Great that Shaka and Maya are doing this…. No one has too and they did it.   This frees up other funds for other students in need  as well.  The pie has gotten bigger, so all benefit.

I agree the Smarts can donate to any cause they want and it is a good cause as I am sure there are poor blacks that need the help, but if a donor gave to help only poor white kids I even wonder if the Administration would accept a gift with that condition.

We target groups of students every day. The gift my wife and I give goes to students in the College of Communications. Others give for important causes within the university, whatever they might be.

Look, God knows there needs to be more "emergency funds." Mr. and Mrs. Smart did that.

Also, the way I read it, black athletes would also be eligible, meaning Shaka can support his guys without breaking the rules, and gets a tax break to boot!

Shaka Smart, head coach of the Marquette University men’s basketball program, and his wife, Maya, have made a major gift to help Black students at Marquette cover emergency expenses. The gift, which President Michael R. Lovell called “a true blessing,” will help support students who experience unanticipated loss or travel emergencies as well as food and safety needs. The fund will mirror the university’s Bridge to the Future Fund, which has provided immediate support to hundreds of students experiencing financial strain.

P.S. - To those complaining about how the money gets allocated, get over it.  Pretty common for charitable donations to have some parameters on usage.

When you accept a gift exclusively for one race and refuse the gift exclusively for the another race how can it not be racist. I'm sure state schools that do that would be in violation of civil rights laws. MU as a private school can do what it likes and I hope they would not refuse such a gift as some here already have said the pie only gets bigger and more people benefit.
