Casino if we’re counting that as a mob movie. That last scene where Pesci’s voice over cuts off as he gets beat was brutal, but an incredible scene.

Surprised by the love for The Departed--good movie that is nowhere near the level of the others.

1. Godfather
2. Goodfellas
3. Godfather 2

The Departed is one of my least favorite Scorsese movies.  I though the Irishaman was far superior

Maybe if the Irishman was half as long.  I was underwhelmed but I think that was largely related to how much it dragged on.  The casting was also a miss.  It’s not the 80s or 90s anymore.  Those guys were far too old to be believable

I don’t disagree with the last part.  It was definitely a last waltz feel to it.

I think what Scorsese was going for was using Deniro’s character as a rebuke to those who glorify the gangsters of his previous films.  He was sad and alone in the end with these far-fetched stories and a pathetic figure desperate for attention.  Dudes love Goodfellas and it’s a great film but I think the point is often missed.  Death amd prison are always around the corner and in the end, you stand alone, often without your family and friends

Road to Perdition

Hard no for me on RTP.  Some decent performances, especially Daniel Craig,  but way too contrived imo.  I thought it fizzled after showing decent potential early in the film.

Like The Usual Suspects, I'd call this a crime movie, but not a mob movie.

Mob movies - or just movies with mob-centric plots?

On the Waterfront
The Sting
Some Like it Hot

Would The Usual Suspects be considered a mob flick?  I'll defer to the experts.

Crime or heist movie, not a mob flick. If it were, it would be my #1, but it's not.

For me it's Goodfellas. I really liked the Godfather movies when I was young, but the pacing is just too slow for me now. That's more an indictment of the era they were made. There's just not much from the 1970s I have the patience for anymore.

I completely disagree.  There's not a scene in G1 that isn't outstanding.  The length of a film has nothing to do with its pacing.  I think you are disrespecting Clemenza and to a degree Vito Corleone.  :)

Shouts on the call for Boyz in the Hood, the term “mob” can evolve, and this certainly a great one.

Not to knock your opinion, which is totally fine, but many in the critic/cinephile world consider the 70s the Golden Age of American film.

I know. I just can't get there. Maybe it's because I'm not as patient as I once was, but I think the medium has been significantly improved on since then. Not just technologically but also from a storytelling perspective. It amazes me when I watch many movies from that time at how dull they are. They just don't hold my attention. I guess welcome to the 20s for me.

Technologically things have gotten better but stories haven't.  There are very few great films nowadays and not a lot of creativity.  The best stuff is on TV.

I agree with this.  Movie storytelling is pretty poor nowadays.  The visuals are far superior but sometimes less green screen and more cinematography goes a long way

At least back then, 90 percent of the  movies weren't based on comic book characters.
Have some patience, FFS.

Speaking of, I'd add Road to Perdition and A History of Violence as recent mob movies that were good. Both Mortenson and Hanks gave an excellent alternative on what is typically an Italian genre.

Speaking of Viggo, Eastern Promises just missed my top 5.

So I just re-watched the Godfather on a flight this weekend.  Had been meaning to and this thread reminded me.

Obviously its an incredible story, there is incredible acting and performances, but for a legendary movie by a legendary director...when viewed currently, parts of it are HORRIBLE.  When Sonny beats up Carlo in the street, there are 2-3 different punches that are blatant whiffs, you can see blank space clear as day.

The classic Moe Greene shot?  The blood is awful and he gently lays his head down like he's taking a nap.

There are a bunch of other weird quirky sound things and almost every gunshot/reaction is terrible.

Its still an enjoyable movie, the story is timeless and gripping, but there are at least 5 "crime" movies made a year that are better and more enjoyable to watch from a cinematography, effects, and polish standpoint.

I also watched The Godfather again fairly recently -- first time in decades -- and I agree.

But of course, the same can be said of lots and lots of movies from years gone by. I mean, the special effects in Star Wars suck when using what we see in any decent sci-fi flick now. The big fight in Rocky? Ugh. Etc, etc, etc.

I do know what you're saying, though. For a movie considered one of the greatest films ever made, the "action" leaves a lot to be desired.

I recently watched Wizard of Oz with my niece and nephew. Talk about your lame special effects....

One of my favorite social media gags was sharing a picture of an item in my wife's nail care basket. I pointed out how the "Polish remover" was a clear attempt to get rid of me.  ;D
