The monoclonal antibodies are being used under something called 'expanded access' or 'compassionate use,' a provision in the FDA regulations for patients who have "an immediately life-threatening condition or serious disease or condition to gain access to an investigational medical product (drug, biologic, or medical device) for treatment outside of clinical trials when no comparable or satisfactory alternative therapy options are available." When I have seen this provision used in the past, it was for people like end-stage cancer patients who had failed other treatment regimens and are literally on death's door. In other words, a desperate Hail Mary pass.

Given that other therapeutic combinations (particularly vitamin C, zinc and dexamethasone) have shown great promise, the expanded access use of the antibodies tells me that he is more ill than they are letting on.

I don't think he is necessarily more ill than they are letting on. These monoclonal antibodies were the treatment that I though would come online first.

I think this is a case where it's the president, has a good safety profile, and he is 74. A 74 year old that may have had a stroke earlier this year. He likely had a high viral titer with no antibodies yet. He is the poster child of someone at great risk.

This was likely precautionary, so that he doesn't turn south...because if he does, I don't think he makes it.

Still, given the high success rates that have been reported recently with other regimens, I think it is very possible that he is gravely ill. The fact that we have not yet heard from the physicians treating him also raises concerns.

I totally understand that, and agree.

Just putting some background facts out there for context. And again, it is not as though there are no other effective therapies available.

If he really is doing well, it would be good to hear it from his treating physicians. We knew far more about Reagan within a couple of hours of him being shot.

Guess we will see.
