Shaka and Maya Smart make major gift to help students cover emergency expenses

FEBRUARY 7, 2022

Culture of Inclusion
Shaka Smart, head coach of the Marquette University men's basketball program, and his wife, Maya, have made a major gift to help Black students at Marquette cover emergency expenses. The gift, which President Michael R. Lovell called "a true blessing," will help support students who experience unanticipated loss or travel emergencies as well as food and safety needs. The fund will mirror the university's Bridge to the Future Fund, which has provided immediate support to hundreds of students experiencing financial strain.

Awesome to see. Impact hire on all facets.

So today I learned only Black students at MU incur unanticipated loss or travel emergencies as well as food and safety need.

Agree. Personally love this--in line with the mission of the University and tribute to Bo Ellis, no less. Shaka is a dude who does what he says on a daily basis.

I'm just glad to know our Asian, Hispanic/Latino, Middle Eastern, Native American, and certain International students don't suffer financial hardship. MU is obviously doing something right.

No one claimed these things.  (Of course you know this and just wanted to sh*t on a nice thing.)

They are creating an endowment in honor of Bo & Candy Ellis to fund this.  Which is cool.  And the way these things work is that they already have a pool of money for student emergencies like these.  Every school does.  But now the endowment will be specifically used to support Black students, opening up funding for everyone else.

At least we know the 13 Native American students aren't suffering financial hardship since all they seem to be worried about is being offended by the school seal.

Agree Chick,  this can only be considered a positive.  Any other slant is pathetic.  People here can be real idiots.

For the record, I love that Shaka is doing this.  Character revealed, once again.  I just couldn't pass up the sarcastic reply to billyhoyle above, but I don't want anyone to take my teal comment seriously.
