Heavyweight rumble
« on: February 09, 2019, 03:33:20 PM »
1.   Markus.    His hero ball kept Marquette in the game in the first half.    Picked clean when it mattered.   Where was the screen?  Surprised about the amount of NBA speculation by the announcers.
2.   Sacar.   Nice scoring with nobody else stepping up.
3.   I stand by my comments about Joey after the last game.   Freshman wall.    Looks slow, lost, and tired.
4.  Theo.   A force of nature, only when he can stay on the floor.
5.   Villanova is pure class.     What an amazing culture.    Kept getting off the mat. (cliché Philly reference)   Like Rocky.    Paschall and Booth have won national championships.   It shows.    Booth knows when it is his time.
6.  I really liked the effort at the start of the second half to get shots for everybody else.
7.  Sam really worked on Paschall defensively.   P is going to score, but Sam made him work for every one.
8.  MU shot an insane percentage from 2 in the second half, offset by Villanova making it rain from 3.
9.  Defense wins championships.
10.   Nice bounce back.    Nice show for the nation.  20-4   Next.

Nova is TOUGH. Not nearly as talented as the last 3 years beyond their top 2, but know exactly who they are and don’t beat themselves. Some of the defense we played on possessions they made a shot on was fantastic.

Onto DePaul. No letdowns.

Survival.

Huge win.

And I won money.

Had Nova -2 for my usual win/win.

Gotta quick turnaround Tuesday night in Chicago. MU has given themselves a chance to still win the regular season title.

Mad respect for Nova, not close to as talented as last few years, but that’s an A+ coach/program.

`Nova is a great team and program but the best team won today period. Our bench stepped up, Marcus was Marcus and Sacar was the difference. I am not concerned about the Hausers. They will be there.

Great halftime adjustments by Wojo to get others involved early.
Hated the Markus iso at the end.   Run the damned offense.
Shouldn’t have been this close.
Nova is class.

I thought it was an odd call.   MU has run next to zero flattened 1-4 sets this season.     Almost always, there is a high screen.     MU had the match up it wanted but the defender made a nice strip.

1)  Nova may be the best team we played this year.
2)  I suspect we'd have a very different game if we had played either Kansas or Indiana now.
3)  That last defensive stand looked like our Warriors of old.

Wonderful win. We're only as good as how we play Tuesday.

That’s two games in a row we’ve relied on that. Our offense is WAY too good to have that as our first option in critical situations. Wojo has work to do there.

But this was a huge win for this program. I never doubted a win until the last possession and then I was at worst unsure. We deserved to win. Love this team

You are correct

Nose bleed from actually winning for once.

I chose not to bet Seton Hall had to much confidence. We covered every other win.

They may not be as talented, but none of those teams started out 10-0 in Beast. Conference is a few steps down from past few years.

Box score.   Markus and Sacar combine for 56.     The entire rest of the team, 10.

Agree on all. There were a couple plays down the stretch that left something to be desired - but the worst by far was the play coming out of the timeout with a minute to go. Coming out of a timeout, with a bunch of time on the shot clock, Sam receives the ball deep on the wing, and everyone else stands and watches. Without having rewatched, I assume Nova denied the first option there, but there has to be offball movement and second and third options.

Agreed times a gajillion. Especially Paschall. He took insanely tough shots repeatedly against perfect defense and made them. He looked like the guy people said preseason was an AA candidate.

Had a chance to watch jay wright up close..

Not sure class is a term I would use ....

Swearing at players
Working the refs more than coaching
Mocking sacar as he made shots
Never thought Villanova was on the right side of a call

Great program
Organized
Demanding

Not much different than any successful coach

Whew.

Agree Wojo needs to rethink his end of game O.
The D at the end was good. When Booth went to pass, someone (Sam?) got just a slight deflection. Need the Stevens Point boys to get back from their break (although I agree with a poster above that Sam's D was laudable).

Hoping that the hold will reinforce their desire to play tough D.

Yup. Top/middle isn’t as good, but bottom is much, much better.

Now 7-1 in games decided by 2 possessions or less.  I'm starting to feel real bad for Theo, kid just wants to play ball, but some zebras won't let him.

Alot of those fouls were warranted. At least arguably. Tired of people acting like marquette never commits a foul. Sure there are some games where it was bad like at xavier but today no. Come on..
