How many years will Dawson play at MU?
« on: November 28, 2020, 09:44:27 AM »
Of course, he's like the new girl at school and it's easy to get a crush on him. Worried that he's
too good, which means there will be teams that will pay him to play. Looking for thoughts re: his talent level, physical status, suitability for the pro game, etc. Or someone please tell me that his family feels that a degree is the most important thing - please.

Obviously Wojo needs to stop trying to recruit guys that are NBA material.  It's bad for the team.
Have some patience, FFS.

I think two. This next draft will be loaded with NBA ready talent & I can see Garcia going the JRE route.

I agree. And it lets him add some bulk.

Two seasons at Marquette.  It allows him time in the weight room.  The NBA draft will be crowded in 2021.  Two seasons on the college level and he's a lottery pick in 2022.

Obviously we haven't even played a high major yet. But based off what I have seen of his game make up. I think he should stay two years(he can stay 3 or 4 if he wants haha).

If him and DJ are both here next year. Man it is going to be a fun ball club.

Plus the potential that someone like Theo may even come back for another.

Down gang.

It's too early to tell. Let's see what happens when we play the Red Roadkill or get into the Big East season.

Mr. Dawson has a lot of upside, but the quickest way to kill it is to place these kinds of expectation on him. Enjoy college, kick some Badger ass and let the game come to you.

Remember Henry Ellenson. He was one-and-done and the sad thing is, he's done!

Factors to consider

1. Dawson is 6-11  and Long
2. Dawson is highly coordinated
3. Dawson can run the floor well
Those three  alone will get him to the second round. Then add in these additional elements :
4. Dawson has good hands
5. Dawson can shoot well from long distance .
6.  Dawson can dribble well including tight to the floor.
7. Dawson has court vision and pass well.
So it becomes a question of how high in the first round Dawson goes.

The 2021 draft may be loaded, and 2022 may better ,  but that generally won’t deter a player from leaving if they feel they are a first rounder.

So enjoy Dawson while he is here . Hopefully we can sign Mac Etienne or Jonas Aidoo.

The announcer made a Chris Bosh comparison last night, boy that would sure be nice.

It's a legit comparison, and it wasn't the first time I've heard it.

That doesn't mean people are saying Dawson Garcia is as good as the borderline Hall of Famer that Chris Bosh turned out to be, or even as good as Bosh was at Georgia Tech. It just means they think Garcia's build and game are similar to Bosh's -- he's tall and thin, he can score from inside and outside, he can pass, he can rebound. It's as good a comparison as any.

FWIW, during his one and only season at Georgia Tech, Bosh averaged 15.4 ppg, 9.2 rpg, 1.2 apg and shot 56%. He shot 48% from 3, but only took 1.5 attempts per game so that doesn't mean very much.

If Garcia ends up being so proficient that the pros see him as a first-round draft pick after this season, I think we will have had a heck of a season.

Saw a mock draft for next year, Carton out, Dawson 51st, pretty fluid. No way does he go if he is that low.

Dawson will be top 20 on size, skill and  potential. It will be up to him but I see him as one and done.

This maybe true, but right now I do not think he has an NBA career much different than Ellenson's.

I think his game is way more complete than Ellenson’s. Yeah it’s only been two games but he is really skilled.

Garcia has better guards.   Henry would get the rebound, bring it up, and may e initiate the offense.

Personally, I think Garcia is better than Henry.

If he wants to go pro after this season, I think he has the opportunity. Hoping we can keep him for 2 years.

As great as Henry was let's not forget he was drafted on his potential. I remember one analyst saying 'you can see his shooting form is perfect so while the numbers aren't there it's only a matter of time till that three starts falling' and they never did... I've said it before I hope he's somewhere between Henry and Joey if he's more Joey two years if he's more Henry I hope for his sake he tests the waters at least.

Also remember the threads about whether Haanif would leave early? Let's put a pin in this.

We know how the story has played out with Henry. He was drafted on potential, while he has improved significantly, everything is relative. So now he is the mode of battling to make rosters after 4 years.

It is well noted by many coaches that Henrys defense is what is holding him back from the NBA, that is of course, relative to his current offensive level. Henry needs to be at the Kyle Korver, Doug McDermott offensive  level to solidify a second string position in the NBA , that relative  offensive level  would offset his current defensive level enough to warrant a roster spot.

The role of second string in a sport like basketball is to hold the game close until the first string comes back. So one can be an NBA second stringer by either being very good at offense or very good at defense. Middle of the road doesn't cut it.

It is not too late for Henry to achieve the requisite level of offensive capability to make a roster , he is still relatively young , has been trending up offensively, and has another opportunity to prove himself with the Raptors.

Hank basically did what Dawson did against Arkansas Pine Bluff and Eastern Illinois for an entire season. If Dawson continues to produce like this when he’s playing against teams that can match his size and muscle up on him, I’ll be incredibly impressed and pleasantly surprised.

Hank was a significantly better rebounder. Dawson seems to be a significantly better shooter. Hank seemed stronger both around the rim and handling the basketball.

Henry's problem in the NBA is only part defensive. If he could be a stretch 4 who could make NBA 3s at 40%, his defense wouldn't even be mentioned.

If Garcia continues to be an efficient offensive player who can show he can hit 3s at a high percentage, he will be VERY attractive to NBA teams.

Actually, Haanif did leave early - twice.
