That's definitely a thing I read into it. Hope we're both reading it correctly!

And of course really decent people

Great that Shaka and Maya are doing this…. No one has too and they did it.   This frees up other funds for other students in need  as well.  The pie has gotten bigger, so all benefit.

Hats off to Shaka and Maya!

It's the Smart's money.  I certainly can't say its not for a good cause.  If you see other needs, fill the void.

I agree the Smarts can donate to any cause they want and it is a good cause as I am sure there are poor blacks that need the help, but if a donor gave to help only poor white kids I even wonder if the Administration would accept a gift with that condition.

Right there in the original post, William.

"The fund will mirror the university’s Bridge to the Future Fund, which has provided immediate support to hundreds of students experiencing financial strain."

Does the university’s Bridge to the Future Fund include all students?

Socialist!

? Charity isn’t big with the socialists - they think that’s the job of government.

Back on point, major kudos to Maya and Shaka for their generosity and thoughtfulness - MU made a great choice in more ways than one!

It's like no one can ever do anything nice without someone else sh!tting on it.

Great job, Scoop.

Thanks Chick.

We target groups of students every day. The gift my wife and I give goes to students in the College of Communications. Others give for important causes within the university, whatever they might be.

Look, God knows there needs to be more "emergency funds." Mr. and Mrs. Smart did that.

If you don't like it, PONY UP! I'm sure Marquette would be happy to have your contribution!

Thanks, Coach. Thanks Mrs. Smart. Somebody out there will be glad you're there!!!!

That's the kind of move you make if you're thinking forever home.

It's amazing and generous.  However, I believe the Smart's believe in "investing" in every community in which they've lived.

“We granted more than $100,000 to 41 public libraries across 36 Texas counties this year,” Maya Smart says. “Those dollars will be used to expand collections to better serve the needs and interests of local patrons, such as increasing the numbers of Spanish titles, books by multicultural authors and books with large print for visually impaired readers.”

The Smarts promised a dollar-for-dollar match for contributions made during the game against Belmont University on Dec. 16. Fans donated $6,208.89 in cash and $6,160 in checks at the game and an additional $7,110 online.

Also, the way I read it, black athletes would also be eligible, meaning Shaka can support his guys without breaking the rules, and gets a tax break to boot!

So today I learned only Black students at MU incur unanticipated loss or travel emergencies as well as food and safety need.
Pretty sure you don't learn anything on any day.

Fluffy stated the administration would not; which on the face of it sounds pretty racist to exclude help for students simply because of their skin color. I hope Fluffy is wrong unless he speaks for the administration.

I’m not wrong. No school is going to accept an emergency fund that only supports white students. Sorry you see it as racist.

Shaka and Maya Smart make major gift to help students cover emergency expenses

FEBRUARY 7, 2022

Culture of Inclusion
Shaka Smart, head coach of the Marquette University men’s basketball program, and his wife, Maya, have made a major gift to help Black students at Marquette cover emergency expenses. The gift, which President Michael R. Lovell called “a true blessing,” will help support students who experience unanticipated loss or travel emergencies as well as food and safety needs. The fund will mirror the university’s Bridge to the Future Fund, which has provided immediate support to hundreds of students experiencing financial strain.

Still waitin' on da Tommy and Joannie Crean Memorial Soccer Megaplex, hey?

Home run hire.  That's very generous of the Smart's.

P.S. - To those complaining about how the money gets allocated, get over it.  Pretty common for charitable donations to have some parameters on usage.

Already been happening for generations. As someone said, the pie is bigger, more people benefit. No one is losing a slice, more people are getting a taste.

Close, charity is still encouraged.  But charity shouldn't have to exist for people to live their lives.

When you accept a gift exclusively for one race and refuse the gift exclusively for the another race how can it not be racist. I'm sure state schools that do that would be in violation of civil rights laws. MU as a private school can do what it likes and I hope they would not refuse such a gift as some here already have said the pie only gets bigger and more people benefit.
