New Orleans Pelicans and Philadelphia 76ers have already reached out to former Clippers head coach Doc Rivers in regards to their head coach openings, sources told @TheUndefeated.

Doc would do well in Philly, but not sure he would want to deal with the potential drama there. I'd be surprised if he'd be interested in a not-ready-for-prime-time team like New Orleans, but maybe.

If Marquette as much as gives him a courtesy call Wojo may quit in a huff, our entire team may transfer and our recruits will surely decommit.

If we risk offending him we'll never recover. After all, common sense tells us our third best coach (out of three) over the last 20 years is irreplaceable.

Yeah, I don't like the former NBA guys for that reason.  Love Doc, but college hoops coaching is probably not for him.

Honest question, how many coaches are there that got their first head coaching job at the NBA level and then became a college coach? Any successful ones? I can think of a few college coaches who went to the NBA, failed, and then came back (Calipari, Pitino, Hoiberg). But off the top of my head I can't think of any that started in the pros and then went to college.

Thanks for the responses, I knew there was some.

Looking at this list, besides Larry Brown going the Nuggets to UCLA in 1979, all these coaches took multiple years off after being fired from a losing NBA team (IIRC Dunleavy technically stepped down) before taking a college position. The jury is still out on Mussleman, but the other five failed pretty spectacularly at the college level. I guess you could say Larry Brown was successful at SMU if you don't mind postseason bans and lost scholarships.

So, Doc doesn't match the profile of other coaches who went from the NBA to college...and even if he did, it's likely he takes some time off from coaching before making that move.
