I'll turn 64 next week and I'll be retiring before the end of the year.  I've been an 8-to-fiver since 1984 and I'm looking forward to doing a lot of whatever I feel like doing.  I'm not worried about having nothing to do; I have tons of hobbies and interests, I'm still in good physical shape, and I am the type of person who is not easily bored. I'll travel more, go to more ballgames, tinker on house projects, try some art projects, get better at cooking, ride my bike, kayak, golf, fish, play softball, sit on the front porch with a cold one, maybe pick up that old guitar I bought 30 years ago, just whatever TF I feel like.

Quote from: pbiflyer on August 11, 2025, 12:37:23 PMI am so sorry retirement has been so bad that you had to go to that many Marlins games. Have you tried something more pleasant, like poking your eyes out?  ;D

I was going to retire this weekend, but I picked the wrong powerball numbers.

The Marlins game?  Going to the dump that is Wrigley or going to a Cardinals game are the torture that he listed.

Quote from: dgies9156 on August 11, 2025, 02:40:28 PMStrange as it may seem, I actually like the Marlins games. I go in the afternoon on getaway day and they've got some interesting young talent. Just not enough of it.

Biggest hassle with Marlin games is Miami traffic headed north on Interstate 95 or west on Florida 826. Miami's transportation system is so bad it makes Atlanta look good. Miami is almost unlivable it is so bad.
Well, Marlins stadium does allow for quiet solitude unless a northeast team is in town.  ;D

The few times I use Brightline is mostly to go to Marlin games. Easy in and out, with the shuttle.
While traffic is bad, you also have the bonus of insane drivers!

Cripes. Not down to Miami, but I was on I-95 from FLL to north of PBI a lot last week... bunch of lunatics out on the road there. I kind of liked it, except for the super-extreme people doing wild multi-lane changes going 90+ and almost hitting other cars.

And those were just the super-extreme 95-year-olds!

In fairness, they may have been late for a pickeball match.

That would be excusable.

I played three times in Florida — up in Port St. Lucie, outdoors. Crazy that there aren't more indoor spots there.

If we could get Brightline to stop on the Treasure Coast, I'd be all-in on riding Brightline.

I live in Vero Beach and it blows by 28 times a day at 80 miles per hour.

It's even worse north of Palm Beach County. Interstate 95 on the Space Coast isn't nick named Launch Complex 39 for nothing!

I know two people who take no salary for helping to run charitable organizations, and they work harder than most employed people do.

These last 15 years, I've done freelance work, coached, officiated and volunteered for several organizations. Hey, it's a "living"!

...and moved to the opposite end of the country to be close to family.

Do you really think they're stupid enough to "reclaim "it? We're gonna have to come up with some Big Bucks to get them to take it. And a whole lot more if they have to take Florida's most famous citizen as part of the deal.

Listen, they just need to grease the wheels behind the scenes and put up a hotel and golf course somewhere in Spain and that should cover it

Florida for Greenland? We could sweeten the pot if needed as there are several more possibilities.

But the Danes aren't that gullible.

What does Florida have that America needs?  Citrus fruits?  Bah.  I'm pretty sure we're going to tell people those things aren't good for you anyday now, so, no loss.

A place where older adults with child brain can pretend they are in a make believe dream  and pay thousands to be humored. Besides the Pickleball facilities there also is Disney world.

Retirement? No way.

SS will end. Medicare will end. PE/crypto will siphon my 401k/IRA. The AI bubble will crash my investment accounts.

Well, for starters, Florida reported 141 million tourists last year. That's from around the world and includes more than Disney. So a lot of you think Florida is pretty cool, since it's hardly an efficient place to vacation.

Second, for those of us who are senior citizens, we enjoy it. We're invested in our communities and, in our specific county, we've improved the graduation rate at our high schools and become actively involved in improving educational opportunities for our young folks.

We retire here because we don't have to dread February any more. And, I got almost every Marquette game on TV on my patio tv.

There's 24 million of us in Florida now. If present trends continue, Florida and Texas eventually will surpass California as the nation's most populated states. We could do a lot of things better -- managing and controlling guns immediately comes to mind -- but overall the state is financially strong, its state services good. Now, if we could get control on those confiscatory insurance premiums -- yeah right....
