Quote from: dgies9156 on August 13, 2025, 01:39:27 PMWell, for starters, Florida reported 141 million tourists last year. That's from around the world and includes more than Disney. So a lot of you think Florida is pretty cool, since it's hardly an efficient place to vacation.

Second, for those of us who are senior citizens, we enjoy it. We're invested in our communities and, in our specific county, we've improved the graduation rate at our high schools and become actively involved in improving educational opportunities for our young folks.

We retire here because we don't have to dread February any more. And, I got almost every Marquette game on TV on my patio tv.

There's 24 million of us in Florida now. If present trends continue, Florida and Texas eventually will surpass California as the nation's most populated states. We could do a lot of things better -- managing and controlling guns immediately comes to mind -- but overall the state is financially strong, its state services good. Now, if we could get control on those confiscatory insurance premiums -- yeah right....

Americans, by and large, are idiots.  Probably another reason why the Spanish won't take it back.  Who wants to deal with that many Americans?

I can't afford Florida.  According to my wife, it would me half of everything to move there.

You're allowed to love Florida. For now, it's a free country. However ...

Florida is about as likely to fall into the sea as it is to surpass  California in population in any of our lifetimes.

Texas might be as big as California by 2050. There is no chance that Florida will be.

I turned 64 and retired 12/31/2024.

We had saved as much as possible living probably more frugally than was necessary. Every bonus/raise went into savings etc.

At 62 I decided to consult a professional who advised that we had saved well enough that I could retire at 64. As it turned out, the company I worked @ 40 years had more costly insurance than the marketplace because only 3 employees took it.

I don't miss: alarm clocks, rush hour, wearing readers another 40 hrs/week, the almost 10,000 hours (400 days) just commuting 1 hr/day.

Don't you miss the heavily-discounted Big Macs and fries?

The 3PL I worked at didn't serve fries for your shake.

It took a month until my sleep patterns normalized.   About the same time, I realized that 80-90% of the back, hip, and shoulder pain I accepted as my normal was gone.   The cliche for us was always that for 5 years, a firefighter retiree looks younger than he did during his last few years on the department.  I don't know if I look younger, but I sure hurt less.

While I certainly didn't have as stressful, difficult, or life dependent job as you did, I did own my own business/es and for me that had a fair amount of stress. Six months after I sold my primary business (a restaurant), I could actually feel my body finally release two decades of stress. It was absolutely fascinating to experience, I knew I had a fair amount, but, when I was in it, I certainly didn't quite get what it was doing to me.

Now that my wife and I are both retired, my stresses involved are should I wear shoes today, are we stopping for mid-afternoon espresso martinis, you know, the tough decisions.

I completely relate the body de-stressing and the revelation of how stressed you actually were.   Congratulations on enjoying yourself.
