You should have tsmith manage your portfolio.   He's never been wrong.

And I wish you luck in retiring in 5-8 years, not 10.

Yep him and Lenny Dykstra. Peas in an investing pod.

Alright, it's 420 and I'm feeling verbose.

The first time I saw Wright coach, it was in 2002 vs MU. Coaches v cancer game.  Wife and I were staying in Algoma on our one and only trip to Door County.  Went to a local townie bar in Algoma, $2 bottles, good food.

MU won handily.  But you could tell that Wright had "it".  Whether it was his style, coolness under pressure, or whatever,  I came away impressed.

I've been a Villanova is my 2nd favorite team for 20 years.  Cheers to Jay Wright.

It is 4/20. It my late brother in laws bday and he enjoyed sharing his bday on 4/20 a great deal. He was one of my all time favorite people and he would be celebrating his 45th today. I am celebrating his life and our friendship at the moment.

Crazy.  Health issue?

Nope.  He's done it for 35 years and he's probably tired of the year round grind.  He's accomplished more than just about any coach in college history and with nary a peep about anything outside the lines at any point of his Hall of Fame career.  In my opinion, the best coach in today's game just retired.

With 20/20 hindsight, most of us here who are old enough to remember Al say, "How cool that he retired on top, in his late-40s, on his own terms, with decades ahead of him for a second act that didn't involve coaching again."

I'm betting Jay Wright is today's version of this. He's rich, he's been coaching for a bazillion years, he's ready for the next chapter ... and it doesn't include coaching some desperate NBA team 3 years from now.

I'll miss having such a classy, talented coach in the Big East.

And no, TAMU ... you and I agree on a LOT ... but this isn't a disaster for college basketball, the Big East or anything else. Guys retire all the time.

Al burned pretty hot, so his retirement made a lot of sense.  No way he survived another decade coaching.  I think it says a lot about Al and Jay to leave sooner than later

Like Al, Jay Wright impresses me as a curious, self aware guy. I hope, like Al, he’s ready for the next chapter life will bring. But even if he’s just taking a break to recharge the batteries I wish him nothing but the best.

Well stated - Wright is first class all the way and will be greatly missed in the Big East.

Correction Coach Wright

The trick of life is getting on that stage and reaching the top.

Shocking, indeed. But congrats to Jay, who, even if you didn't think he is the best coach in the game today (you'd be wrong) is unquestionably the most respected.

From a selfish perspective, though, I'm kind of jacked that the Big East just went up for grabs.
If I were Shaka, I'd channel some Herb Brooks: "They just pulled the best goalie in the world, boys."

Now this is a disaster for college hoops and I think NIL may be the culprit. I've heard rumors that Wright was the most outspoken coach against NIL in the Big East.  May not be interested in playing that game

Could not agree more. Also, while this has most likely been in the works for awhile, it’s a bit ironic that the decision comes after Nova was eliminated by a special-kind-of-corrupt coach and program. It’s almost like Jay is sticking it to the NCAA for their delayed action/inaction re the schools involved in the FBI probe.

Self is corrupt as it gets while the NCAA continues to look the other way.  And kudos to Wright for doing this quietly after the season vs another high profile coach who made his retirement all about him and his ego.

It seems to me that a large part of the respect and success of the ‘new’ Big East is due to the consistent success of Villanova. I can only view this as bad for the conference.

I agree with this but Jay was going to inevitably retire.  The conference couldnt be in a better position for that day (Smart, Matta, Miller in the fold - UConn back - solid programs in Creighton and Providence).
