The Sinner story is extremely disappointing.

MuggsyB

Gauff should get through this match but something is just off.  She may need a complete reset and get rid of Gilbert?

For those who are more educated on Tennis, what is Nakashima's ceiling? When I watch him he seems to be a battler, hits some really good shots. He's back in the top 50 and playing well. Still only 23 but doesn't seem that physically imposing.

But I like his style more than a guy like Fritz even though Fritz is clearly the better player. I guess I'm asking do you think he can make a run into the top 15-20 like Paul, Shelton, Tiafoe and Fritz? The more Americans that can solidify themself in that range the better chance of one breaking through to get that elusive grand slam.

My guess would be no.

He is good enough, though, to make a run at the Semi's in a major.

MuggsyB

Very disappointing result from Korda.  From what I've seen of the American men I would say Tommy Paul and Ben Shelton are the most likely to win a GS.

MuggsyB

Absolutely fking ridiculous that Tiafoe/Shelton isn't a night match tomorrow.  They could have put them on Armstrong.  It's the USOpen and they're playing at 12:30 Eastern?  Totally inexcusable.

How many stupid takes do you have? Seems they never end.

Alcaraz with a brutal 1st set.  He needs to find his game quickly.

Feels like this was maybe based on ticket sales pre tournament? Either that or they want to keep giving Novak the night session

It doesn't make any sense to me at all.  It seems to be only based on seeding.  They have Sabalenka going on Ashe after the Djokovic match.  Meanwhile, Coco/Svitolina is another marquee 3rd rd match and they're playing in the morning.

I would guess its because ESPN has a football game this evening.

It's on ESPN 2.   I can't see Oklahoma/Temple having much of an impact.

I'm about 95% sure that more people will watch football than would watch tennis. They are maximizing viewership by putting the American matches on during the day, knowing that the hard-cores will watch ESPN2 this evening while a larger audience is watching football.

Hard to believe that Muggsy is outraged by this.

Yeah Muggsy and Sultan are both right. This is the best match of the day and it'd be great if it were a night match, but a day match is probably the right call for television purposes

MuggsyB

Sounds like the match isn't compelling at all and would have sucked for the night session.  Smh.

May not be the best match of the Open, but Shelton vs. Tiafoe should be the most fun.

I correct myself. It MAY be the best match. Maybe my 2 favorite players on the tour so it was a really fun match.

Herman Cain

Shelton Tiafoe was a great match.

Back in the day I used to attend the US Open. There have always been some great matches in the day in the earlier rounds. Corporate Sponsorship is important and they need some decent matches during the day. They used to have some outstanding matches on the old Grandstand next to the Old Louis Armstrong during the day.

Was great  to see Wozniacki make it into the 3rd round.

Wow.  The Djoker is on the ropes.  This is the best chance for an American to win a men's grand slam in 20+ years.

Not a huge surprise that Alvarez and Joker lost early.

The Olympics messed with the normal Majors schedule.

Good observation.

Alcaraz' loss was definitely surprising, Djokovic not as much.  Going from clay, to grass, back to clay, and then to a fast hard court is dfficult for everyone.  It's time for an American in the men's side to win this thing.

First time in 22 years that one of the big 3 didn't win a Grand Slam title.

Good observation.

I was listening to a podcast alast week with a former pro coach who said flat out that neither guy would win the Open. He talked about how top players' schedules every year were geared towards ramping up for the four majors and how the Olympics screwed up that routine.
