Anyone still here who wants to talk about the original topic? I'm thinking about retiring early but still willing to do part time work to help my ensure my non-qualified investments stretch out past 59.5 and also cover healthcare now and after my wife retires in 5 years or so. I'm curious if anyone was in the same boat and what type of part time work you do.
That's called "coast FIRE" if you're looking for online communities about it.

I semi-retired 8 months ago and it's been glorious. I have an s-corp through which I do consulting (accounting) and if the right fit is there, may hop back in fully (LOTS of gas left in the tank), but ideally looking to work 30-80% of the time. Never been happier. At peace. (Health insurance costs are stupid. Relatively speaking, not a huge deal, but annoying).

I retired a couple years ago.

For part-time work, I moderate internet forums.

Once you've been retired a full year, Obamacare is the way to go. Subsidy is based on previous year's income. You'll pay under $100/mo. for full coverage. Find a plan in the $800-$1000 range on the website and the subsidy covers the vast majority.

Subsidy actually has been based on one's expected income for the year one is on the ACA. If the income ends up being less, there will be a refund at tax time; if it ends up being more, there will be a penalty.

Lots will be changing for 2026 and beyond, though, due to new laws. Including the costs to consumers, which will be higher. In many cases much higher.

Yeah, I think you're right. Last time I helped someone get set up, they retired in August so their income was fairly high for that year and with the subsidy, the cost was around $350 a month. The next year, the cost was less than $60 a month.

Similar situation here.

I make great money sticking with my area of expertise and winding down my hours to just a few a week. That's compared to taking a job at a place like Starbucks for the health insurance for a very low hourly wage. I'd rather keep my resume current in case the economic crap hits the fan and my investments rapidly approach zero.

Yep, I knew several people who do that and then work for cash or trade so they can keep their income down.

Disagree. Becoming the ownership class should be the unachievable goal of all workers.

No idea for me. My dad retired at 65 (39 years as a physician) and was back working at the Urgent Care clinic as soon as he was allowed. It was only his body breaking down from previous cancer treatment that led him to fully retire. Someone like him can only stay inactive for so long, and he instilled that in me.

I mean, what is "retirement"?

I know two people who take no salary for helping to run charitable organizations, and they work harder than most employed people do.

These last 15 years, I've done freelance work, coached, officiated and volunteered for several organizations. Hey, it's a "living"!

Update on some older posts:

I retired March 15, 2025. I admit I occasionally miss my job, especially since I have been back in Chicago. But overall, it has gone as expected. The best part about retirement has been the lack of stress in my life. I've come to really enjoy retirement.

Since I retired, I've been to three Marlins games, two Rays games, a Cardinal game in St. Louis and a Cub game here in Chicago (my wife and I spend our summers in a condo in Lakeview East). I have tickets for two more Cub games next week and probably will go a couple more times beyond that.

I have re-picked up cycling and am working on my health. Goal: weigh what I did when I was married. We've also been to Las Vegas (twice), Utah and plan to go to Upstate New York and New Hampshire for the fall.

All in all, I'm not complaining in the least!

I am so sorry retirement has been so bad that you had to go to that many Marlins games. Have you tried something more pleasant, like poking your eyes out?  ;D

I was going to retire this weekend, but I picked the wrong powerball numbers.

Strange as it may seem, I actually like the Marlins games. I go in the afternoon on getaway day and they've got some interesting young talent. Just not enough of it.

Biggest hassle with Marlin games is Miami traffic headed north on Interstate 95 or west on Florida 826. Miami's transportation system is so bad it makes Atlanta look good. Miami is almost unlivable it is so bad.
