My 10 year old grand daughter likes going to the theatre, but I do wonder if  their time has come.

After COVID - definitely.
I love going to the movie theater.

My local theater has been offering "rent your own" theater" for a screening deal.  You pay a flat fee and are allowed up to x number of guests for your private screening.  Not that there is a lot of movie choices to choose from at the moment..............

That's a cool concept. Doesn't quite solve the air flow issue unless it's being recycled from outside. Do they play whatever you request or only current showings?

I haven't been to a theater in ages. Big screen TV, solid sound system, ability to pause anytime I want. While I understand some people love them, I just don't see the attraction.

I'm pretty sure just current showings which have included classics lately.

I will. There's just nothing to me that replicates the theater experience for me when it comes to movies.

There are people who never really liked theaters, would prefer to be watching at home, etc... This is probably the death knell for people like that going to theaters as they improve/evolve VOD releases.  But people who enjoy it, use it as dates/family outings, see multiple movies a year...their behavior likely won't change. I really like movies but I'm not hardcore "need to see it as soon as it's released", so I don't go a ton.  But the at home experience, regardless of your TV/stereo system doesn't compare with the theater for a great action movie or cinematic marvel. Your amazing 60in TV still pales in comparison.

I will continue to go to movie theatres but do think they will go the way of Blockbuster in the nearish future.

Havent been to a movie theater since 2001.

Take off the PeeWee Herman raincoat and they might let you in.

Back when we used to have 21" TV's and no streaming, we went to the theater a lot.

65" TV and able to schedule when you want + not spending $15 on stale popcorn and a coke makes me wonder why anyone would want to go to a theater.

We rented one for tonight to watch Christmas Vacation (it's my wife's birthday or I'd NEVER do this on game night) and it was only $100. AMC is offering some new releases for $200. Shockingly cheap IMO - I don't think I'd feel comfortable with the 20 person max but the four naginiF's and another family for sure.

Assuming their hygiene procedures are as advertised I can easily see going a few times over winter break. If it doesn't seem up to our cleanliness standards (and we're on the paranoid side) we'll leave pre show and watch the movie at home tonight.

Wow - that is cheap.

Wasn't a regular ticket in the pre-Covid days about $15 per person?

Out by me drive-ins are making a comeback - and it started pre-Covid:

Cool! I hope they still have the dancing hot dog commercials.

Near my old house in Illinois was one of the last single-screen drive-ins in the country.  It closed down two years ago because the owner of the land it was on didn't renew their lease.  The owner of the drive in sold everything - projector, car speakers, snack bar equipment, etc.

I guess whatever plans the owner of the land had fell through, because he invited the drive-in guy to come back.   He basically has to start from scratch, though - all that is left is the screen and the empty snack bar.

And oh, yes, they still had the dancing hot dog commercials - and my kids snickered at hot dog jumping into the bun at a surprisingly young age.   :-\

Can't beat movie theater butter for the popcorn. So yes I'll go back.

It really is disconcerting when you find out that they know...and you think they're still too young.

For us it was when our daughter was flipping through channels and stopped at Sex And the City. We told her to change the channel when she made it clear she knew exactly what they were talking about.  :-\

Once middle school hits you have to assume they know right? I mean I'm not a parent yet but that'd be my mindset.

Prior to that it's hit or miss based on if their friends have older siblings.

When I was about thirteen, I watching SNL with my parents back when Chevy Chase did Weekend Update.  One of the stories he read was that Renee Richards had written a memoir - Playing Tennis without Balls.  I cracked up and I got my mother's famous Look of Death.

You young people can Google "Renee Richards" to find out why that joke was funny.

Yes, absolutely.  I can't wait to go anywhere and be social.  We caught $5 movies with free popcorn every other week or so depending on what was released.

We have a full theater setup in the basement and full bar... but there is something about being at the theater that makes it more fun for me.

I believe Chevy appeared in only 3-4 episodes of the second season before bolting ... kind of like a college athlete leaving in the middle of his or her sophomore season.

He was replaced by Bill Murray, who was a genius in his own way. The two did not like each other for quite some time IIRC.

Oh, and yes, I absolutely would go to the movies again if it became safe to do so.

I'd go to a movie at the movies after the pandemic, sure.

The biggest reason why I have seen less movies at the movies in recent years, is the selection of movies to see at the movies has been of less interest to me.

I still go every so often (pre pandemic) if there is something I want to see, or, if I am taking some kids to see something that interests them. But that has certainly been less and less. It doesn't have as much to do with home set up as it does at the movies selection available.
