town, it was the GAME.

Walton is recency bias

Agreed.  The last decade has been terrible, but he was an absolute phenom for years.

That list is hilarious.  Marty Brennamen over Musberger is a joke.

Just poking fun at both sides of that debate last week.  I actually enjoyed both sides of that debate.

EXCUSE ME!!!!

1) Milo is in the Broadcast Wing of the Baseball Hall of Fame.

2) Milo introduced millions of people in the Southeast to baseball when the Braves poisoned the well in Milwaukee and moved to Atlanta in 1966.

3) Milo was the long-time, well-regarded voice of the Houston Astros.

4) Milo did a great commercial for Delta Air Lines ("Delta is ready when you are...")

I'll admit, Milo got screwed by the Chicago Cubs and showed a lack of class in the way he publicly handled it. But he and Ernie Johnson Sr., were a broadcast staple during southern summers for many years.

YES MILO!!!!

P.S. -- Glad to see Tony Kubek on the list. Guy knew baseball and he's sorely under-rated. As good a color man as I ever heard.

100%. Mediocre (at best) announcer super jealous of the truly talented. My most unfavorite guy to do games on either side of Chicago.
